Goodwood 1.50 Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) 7f

Happy Romance has been a revelation for connections winning the Super Sprint at Newbury before following up in a valuable sales race at York last time. She has plenty going for her and looks sure to run a big race but the step up to 7f may just stretch her in this company and the equally exciting POMELO (best price 5/2) is preferred. This filly by Dubawi is bred to be a bit special and looked a bit of a monster forging clear to win on debut at Newbury last month. She is open to any amount of improvement and could even be a Guineas horse in the making. I think she’ll be well backed for this and I think she’ll win.

Isabella Giles won her first two starts before finishing fourth to Santosha in the Princess Margaret. She is certainly not ruled out as the step up to 7f should suit and being by Belardo if the ground does deteriorate she will have no issues. I think she’s the main danger to the selection.

Newmarket 2.05 Close Brothers Hopeful Stakes (Listed Race) 6f

Last years winner returns to try and retain his crown, however Raucous hasn’t been seen for 329 days and came into last years race in peak fitness so it would be a tough ask. This race is usually ran on rattling fast ground but it looks like it will be soft this year. SUMMERGHAND (best price 11/4) is not only in top form but he has one of the best time figures on soft ground as well. He was fitted with cheekpieces last time and they seem to have found even more improvement. If running to the level he did in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood he is surely the one to beat.

Last years winner is obviously a danger if fit enough but Brad The Brief might thrive in these conditions and outrun his odds/official rating with the 3 year old allowance and chase the selection home.

Goodwood 2.25 Brian Chattaway Celebrating 50 Years At Ladbrokes Handicap 7f

This is competitive and a few of these have solid claims but the one I’m siding with is BREATH OF AIR (best price 7/1) for Charlie Hills and Ryan Moore. This Bated Breath gelding was desperately unlucky at Haydock 3 weeks ago, missing by a nose at the line. He has gone up just 1lb for that and still looks well handicapped off a mark of 89 (4lb higher than his last winning mark). He ran at this track as a 3yo and was keeping on well when short of room. I think it will suit his style and he will be looking to pounce late under Ryan Moore. He has been well found in the market at around 7/1 but that’s with good reason and he is sure to be finishing better than most.

Magical Wish was back to winning ways at Doncaster last time and I rate the second Ghalyoon so that doesn’t look a bad bit of form. A 2lb rise is very fair and he may well emerge as the main danger to the selection. Others to note include Battered who didn’t shape badly over C&D last month and at a bigger price Milltown Star if he is fit on return from 284 days off the track.

Windsor 2.40 Gallagher Group August Stakes (Listed Race) 1m31/2f

A rematch of the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood for most of these. Desert Encounter came out on top that day finishing 2nd but I am siding with the 3rd LE DON DE VIE (best price 7/2). He didn’t get a clear run on the rail just as the race was developing and finished well to end up just a head behind Desert Encounter. He also has some of the best form on the forecast soft ground plus the scope for more improvement than the 8 year old.

Desert Encounter being a previous winner of this race will be the danger but is unlikely to get the pace he needs unless Communique goes off very fast.

Goodwood 3.00 Ladbrokes March Stakes (Group 3) 1m6f

Mark Johnston took this last year with Sir Ron Priestley and he has strong claims of defending his crown in the shape of SUBJECTIVIST (best price 15/8). This colt by Teofilo has been kept busy in his short career to date and looked a useful operator making all in a Listed race at Hamilton last month. He then chased home Mogul and Highland Chief here (English King and Khalifa Sat in behind) when third in the Gordon Stakes before not seen to best effect at York behind Pyledriver. This small-field scenario promises to suit and I think he has the ability to see off main market rival Cabaletta. The latter is a big danger having chased home Enbihaar over C&D last time so has to be feared.

Celtic Art ran well off top weight on belated return here last month and won’t mind the drop in trip. Certainly not ruled out but probably lacks the class of the front two. Table Mountain has improved since going up in trip so stepping back to 1m6f looks far from ideal for now.

Windsor 3.15 Gallagher Group Winter Hill Stakes (Group 3) 1m2f

A small field as always for this race but it does look very competitive even with just 6 runners. FOX CHAIRMAN (best price 11/8) has bumped into Aspetar twice this season and is due to get his head in-front. The form of those races have worked out well and back down to Group 3 level he should take all the beating. He has form on soft ground which will be required at Windsor on Saturday.

Sinjaari looked better than ever when beating Certain Lad who has won since and may have taken a big step forward making him the main danger if proving himself at this level.

Goodwood 3.35 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile Stakes (Group 2) 1m

I’ve spent much longer on this race than I had first planned but however I break it down the one I struggle to get away from is REGAL REALITY (best price 7/2) for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore. It feels like this horse has been around an age as I don’t think he has ever swerved a challenge so it was good to see him win the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury 3 weeks ago in the manner that he did. We know he is far from straightforward so the headgear looked to do the trick as he came there strongly to ease clear. I know the race somewhat fell apart but even still it was hard not to be impressed and I think he is going to go very close in a bid to follow up. We know he likes this track having won a Group 3 here as a 3yo and I can see it being run to suit with the likes of Benbatl and Century Dream pushing forward.

Benbatl is the biggest threat and is deservedly top rated. He has a penalty but will have no fears going well fresh as arguably his best performance came when winning a Group 2 at Newmarket back from 335 days off. He has been kept busy over the winter winning two from three starts in Dubai. The ground is potentially against him though as he certainly wouldn’t want it any worse than Good to Soft. Century Dream is quite the opposite so the weather could end up dictating this market. The favourite is tough to oppose off the back of that impressive win last time though and should take care of these if things drop right which by my judgement they should.
