Keeneland 4.30 Race 1 Nyquist Stakes (61/2f)

We are on the dirt for the first race in the Breeders’ Cup 2020 and a few promising sorts line-up for this. HIGHLY MOTIVATED looks a classy sort who is unlucky not to be unbeaten after getting bumped early on debut before losing out by a neck. He stepped forward on that run winning a decent maiden at Belmont and will go very close if stepping forward again.

Upstriker will be better than he showed at the track last month as he was up to over a mile that day and led early. He will be able to slot in behind the leaders here which will suit and he will be the main danger for sure.

Keeneland 5.05 Race 2 Songbird Fillies’ Stakes (61/2f)

Another competitive race and the one I think is being overlooked is FARSIGHTED for Rusty Arnold. This Bernardini filly comes here straight from her maiden success which came here over 6f at the beginning of last month. That was a very taking display and I loved the way she quickly settled it, quickening away. She is sure to improve again and if she does she looks a danger to all here. She was notably strong at the finish and her dam won over a mile so she will hopefully be finishing best of all.

Joy’s Rocket wasn’t disgraced in a Grade 1 last time and will appreciate the drop back in trip. She has to be feared but the value looks to have been squeezed out of her price. California Lily made a winning start and shouldn’t be underestimated. It wouldn’t surprise me if she was one of the late market movers given her profile.

Keeneland 5.05

Farsighted 11/2 each way

Keeneland 5.40 Race 3 Bryan Station Stakes (1m1f)

This looks like a competitive renewal with some good sorts turning up for this. I have it between two FANCY LIQUOR and Belmont Derby second No Word. The former appeals more with form figures of 132311 and is never far away. I feel this trip will suit the selection slightly better than No Word who may be better over a longer trip. He is progressing with every run and should hold his own at this level.

No Word is the danger if running to the level of the Belmont Derby second ahead of Mo Ready and will be fighting out the finish with the selection.

Keeneland 5.40

Fancy Liquor 4/1

Keeneland 6.15 Race 4 McConnell Springs Stakes (Fillies And Mares) (6f)

Another tough race to call and initially I did like the look of Wildwood’s Beauty but her best form looks to have come over 7f so she may just be vulnerable to one or two speedier types. Unholy Alliance has to be feared under Tyler Gaffalione. She has four career wins to her name already and has earned a crack at this company in a bid to try and get some Black Type to her name. I’m happy to take the pair on though with BYE BYE J. Steve Asmussen’s filly won a similar contest to this at Prairie Meadows with Headland back in second. She then had 3 months off the track before reappearing in a Grade 2 at Saratoga where she could never land a blow. That was a stronger race though so I’m happy to forgive that. She returned to form when third in a Listed race at Laurel Park last month and if she builds on that she rates the one to beat.

Headland is overpriced at 10/1 and may be the one to chase her home. Like I said Wildwood’s Beauty will be doing all her best work late and may be the value to run into a place. Amy’s Challenge was turned over at a short price when last seen but had some strong form in the book prior to that so is a lively danger.

Keeneland 6.15

Bye Bye J 5/1 each way

Keeneland 6.50 Race 5 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes (Grade 2) (1m5f)

The first of the graded races on the card and in all honesty it doesn’t look a great Grade 2 with some of the form these bring into it. That said a couple of these deserve their place in the field with solid form at this level. RY’S THE GUY bolted up at Churchill Downs last time and the switch to dirt seemed to bring out a lot of improvement. He has been holding his own at graded level on turf and could be better on dirt. Drawn 8 he will go very close.

The main danger has to be Danny California who is on a 4-timer and would have been the selection but being drawn 14 he will need a lot of luck in-running but his class should make him competitive.

Keeneland 7.30 Race 6 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 2) (5/12f)

Wesley Ward has four entries here plus three reserves and his best chance looks to be GOLDEN PAL. He has a tough draw out in 14 (widest of all) but looks to have the class to overcome that. He was beaten just a neck by The Lir Jet in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot. He was only run down in the final few strides so perhaps it took a fair bit out of him as he was given a couple of months to recover. Turned out fresh at Saratoga in August he destroyed the field travelling strongly throughout before coasting home. He is held in high regard and if he improves again he will have this field in trouble under Irad Ortiz Junior.

Bodenheimer is possibly the main danger as he has Cowan held on that last run. He’ll need to find more to even trouble the favourite though. Of the rest After Five and Lipizzaner should come with their efforts and make some each way appeal.

Keeneland 8.10 Race 7 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf presented by Coolmore America (Grade 1) (1m)

Now we are into the top races the 4 Grade 1s on the card and this is a race Europe tend to dominate and they look to have a solid chance again this year. Battleground looks the rightful favourite on form but NEW MANDATE at double the odds (8/1 at the time of writing) looks a great each way bet. He has won his last 3 with the form working out very well. His Group 2 win at Doncaster over a mile was very impressive and has put in good time figures in his recent runs. With Frankie in the saddle again I would be very disappointed if he wasn’t fighting out the finish.

Battleground should be right in the mix and is the main danger stepping up to a mile with Cadillac one who could bounce back from a fourth in the Dewhurst with the mile looking his best trip.

Keeneland 8.50 Race 8 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) (1m1/2f)

Princess Noor went through the sales ring at the Ocala Breeze-up sales earlier this year for $1.35million! She has been ante-post favourite for this race for a while after three wins in California where she won by comfortable margins. While she has been visually impressive she hasn’t really faced anything of serious potential and I think her credentials will be tested here. At the odds I’m willing to try and take her on and the one I’ve come down on is DAYOUTOFTHEOFFICE for Timothy Hamm. This filly is also unbeaten winning all three starts and I think she can step forward again so looks a danger to all.

Princess Noor is a big threat but Simply Ravishing shouldn’t be overlooked either. She impressed winning the Alcibiades over course and distance 5 weeks ago but did seem to get a soft time of it up front and this will be tougher.

Keeneland 9.30 Race 9 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Grade 1) (1m)

This race features two fillies that we love in Campanelle and Miss Amulet who have been top class in sprint races especially the former who was ultra impressive in France when last seen. That said this race is over a mile and their strengths appear to be at a shorter distance. AUNT PEARL looks the one to be with in this after making it 2 wins from 2 with her win in the Jessamine Stakes at the track last month. She has won both races comfortably and looks a talented filly who will improve again. She won’t have too much competition on the speed and may just slip the field like she has done in her first two wins.

Plum Ali looks the main danger with 3 wins from 3 runs and is on a similar upward curve like the selection. Alda is one that could run a big race at a decent price (20/1 at the time of writing) as her form isn’t far off the best.

Keeneland 10.15 Race 10 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (Grade 1) (1m1/2f)

Hopefully it’ll be worth the wait to see Steve Asmussen’s JACKIE’S WARRIOR. This colt is a perfect 4 from 4 having taken three graded stakes, the last two at the top level. His first Grade 1 came in the Hopeful at Saratoga where he had too much for rivals. Reinvestment Risk chased him home but was no match on the day. He improved again to win the Champagne at Belmont where he was utterly dominant and the same horse finished second. He was by no means stopping at the end of the mile last time and his speed could easily have these burnt off already anyway. It’s a good field but he looks to have the most potential and I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t remain unbeaten.

Obviously Reinvestment Risk could be the one to chase him home again but Essential Quality brings potential to the table and may have other ideas. For as promising as he looks though he’ll have his work cutout to peg back this favourite.
