Newmarket 1.50 The bet365 Mile Handicap Stakes

Cracking race to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday and FINEST SOUND should take the world of beating here for Simon and Ed Crisford. This progressive son of Exceed And Excel ran out an impressive winner at Haydock off a mark of 82 back from 247 days off the track and again improved to chase home Khaloosy in the Britannia at Royal Ascot last time. The pair pulled four lengths clear from the rest with the field well strung out in behind so there’s no reason to doubt that form. He is up another 7lb but still looks a step ahead of the handicapper to me and should have no problem taking this out.

Establish caught the eye when third at Kempton in October and continued his progression to get off the mark at Bath last time. Going the right way and looks a danger but will need more again to even trouble the favourite. Eastern World is also worth noting after winning what looks a good maiden at Newmarket. Again needs plenty more here though.

Ascot 2.05 The Woodford Reserve Handicap Stakes

William Haggas bids to win this race for the third time in a row and he has a decent chance with Manaabit who was last seen winning at Beverley. That said I am going to take a chance with one at a bigger price in EARTH AND SKY. She has been seen at her best on the all weather but hasn’t actually raced on turf for a while so may have just improved as a horse. Her times on the AW would put her right in this race and I am happy to take a chance on her at double figure odds.

Others to note would be Melnikova who could be thrown in on previous form but would like to have seen her run this year going against experienced handicappers. The main danger for me would be Declared Interest who set a decent time at Chelmsford before running well in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot.

Newmarket 2.25 The British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

A tricky race to work out. Spring Of Love made a winning debut in October last year but ran no sort of race on return, way too free and weakening badly to finish second last. She needs to bounce back and has too much to prove for me to make her a selection. INDIE ANGEL however is gradually getting the hang of things and ran a big race when denied just a nose at Doncaster last time. A mark of 78 is obviously well within reach and is she backs that up then she could easily go one better.

Fantail will probably attract support as that wasn’t a bad effort when fourth to Chelmsford and she looks to be improving but the form has had a couple of knocks since so I think she needs to improve a fair bit to get on terms with the selection. Not for me. Odyssey Girl I’d put forward as the danger. She isn’t very flashy but rarely runs a bad race and comes out quite well on the figures so should run into a place at least.

Ascot 2.40 The Betfred Heritage Handicap Stakes

Interesting race with a few horses that could improve markedly as the season goes on. Based on previous runs CELESTRAN looks a solid option after his run last time out was franked by Khalifa Sat who finished second in the Derby at Epsom. That Listed race makes his handicap mark of 88 look very appealing especially getting 8lb from Dubai Souq who was very good when last seen but hasn’t had a run this year.

Eastern Sheriff is a non runner now so perhaps Carlos Felix will step forward as the main danger if he steps forward from that return fourth at Doncaster.

Newmarket 3.00 The bet365 Superlative Stakes (Group 2)

Richard Hannon took this last year with Mystery Power. He looks to have a bit to do if he is to follow up though as while Ventura Tormenta won well at Yarmouth last week he probably has a bit to find to take the prize here. I still think he might run well at a price though.

The one I like is HUDSON RIVER for Aidan O’Brien. The stable are seeking a fourth win in this race and this son of Galileo looked a highly promising sort when making a winning debut at the Curragh over this trip last month. He set out in front and did it the hard way still looking a bit rough round the edges before asserting. It didn’t look a bad maiden and I think he is open to considerable improvement off the back of it. Moore might be positive on him here and if he does push forward and put his big galloping action to good use I’m not sure they will be reeled in. Obviously Seventh Kingdom could be a very promising colt by Frankel. He also made a winning start with the penny dropping late on. He can improve and looks the biggest danger to the selection with David Egan in the saddle. Gosden’s other horse King Zain is also respected with Frankie Dettori on board. Looks a race that should work out well with an eye to the future.

Ascot 3.15 The Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2)

This looks a wide open renewal with plenty with questions to answer. Starting at the top of the market Mohaather is the clear favourite and has plenty of potential. His run at Royal Ascot has to be marked up as he hit trouble in running. That said I would rather take a bigger price on a horse with better form in the book and that is SKARDU.

He ran in the same race at Ascot but was so far back it was hard for him to get into it. He is likely to come on a bundle for the run and should give trainer William Haggas a great chance of making it 3 wins of this race in the last 6 years. Zaaki ran a cracker in this last year in a race that read well on the clock. He hasn’t run to that level since but if finding form he will be thereabouts.

Newmarket 3.35 The Darley July Cup Stakes (Group 1)

This looks all about Lethal Force colt GOLDEN HORDE for Clive Cox and Adam Kirby. He took it up with nearly two furlongs to go in the Commonwealth Cup and ran out a convincing winner at the line. He doesn’t look done improving yet and while I appreciate this is competitive I think he has a leading chance of coming away with the prize. He was visually impressive the last day and that was backed up by the clock. He looks an uncomplicated sort who relishes this trip as he has the speed to go where his rider wants him and the stamina to see it out.

Sceptical ran huge when third in the Diamond Jubilee and is a big player again but the selection clocked a much better time in the Commonwealth Cup than the winner Hello Youmzain so he needs to better that to overhaul the favourite and I’m not sure he can. At a bigger price Threat is likely to show up well for a long way. He is back in trip after finishing fifth of seven behind Palace Pier. Double-figure price so may be worth a saver as I can’t have him out the frame. Same way I think the favourite just wins.

Newmarket 3.35

Golden Horde 9/4 NAP

Ascot 3.50 The Fresh Air Helicopters Handicap Stakes

It doesn’t get much tougher than a sprint handicap at Ascot but we quite like JONAH JONES after his comeback run at Haydock. He came home really well late on and will be much fitter for the run. 5 furlongs looks his trip and he looks to have a fair bit to come.

SAVALAS impressed on the all weather last time out and rates the main danger for me if transferring that level of performance onto turf. He is a huge price so might be worth covering each way as well at around 20/1. Other horses who should be on the premises include Stone Of Destiny back at his optimum trip and at a bigger price Mountain Peak who arrives off the back of a career best.

Newmarket 4.10 The bet365 Bunbury Cup (Heritage Handicap)

A typically competitive renewal of the Bunbury Cup and you’d expect nothing less! Mark Johnston and Frankie Dettori were victorious last year with Vale Of Kent and it wouldn’t surprise me if the market had it pretty much spot on again with MUTAMAASIK. He is vying for favouritism and I think there are good grounds to think he’ll reverse that form from Royal Ascot with main market rival here Motakhayyel. The latter had the better track position and looked primed for that day whereas I think the selection just looks open to greater improvement and can find a bit more if it comes down to a battle between the pair.

Dangers are obviously a plenty in a race of this nature and I can give good shouts to Sir Busker who swooped late to win the Silver Hunt Cup and Arigato who has looked a different proposition lately winning his last two. Needs more again under a 5lb rise though. At a monster price I wanted to chuck in CARDSHARP for last year’s winning trainer. He has the Doyler on top and is down a couple of pounds in the handicap. He hasn’t shown much the last twice but does have bits and pieces of very good form which would give him a squeak in a wide-open handicap like this. Around 28/1 at the time of writing and looks worth including.
