Newbury 1.15 BetVictor Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Leg 3 Of The Veterans’ Chase Series) Class 2 3m2f

These veteran races can often throw up some brilliant finishes and this looks another belter with some well-known individuals lining up. PRESENT MAN is joint-top rated here and I think he is the one to beat under Bryony Frost. He showed a great attitude to win a similar event to this on return from 335 days off the track at Chepstow in October. He goes well fresh so that performance didn’t come as a huge surprise but he was sent off 12/1 so that tells you how competitive that race was. He wasn’t disgraced in the Badger Ales next time and while he didn’t really fire when well backed last time he could easily bounce back here and win this. He’s one I’d want to keep on side against a field like this as he knows how to win which can count for a lot.

Singlefarmpayment will probably come there travelling on his beloved faster ground but I highly doubt he’ll go through with his effort as he is without a win since 2016 now. Sir Ivan and West Approach are feared most but the latter also finds it hard to win and has to be smuggled into it. Sir Ivan will probably give the selection most to think about as he has been running consistently well.

Kelso 1.30 bet365 Premier Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) Class 1 2m2f

This looks a cracking little race with some great form on offer with most of these having won plenty of times in their short careers. Top two MY DROGO and Bareback Jack look to have the form edge. The former took a good Supreme Trial at Ascot in December and that form has worked out so well since. He does have to give weight away to the field as a result of that but there is plenty more to come from Dan Skelton’s gelding and I think he’ll be extremely hard to beat.

Bareback Jack is the main danger with 4 wins from 4 and the step-up in trip should suit him and he and the selection should battle it out. Lucky One for Paul Nicholls should go well for a long way but I am not sure if he will hold them all off from the front in what looks a strong race.

Newbury 1.50 BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Class 1 2m4f

This is ridiculously competitive so I’ve taken two against the field. The first of those and my most confident bet is UMBRIGADO for David Pipe and David Noonan. This son of Stowaway has won his last two and looks to have a bright future over fences. A 5lb rise doesn’t look enough to stop another big run and even though this represents another step up I think he’s going to go close. Lots to like.

The other horse that caught the eye was WINDSOR AVENUE for Brian Ellison and Theo Gillard. Now he does come here with enough to prove but connections try headgear now and at 20/1 it wouldn’t surprise me to see this sort of test suit and a return to form. He probably needs a bit more help from the handicapper but if things drop right he could run better than his odds suggest. Grand Sancy, Killer Clown and The Big Bite all made the shortlist and look lively dangers.

Kelso 2.05 bet365 Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Class 2 2m5f

A fairly open handicap with a couple of these looking to be on lenient marks. MEGA YEATS has been off the track plenty over the last two years but she is running off a mark of 124. Considering just under 2 years ago she won off a mark of 135 this could be a very good mark as she is only a 7 year old. I wouldn’t usually back a horse based on a mark 2 years ago but she ran really well in a bumper recently and it does suggest the spark is still there. I won’t be surprised if she is quite well-in at the weights for her new yard.

Flash Collonges is the other I think may have a bit to come on his handicap debut. He is 2 wins from 3 in the races he has completed and based on his Wincanton win last time there could be more to come. War Lord and Torn And Frayed look to be best of the rest.

Doncaster 2.20 Virgin Bet Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Class 1 3m1/2f

Not the best renewal of this race but 1 or 2 of these look like they could be fairly good. WYNN HOUSE ran in much hotter company last time out and now running against her own sex in a Listed race she will take all the beating. Her run in the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Trial looks like solid form and they clearly think a fair bit of her running her in that race. She was never out of the placings before that race and I expect her to record a 3rd win this season.

Go Millie Go looks the danger as she has impressed in her last two and is going for a hat-trick but she was beaten by the selection quite comfortably in September so has work to do to try and reverse that.

Kelso 2.40 bet365 Premier Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m71/2f

Two For Gold and Aso are closely tied and the latter has a 9lb swing in the weights so I expect him to reverse that recent form. I’m happy to take both on though and last year’s winner DEFINITLY RED is the one I want to side with. He hasn’t been seen since falling behind Yorkhill at Newcastle but he’s been given time since and goes well fresh so I can see him serving it up to the market principals here on what could be a good day for Brian Ellison.

Cloth Cap is a big danger having won the Ladbroke Chase impressively when last seen. This is a big ask at the weights though and connections will have the Grand National in mind so he won’t be given a hard time of it. Lake View Lad may prove the greater danger at these weights and should run well.

Doncaster 2.55 Virgin Bet Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Class 2 2m1/2f

This looks between the two at the top of the market both have very different profiles but RIKOBOY looks the solid option. He has improved on both runs since going chasing again with a very good win at Market Rasen before losing out by half a length at Musselburgh in a race which is working out very well. He is only up 6lb and looks to have more to come as he is only a 5 year old. I would be surprised if he wasn’t bang there at the finish and that is being reflected in the betting.

The other horse at the head of market and the main danger to the selection is Getaway Trump. He is 7lb below his last winning mark and his last run was promising so he could be a danger off a mark of 140. Zoffee is no forlorn hope on return but does need to jump better to have a chance.

Kelso 3.15 bet365 Morebattle Hurdle (A Handicap Hurdle) (GBB Race) Class 2 2m

Irish-raider The Shunter is all the rage here for Emmet Mullins and while he is open to further improvement he is short enough in the betting and I’m really keen on one against him. FAIVOIR made it 3-5 over hurdles when winning a Grade 2 at Haydock last time and the form of that win has been strongly franked since with the second Minella Drama winning the Sidney Banks at Market Rasen impressively and even the fourth Anythingforlove taking a competitive Grade 2 at Sandown on her next start. He’ll need more back in a handicap off a mark of 143 but he looks capable of better yet and has been a bit overlooked in here for me.

Solo has yet to run well since winning the Adonis so it’s a guessing game with him. I’d want to see him show something before I could part with my hard earned again. CHRISTOPHER WOOD is a likeable type and looks best of the rest despite a 7lb rise. He might be worth an each way saver at around 16/1.

Doncaster 3.30 Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Class 2 3m2f

This looks a pretty poor renewal of this race with the majority of these having plenty of questions to answer. That is why I think CANELO is a solid bet in the race. Not because I think he has much more improvement to come above a mark of 147 but he is running consistently well in better races than this and if he runs to his mark he will take some beating in what is a sub-par race.

Beware The Bear is dropping down the weights and could roll back the years but I think the main danger is Chef D’oeuvre who has had a wind-op and could be off a fair mark back chasing. Just A Sting looked a nice horse winning at Kempton in December 2019 but hasn’t kicked on since and has a lot to prove now.
