Newcastle (AW) 1.45 williamhill.com Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (Class 2) 6f

Fiercely competitive handicap to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday and it won’t surprise you we’ve taken two against the field. I am confident of a big run from STREAMLINE as this Due Diligence colt really impressed me on penultimate start. He stayed on strongly to win at Wolverhampton and I know things didn’t go to plan at Kempton but given time since with the hood on I think he still has scope off a mark of 97. I’d been even more confident if the stable were in form so that is a bit of a negative but at 14/1 he looks worth the play.

Given the shape of the race I’ve had an each way saver on JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE for Kevin Ryan. This horse met trouble when down the field at York last time and he previously ran a cracker when second to Mondammej at Pontefract. He is off his last winning mark now and if things pan out favourably he is no 28/1 shot in my book so he has to be included. Dangers include Woven, Mondammej and at a big price Victory Heights could run well.

Newmarket (July) 2.05 Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) Class 1 6f

Another tough race to call with a lot of potential on show. I’ve taken two against the field again but my main hope is ROCK MELODY with Stefano Cherchi in the saddle. This filly by Fascinating Rock made a bright start winning on debut at Redcar. She was sent off at 16/1 that day so clearly not a great deal was expected but she showed bright speed to travel into it powerfully before scampering clear. The second has won since and the third acquitted herself well yesterday so the form has been franked. This demands another big step forward but I think she’s worth chancing at a nice each way price. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her go off shorter than 9/1.

Experience may well play a part here so I’ve also had a saver on LITTLE PRAYER for Richard Spencer. This filly has taken time to come to hand but impressed at Nottingham and is open to further progress so might have gone under the radar a bit here. She might push forward and race handily so if she gets first run on a few, especially those without experience, she could run better than the 25/1 is suggesting. Najat is a worthy favourite a big danger and Cachet also made the shortlist having ran a big race in the Albany.

Newcastle (AW) 2.20 William Hill Chipchase Stakes (Group 3) Class 1 6f

This looks like a fair renewal of the Chipchase Stakes but VALUE TIP is a horse I have been waiting for to run again after beating a good field on AW Championships day at Lingfield and I think he has plenty to come. He won that race with a bit in hand and his form behind Rohann has worked out very well after he won at Royal Ascot. That short head loss was his only defeat in his 4 career starts and if he steps forward again he will be tough to beat in this.

Khuzaam is interesting dropping down in trip as he is a classy sort, it is just whether 6 furlongs is too short for him which I suspect it might. Good Effort might be an each way price but on his previous form he could be in the mix, especially as one of Lingfield runs last year was won in the best time on offer in this race. Chil Chil is the other one in this I think could run a big race based on her last two runs and she might emerge as the main threat.

Newmarket (July) 2.40 Close Brothers Fred Archer Stakes (Listed Race) Class 1 1m4f

Sadly Max Vega has come out this morning so just the 6 horses heading to post now. As much as I was trying to get LOGICIAN beat initially I have to admit it looks a good opportunity now. He might just come through on the bridle and win this comfortably so I’ve decided to put him forward albeit at not much of a price. I do think the likes of Desert Encounter and Outbox will pose some sort of a threat but ultimately the fav should have too much class.

It will be interesting to see who makes it as Outbox can go forward but I don’t think Rob Havlin would want to have Logician too far away and he might always be going best. Not going to get rich backing him but from a racing perspective it would be good to see him back in the winners enclosure.

Newcastle (AW) 2.55 William Hill Pick Your Places Northumberland Vase Handicap (Class 2) 2m1/2f

The consolation race for those that didn’t make the cut for the big race today and it usually goes to one nearer the top of the weights. With the 20 going to post I have had two bets in this race with my main hope INDIGO TIMES arriving here after the perfect prep run with an easy win at Kempton over this trip. His form at 2 miles is among the best on offer with 3 wins and never being out the places. I think he may still have more to come and a mark of 84 looks fair and he should go close at a decent each way price.

My second bet in the race is Newcastle hero COSMELLI who runs his best races at the track and I had to have an each way bet on him at 20/1 (price at time of writing). He lost out in the main race last year by 2 lengths and the same in this race two years ago and I expect him to show his experience off this mark. The main danger has to be East Asia who is progressing with every run this season, winning 3 from 3 easily and although he has done it on dirt he has to prove himself on this surface so I am happy to oppose with my two selections.

Newmarket (July) 3.15 Close Brothers Criterion Stakes (Group 3) Class 1 7f

Kinross has been taken out this morning possibly due to the ground becoming too quick? I think GLORIOUS JOURNEY can take full advantage now under the Doyler. This horse is a dual Group 2 winner over this trip and he ran a good race in defeat when third to Kinross at Haydock last month. He will be held up for a late run and if things drop his way he would have a big chance of having a say in the finish here. He is very consistent so it’s hard to see him at the very least out of the frame.

Motakhayyel is clearly expected to perform better on this sounder surface so I’d probably put him forward as the main danger. Lord Of The Lodge is the pace angle so he should set it up for the closers and is probably vulnerable. Royal Crusade is lightly raced and could also have more to come so is respected.

Newcastle (AW) Tapeta 3.30 William Hill Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Class 2 2m1/2f

The big race of the day at Newcastle and it looked as competitive as ever before Trueshan was put into the mix after missing Royal Ascot due to unsuitable ground. He is the class horse in the race by a long way but as a result shoulders 10 stone 4 pounds which is a massive ask and it would be a phenomenal effort if he could it. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of pace on so GALATA BRIDGE could have it his own way in front. He ran a cracker in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot and I think he has more to come at this trip. The way he finished only 3 lengths down after leading at Ascot suggests this trip is well within his grasp and he is lightly raced. I expect him to ping the gates under Luke Morris and give it a good go on the lead.

At a bigger price ISLAND BRAVE interested me back on the all weather at this trip as he has raced plenty of these off level weights previously and held his own. He gets weight from most of these on Saturday so I was surprised he was 25/1 at the time of writing and he is worth a bet on a surface he thrives on. The main danger is obviously Trueshan but Dubious Affair and at a bigger price Mildenburger both have fair chances but I am happy with my two at the prices.

Curragh 3.45 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1) 1m4f

This might as well be named after Aidan O’Brien since he has won it 14 times now. He runs 4 this year with HIGH DEFINITION looking like his best chance of a winner. He was 2 from 2 as 2 year old but did receive his first defeat in the Dante to the re-opposing Hurricane Lane. Hurricane Lane had the benefit of a prep run that day and has shown how good the form is running a good 3rd in the Derby since. They found it tough to get a prep run into High Definition before the Dante due to desperate ground and he will come on a bundle for that run. He looks like he is crying out for this trip and now fully fit he should be the one to beat.

Hurricane Lane is the main danger as that Derby 3rd can be marked up as he lost two shoes in the run and will be my forecast in the race. Mojo Star ran a cracker in the Derby and was knocked into so could be better again here but I still fancy the selection to beat them both at his best. Wordsworth has always been well talked about but just hasn’t done it at this level yet so has it to prove for me.
