Newmarket (July) 1.50 bet365 Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Class 2 1m2f

Mark Johnston has dominated in this in recent years but his sole representative Headingley just isn’t running well to be the play here. I’ve decided to chance PETER THE GREAT for John and Thady Gosden. This New Approach colt looks progressive and he made it 2 wins from 3 starts staying on strongly over this trip last time. He makes his handicap debut now and a mark of 92 surely underestimates him? This is competitive but I can’t see how he isn’t going to run a big race under Dettori. Indigo Jones, Lord Protector, King Of Clubs and Headingley could make this a real pace burn-up and I can see him sitting quietly before picking his way through.

Dubai Honour catches the eye going up in trip after running a big race to finish fourth in the Britannia last time and I think he could be the main danger to the selection as he looks to have further improvement to come. Foxes Tales asserted in good style last time but was hanging a bit and has gone up 9lb so this certainly demands more.

York 2.05 williamhill.com Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Class 4 1m4f

I found this race quite hard to work out so decided to chance one at a big price in EAGLE COURT for David O’Meara. This son of Free Eagle won three times last season and while he hasn’t produced that sort of form in 3 runs this term to date I think he could bounce back down a further 2lb to a mark of 86 now. He is just 1lb above his last winning mark and under patient tactics if this race falls his way I think he will run better than a 14/1 chance. He was given way too much to do in the Zetland Gold Cup last time so hopefully he doesn’t get too far back as I can see him finishing strongly.

Cormier is favourite for Ellison and won well at Pontefract last time. He is still well handicapped on his hurdling form so I can see him running well but he does look short enough in the betting which was enough to put me off. Ispahan didn’t look to handle the faster ground last time so with a bit of cut in the ground here with rain forecast he could bounce back.

Newmarket (July) 2.25 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Sponsored by bet365) (Group 2) (Fillies) Class 1 6f

The Albany form looks like the best on offer with the 1-2-3 all lining up here the winner that day SANDRINE looks to be the one to beat. She went off 16/1 in that race but is clearly a very good horse to win the Albany nicely. She improved from her first win substantially to make it 2/2 and she will take all the beating if handling the quicker ground.

The dangers look like the 2nd and 3rd in the Albany Hello You and Oscula but I actually think Desert Dreamer who handles quicker ground well could be a big price. It will be interesting to see who leads as Ellade certainly doesn’t lack speed but Oscula likes to go forward so they might take each other on which will help the others.

York 2.40 William Hill Summer Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Class 1 6f

A return to 6f is definitely a big plus for Vadream and she has to be respected but she is short enough for a filly that tends to find one or two too good and I’m chancing The Queen’s horse LIGHT REFRAIN for Haggas. This Frankel filly won really well over this trip at Nottingham in May and she backed that up when beaten just a length at Haydock. I know things didn’t go to plan in the Jersey last time but she is better than that and this track suits her well so I think she’ll bounce back.

Onassis is plenty talented and she shaped better than the bare result at Royal Ascot back from 8 months off so looks one of the dangers along with the favourite. Dandalla ran quite well in the Commonwealth Cup last month and also made the shortlist but will need to build on that to trouble the market principals here.

Newmarket (July) 3.00 bet365 Trophy (Heritage Handicap) Class 2 1m6f

A wide open bet365 Trophy but I do think ARTHURIAN FABLE has a great chance on the fast surface. He ran a cracker in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot and gets a 3 pound swing with Amtiyaz in this. All of his best runs are on faster surfaces so as long as we don’t get too much rain he could go very close in an open race.

There are plenty of dangers including Prince Alex, Amtiyaz and Global Storm but I am going to have a small each way bet on VOLCANIC SKY bouncing back at his best trip. He hasn’t been himself on his last two runs but if back to his previous form the mile and 3 quarter trip could see him in a better light and 40/1 is too good to leave alone.

Newmarket (July) 3.35 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (Fillies & Mares) Class 1 1m

This years Falmouth has attracted a much bigger field than most years which is great to see. It features plenty of horses who have already met in the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes plus they are taking on older horses for the first time. I actually fancy MOTHER EARTH to reverse the Coronation Stakes form with Alcohol Free now she gets faster ground again. She won the 1,000 Guineas on fast ground and has run very well in defeat on her last two runs on nearly bottomless ground. She will appreciate this ground much more and will go very close in this at a decent price.

Alcohol Free is favourite for the race at the time of writing and she will be dangerous as always but I actually think Snow Lantern will be a greater threat. She still has a lot more scope for improvement than most and with a clear run at Royal Ascot she would have been much closer to Alcohol Free. The one that could be overpriced is Saffron Beach who ran well in the Guineas before putting in her first bad run in the Oaks. She will be much better back down in trip but given my confidence for Mother Earth I’ve decided against an each way saver on this occasion.
