Glorious Goodwood 1.50 Unibet ‘you’re On’ Chesterfield Cup Handicap (Class 2) 1m2f

A fiercely competitive start to Glorious Goodwood so it won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field in the hope of making a winning start. My first selection and main play in the race has to be MIGRATION off the back of that eye-catching run at Salisbury last month. He was given a shocker by SDS and was denied a run when trying to make headway. He had to switch left again and ran on strongly but sadly those in front had flown. That was his first start for 641 days so he is sure to strip fitter and he is clearly well handicapped off a mark of 95. I really don’t see how he doesn’t get involved here.

Given how open it looks I’m also going to have an each way saver on JOHNNY DRAMA for Andrew Balding. This horse thrived on the AW last season winning four in a row over the winter. He went off the boil after but was very much back to his best winning the John Smith’s Cup at York earlier this month and even up 5lb I think he’s been a bit overlooked here. I know he’ll need a career best on the figures but this could pan out favourably and he is just too big in the betting to leave out.

Glorious Goodwood 2.25 Unibet Vintage Stakes (Group 2) 7f

This years Vintage Stakes doesn’t look as deep as some renewals but the top 3 in the market look to have it between them on all known form. BERKSHIRE SHADOW edges it for us after his very good win in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was only his second run and he looked a classy horse making it 2 out of 2. If in the same form on this softer ground he is the one to beat as he is likely to step forward again.

The main danger is Lusail who won the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket last time out and will handle the softer ground I just think the selection has a higher ceiling as Lusail has run 4 times already. Eldrickjones has been a tad unlucky behind the two at the head of the market, breaking slowly and finding trouble in the run. With Berkshire Shadow and Lusail carrying penalties he is better off at the weights and with a bit of luck here could get involved but the top two tick most of the trends so he could be running for third.

Goodwood 2.25

Berkshire Shadow 9/4

Glorious Goodwood 3.00 Unibet Lennox Stakes (Group 2) 7f

Charlie Appleby holds the key here with the top 2 in the betting. Space Blues is favourite at the time of writing and is the preferred choice of William Buick. He won this last year so he will have his supporters again but getting weight I fancy the younger legs of stablemate CREATIVE FORCE to improve past him. This son of Dubawi has looked a very classy horse this season winning four in a row with an impressive win in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. He was somewhat of an eye-catching in the July Cup behind Starman only actually beaten 2 lengths and I think he can get back to winning ways here. They should go hard and if he gets the luck coming through I think he’ll be finishing best of all under James Doyle.

Space Blues is the obvious danger and I can see them finishing 1-2. Safe Voyage beat an average field at Chester last time and he’ll need plenty more to get competitive here. Kinross impressed at Haydock and might be the value angle to hit the frame. Happy Power has rather lost his way but it wouldn’t surprise me if he went well for a long way before being reeled in.

Glorious Goodwood 3.35 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) 2m

It wasn’t long ago Stradivarius was an easy pick in most staying races (won this 4 times in a row) but I am opposing him for the 5-timer. TRUESHAN is my pick to dethrone the superstar stayer now he has favoured conditions. He was pulled out of the clash at Royal Ascot in the Gold Cup due to fast ground and went to Newcastle for the Northumberland Plate instead. Trueshan carried a massive weight in that race and still ran a huge race. He looks primed for this and even though it is his first run at the track he will thrive in conditions and should be troubling Stradivarius.

Stradivarius is still the main danger but I am just not sure he is at his best if it comes up soft and he would need to be close to his best to win this for the fifth time. It was a bog at Ascot when Trueshan beat him on Champions Day. It won’t be that bad but it will be a leveller for sure. Ballydoyle have 4 entered for this with Ryan Moore on the Derby winner Serpentine but I actually like Sir Ron Priestley to run yet another huge race to chase the top 2 home.

Goodwood 3.35

Trueshan 5/2

Glorious Goodwood 4.10 Back To Goodwood Handicap (Class 2) 5f

This is really tough! I’ve decided to take a chance on JABBAROCKIE bouncing back here. He looked better than ever making a winning return at Musselburgh in April and improved again to beat Count D’Orsay at Chester in May. He did too much when last in the Temple Stakes at Haydock when last seen but he is much better than that and if you can forgive him that back into handicap company here I think he’ll go close under William Buick. He is off a career high-mark but if he can get the fractions right he could string these out.

Last year’s winner ONLY SPOOFING is also worth backing despite being 6lb higher in the weights. He has been holding his form well since winning over in Ireland at Navan in May running huge in the Dash before going close at the Curragh last month and then looking a bit one paced at Ascot. He handles soft ground and I think we’re going to see a big run and at a decent each way price. King Of Stars is fav at the time of writing and looks one of the main dangers. El Astronaute is fast and also shouldn’t be entirely ruled out.

Glorious Goodwood 4.45 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 2) 6f

Not a lot to go on but I do feel this is open to a newcomer with the form on show of those with a run looking fairly average. Richard Hannon has a good record in the race and won it with a newcomer in 2018 with Ryan Moore riding. They team up with MONET’S SUNRISE who is well related and did cost nearly 100,000 guineas. Hannon knows how to ready one and he should go well first time out. Hopefully we see a bit of support for him in the market in the run up to the race.

Of the horses with form in the book Scattering looks the danger after a good run at Newcastle and if improving on turf he will go well in this. Muhaarar colt Harb for Mark Johnson is the other one I would keep an eye on in the betting as he is bread to be useful early on so could attract good money.

Glorious Goodwood 5.20 Unibet Fillies’ Handicap (Class 3) 1m

With both Caspian Queen and Star Seeking out this looks a good chance for Frankel filly ANGHAAM to regain the winning thread. She took a big step in the right direction to make all the running at Newmarket last month and I just feel the step up to 1m2f stretched her last time. She was probably too keen that day as well but certainly didn’t see it out as well as the others. It was a good race though as I rate the winner Portfolio so she wasn’t disgraced. Back down to a mile here will suit and if she handles the softer conditions I think she’ll go very close under Jim Crowley.

Riknnah was progressing fast prior to that blip at Newmarket last time. This mark should still be within reach but she has enough to prove off the back of that last run. If she bounces back she is one of the dangers. Pomelo won 2 of her first 3 starts and I think you can forgive her comeback run in the Sandringham so she might be the one to give the selection a race.

Glorious Goodwood 5.50 World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap (Class 3) 6f

It may be a small field in the last but this handicap is really competitive with none of these easily ruled out. I give the edge to course and distance winner ISABELLA SWAN. She ran a massive race to win here by nearly 3 lengths last month and I fully expect her to bounce back from her poor run at Bath last time out. Course form is usually pretty important at Goodwood and if she runs the way she did here last time she is the one to beat.

Mountain Brave is my idea of the danger as she goes well in softer conditions as she showed when winning at Chester last time and has only been raised 3lb. Caroline Dale has always been a fairly classy horse and she is more than capable off her current mark especially if the first-time headgear does the trick. Hopefully we can sign off Day 1 with a winner!
