Kempton 2.05 Virgin Bet Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (Class 3) 2m

On The Slopes won this in good style last year so it can throw up a pretty useful horse from time to time. It looks a competitive renewal this year and a tentative vote goes to ZOFFEE for Philip Hobbs. I know this horse failed to finish last time but he made a terrible blunder at the fifth and was quickly pulled up after. His form prior to that was solid and racing off the same mark in what looks a winnable race I think he has a good chance. He should be up with the pace and will have first crack at the principals.

Fairway Freddy brings winning form to the table but that was a pretty weak race at Plumpton so he’ll need to find more to get competitive again. Clearly in good heart though so respected. Doukarov impressed at Leicester and with more to come looks the main danger given he is also likely to race prominently.

Uttoxeter 2.25 1834 Novices’ Handicap Chase (Class 2) 3m

I’m looking forward to seeing ST BARTS out again. He has won 3 from 6 under Rules and looks to be improving all the time. He relished the switch to the larger obstacles winning nicely at Newbury when last seen in December and given time since he is open to further progress. I expect him to push forward again and make it a test. I think when he’s good over his fences his jumping is a big asset so Dickie Johnson will be keen to utilise that.

Eclair Surf has won 2 of his last 3 and looked good at Sandown latest. He’s up 5lb but is the danger with more to come. Ask Me Early was massively disappointing when pulling up at Sandown and has a point to prove after that albeit looking good prior to that.

Kempton 2.40 Virgin Bet Silver Plate Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 2m5f

Both Debestyman and Son Of Camas have come out this morning so NIGHTBOATTOCLYRO is a very strong favourite here. It’s easy to see why given he’s won his last 3. I love the way he travels through his races and even up a further 6lb I think he has obvious claims of completing the four-timer. He will be switched off early before looking to pick these off one by one. Connections could have run him in the Martin Pipe yesterday but have opted for here instead.

Didtheyleaveuoutto surely still has potential but it has been far from smooth sailing recently and given he has fallen on his last three starts over hurdles he is going to need to brush up his jumping to land a blow. Could run well with a clean round but enough to prove for me. At a massive price I thought Lord Accord could run a nice race. He is around 20/1 at the time of writing and might be worth a small saver.

Uttoxeter 3.00 Burton Union Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 2m4f

Wilde About Oscar is likely to be popular here for the Skelton’s but they had a week to forget at Cheltenham and I’m not keen to take a short price about this one in all honesty. He has won 3 of his last 4 but did make a bad mistake in the Challow and this looks fiercely competitive again.

At the prices ROCKADENN makes plenty of appeal. I know Nicholls failed to get a winner at Cheltenham too but this horse is a decent price at 6/1 and while he didn’t look straightforward when winning at Taunton he clearly has a huge engine and if he keeps improving with Harry Cobden taking over the reigns he has scope to do better. He showed a good attitude last time and a 5lb rise shouldn’t be enough to anchor him. Both Gustavian and Mint Condition made the shortlist and even Illegal Model remains unexposed so this has strength in depth.

Kempton 3.15 Virgin Bet Handicap Chase (Class 3) 2m41/2f

Falco Blitz took another step forward to win at Southwell last time despite giving backers a heart attack at the last. He is a very good horse when he gets into a rhythm so it’s no surprise to see him at the top of the market. This is competitive though and he’ll face competition if he tries to go forward which could put him off his game a bit. He is prone to the odd bad mistake and at the prices I’ve decided to try and get him beat.

The one that appeals is SMARTY WILD for Hobbs and O’Brien. This horse was quite impressive over C&D in January and while he wasn’t disgraced at Warwick I just think they did too much with him early and didn’t give him a chance to see out the race as good as he can. Back at this venue he looks to have real likeable claims and he is probably the best place bet of the entire day as I think he’ll be bang there and with a bit of luck will win.

Uttoxeter 3.35 Marston’s 61 Deep Midlands Grand National (Listed Race) 4m2f

Cracking race! Nicholls won it last year with Truckers Lodge and the 9yo is back to defend his crown. He won the race by 18 lengths and was slammed 14lb by the handicapper as a result. He hasn’t had the same prep sadly unseating at Kelso before only seventh in the Welsh National. I wouldn’t rule him out completely but it’s a big ask. The stable are also resented by Highland Hunter who looks a nice galloping type but he has to prove he can stay this trip strongly and I’m not hugely convinced.

I’ve decided to take a chance on the unexposed TIME TO GET UP who was massively impressive at Wincanton. Connections have swerved a crack at the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival so must fancy their chances in this. He shaped as a thorough stayer and with further improvement a near certainty I think he has a really good chance here. The yard won this back in 2010 with Synchronised and while it’s too early to draw comparisons I do think this horse has a really bright future. Screaming Colours chased home The Big Dog at Punchestown last time and that’s good form so he is feared most. Final Nudge has a decent weight swing with the selection and makes most appeal of the rest at a decent each way price if you fancied a saver.
