Ascot 1.20 Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (Class 3) 2m3f

A bit of a trappy race to start the live action on ITV Racing but there are still some potentially smart chasers in here including TRINCOMALEE who looks a solid each-way bet. He was third on chase debut after being outpaced over 2 miles and will need every yard of this trip and should improve significantly for the extra yardage. He put in some good hurdling performances over this sort of trip and should outrun his price-tag.

Dr Sanderson improved a lot on his return but looking back through his form he has to prove himself to be consistent especially up 7lb now. The main danger could well be Dorking Boy who ran well behind Zoffee and should have more to come.

Wetherby 1.35 bet365 Handicap Chase (Challenger Middle Distance Chase Series Qualifier) (Class 3) 2m31/2f

Guy improved a chunk to win on chase debut at Huntingdon 18 days ago. He has to be feared off the back of that but the handicapper has had his say hiking him up 12lb and he may find this tougher. I think there’s value in opposing so I’ve taken a chance on MINELLA FOR ME for Tom George. This 10yo by King’s Theatre has won here before and ran a very good race when beaten less than a length on return at Warwick and is entitled to step forward from that. He looks a solid each way play in a tricky race.

The favourite is obviously a danger but Dandolo Du Gite is probably the one I fear most. He routed the opposition on debut over fences when last see at Southwell and if it wasn’t for the lengthy absence he’d be my selection. 17 months on the sidelines just tempers the enthusiasm a touch so the vote goes to the selection instead.

Not quite the level of last year’s renewal but CAPELAND has a decent chance to put right last years race as he was forced out at the last fence when looking like he would go close. He followed that up with a nice win and is usually ready to go early in the season. He will take some beating if running as well as last year and has to be my selection.

Amoola Gold for Dan Skelton impressed on her comeback run and could be the main danger off just 5 points higher here. Ibleo is the one being supported in the market and with Venetia Williams coming to life in this sort of weather he has to be respected especially if conditions continue to worsen.

Wetherby 2.10 bet365 Mares’ Hurdle (Listed Race) (Class 1) 2m

We were with Silver Streak at Kempton when VERDANA BLUE could only manage second so while backers would have been a bit disappointed on reflection it wasn’t a bad run. She was eased when beaten and should step forward from that run significantly. As long as the ground doesn’t become too testing I think she’ll win this and win it well.

Whitehotchillifili made an encouraging start over hurdles last season winning at Wincanton and Exeter and was set a stiff task in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival but wasn’t disgraced so looks the one to give the favourite a race. Midnights’ Gift probably best of the rest.

Down Royal 2.25 Ladbrokes Champion Chase (Grade 1) 3m

Our only race from Down Royal on ITV today and it looks an absolute cracker. A race in which Gigginstown have dominated over the years and have a strong hand in this again with 4 runners of the 9. DELTA WORK bids to take this after only finishing fourth last year but his jumping has improved a lot since then and I’d expect a lot less mistakes this time around. He is the highest rated in the field and if running to the form of either of his wins or to the level of his Cheltenham Gold Cup run he will take all the beating.

Presenting Percy will be interesting with Gordon Elliot now but the main danger looks to be Chris’s Dream who didn’t run great in the Gold Cup but has the form to be more than competitive in this and goes particularly well fresh.

Wetherby 2.45 bet365 Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The West Yorkshire Hurdle) (Class 1) 3m

Another fiercely competitive race and I’ve taken a chance on one in COPPERHEAD. He was progressive over fences last season winning at Wincanton, Newbury and Ascot before falling in the RSA. He does usually need his first run of the season but back over hurdles he may be capable of running a big race and I think he’s been too easily dismissed in the market here. Tizzard is struggling for form at the moment but the yard has to turn a corner soon and I’m tempted in by the odds.

Lisnagar Oscar is also a thorough stayer and sprung a 50/1 upset in the Stayers. Not seen since but stable going well and is respected on return. Roksana is a likeable mare who could also put in a big performance on return. Next Destination has switched hands from Mullins to Nicholls now so it will be interesting to see how he runs as he was a very talented novice hurdler.

Ascot 3.05 Sodexo Handicap Hurdle (Listed Rac) (GBB Race) (Class 1) 1m71/2f

Wide open race with plenty of these having questions to answer. KID COMMANDO could be well handicapped on his handicap hurdle debut. He goes well fresh as he showed when winning a bumper nicely on reappearance last season. His win on hurdles debut by 11 lengths was impressive and the 3rd behind Highway One O Two looks solid and he will take some beating if fully fit for this.

Countister ran a cracker in the County Hurdle in 2019 but has been awful since, if back in form he must have a chance but I would expect Sebastopol to be the main danger with a lot better recent form on offer. Malaya bounced back when second here on final start last season and could run well off the same mark.

Ascot 3.40 Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) (Class 1) 3m

This is a ridiculously tough race to call with just one of these having run this season and that was a shocking run by Townshend. I will take a chance with top weight BLACK CORTON who was so consistent in handicaps last season and gets to run in this carrying 2 pounds less. That combined with a wind-op could just bring out the extra needed to turn last years third into a win.

Last year’s 2nd Regal Encore hasn’t had a run this year unlike last year and will probably need this. Commanche Red is my idea of the main danger as he may still have more to come off of 150. Valtor is being backed for Nicky Henderson and goes well here so also comes into the reckoning.
