Royal Ascot 12.40 Silver Wokingham Handicap (6f)

Like the main version of this race it’s one of the toughest handicaps of the week so we’re going to narrow it down with horses nearer the stand side as that seems to have an advantage. Our first pick has a great draw in 21, NAHAARR drops back in trip where he has good form in novice company ahead of Biometric who is rated in the 100s now. William Haggas has had a few go close this week and his horses look to be coming to form so the selection should be ready to go after his comeback run.

APLOMB doesn’t have quite as good a draw but with Hyperfocus leading the group he should get a good position in behind and come home late in conditions which he’s proven to like and has ran very well at Ascot previously. I would really like Swindler but the draw in 2 puts me off so he’s passed over on this occasion. He’s better than he showed last time though.

I can’t wait to see ADMIRAL NELSON again. He looked a monster winning on debut and I tweeted saying he was the most impressive 2yo I’ve seen this season so he has to be my selection in this race. It has strength in depth so I’m not expecting it to be easy. That’s reflected in his price to some extent. He did everything you want to see in a racehorse on debut though and with improvement to come (given the price he went off on debut) he should be extremely hard to beat. The yard took this last year with Arizona and look to have an equally as exciting prospect. He also has a high draw which should prove beneficial.

Qaader really impressed me at Newbury so he is the clear main danger. I can see the pair battling this one out from a fair way out as I think they’re comfortably better than the rest of the field. The latter is definitely smart so has to be feared but if the selection is as good as I’m hoping he will prove too strong.

Royal Ascot 2.25 Coronation Stakes (Group 1)

I couldn’t help but be a little underwhelmed by Quadrilateral’s effort in the Guineas. She can step forward with that under her belt and she should go close but at 11/4 you have to be confident she has the best credentials in the race and I’m not so my gut feeling is to take her on. This looks competitive but ALPINE STAR has to go close. She is a half-sister to the beast that was Alpha Centauri and showed progressive form as a 2yo. She could have tons more to come and a stop-start gallop won’t inconvenience her unlike the favourite.

If the principals do blow out then it brings into the reckoning Run Wild and Cloak Of Spirits. The latter is particularly interesting as she finished second to Love in the Guineas (a place ahead of Quadrilateral) and can also build on that.

Royal Ascot 3.00 St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) (1m)

Everyone knows how much we loved Pinatubo as a 2yo but it’s hard to make a case for him to reverse the form with WICHITA over a mile. Our pick seemed to outstay last seasons Champion 2yo in the Guineas. They will both come on but surely Pinatubo would have been close to peak fitness at Newmarket.

The selection has form on all ground types so won’t mind a bit of dig and the way he stayed on at Newmarket should suit Ascot which always takes a bit of getting when the ground isn’t rapid. Palace Pier skipped the Guineas and could easily be in there challenging if coming on for that impressive win at Newcastle.

Wichita 5/2 NEXT BEST

Royal Ascot 3.35 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) (6f)

The story behind Sceptical is brilliant and I wish connections all the best here but the bookies have taken no chances at 3/1 and at that price he has to be opposed. He was impressive the last day but that was just a Listed race so he has a fair bit to step up to prove himself in Group company. He was very impressive on the eye but this is a different test.

It’s a tricky race to dissect but ONE MASTER is the most solid and makes appeal at 5/1. She proved better than ever in the Prix de la Foret in France before running a big race in defeat in the Champions Sprint Stakes here in October. She was denied a run a couple of times so even had excuses there. The yard will have her ready and she can take full advantage of a weak renewal. Khaadem is feared most with the red-hot Jim Crowley in the saddle.

Royal Ascot 4.10 Wokingham Stakes (6f)

Wide open like the Silver Wokingham earlier in the day and yet again we’re looking at higher draws. Hat-trick seeking HIGHLAND DRESS is well placed to run a big race. The win at Newmarket on Guineas weekend was impressive and the extra 6lb shouldn’t be enough to stop him going close for the in-form Archie Watson.

TINTO who also won on that day in a slightly better race at Newmarket isn’t drawn as well but has a win in an Ascot handicap last season and could run a big race at a decent price. Others to note include Bielsa who has looked thoroughly progressive and at a bigger price Gulliver who has Ryan Moore booked.

Royal Ascot 4.40 Queen Alexandra Stakes (2m51/2f)

It’s the final race of Royal Ascot and our best bet of the day runs here in WHO DARES WINS. Trainer Alan King sprung a 33/1 upset in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes yesterday with Hollie Doyle finding the gaps late to win narrowly. Partner Tom Marquand will be hoping for a similar story here with the likeable 8yo. He won the 2019 Northumberland Plate at Newcastle back in June last year and will be suited by this sort of test. He stays strongly and is versatile regarding the ground. He developed into a smart chaser over the winter but still has scope on the Flat and should go very close.

I think the betting pretty much has the spot on as The Grand Visir is the main danger. He won the Ascot Stakes stylishly at this meeting last year and while he has been well held since he is a big player back under these conditions in a race that will suit him well. The other horse to consider is Nate The Great. He was well backed on return before finishing third but this longer trip is much more his bag and he can run well.
