York 1.50

I’ve been looking forward to York for a few weeks now but this is a fiercely competitive opener. I’m happy to give TWILIGHT CALLS another chance as I just thought things didn’t pan out for him at Goodwood last time and I think he can reverse that form with Whenthedealinsdone. The latter ran a career best last time but I think coming up the rail helped him like it did at Windsor and he is going to need more up 6lb. The selection has a progressive look to his form and this track could play to his strengths so it’s no surprise to see him challenging favouritism at the time of writing.

Given the nature of the race I’m also going to have an each way saver on LIVE IN THE MOMENT. This good looking chestnut won 5 from 6 last campaign and there wasn’t much wrong with his reappearance run back from 317 days off when beaten less than a length at Chelmsford. He should come on for that and while his mark is quite high he has been largely overlooked in the market so is worth covering.

York 2.25

A really small field for the Acomb Stakes this year but I have a feeling 1 or 2 of these could be contesting races at the top level over the next year or so. NOBLE TRUTH has the best form in the book with his debut third providing a Group 2 winner and plenty of other winners. He followed that up by beating Ehraz who reopposes today comfortably over 7 furlongs again. He should improve again and I think he will take some beating.

Ehraz has won since over 6 furlongs so I can’t see him reversing the form on that performance. The main danger is likely to be Dubawi Legend who won nicely on debut in a decent race and could potentially be anything on his second run but he will still have to improve to beat the selection who’s form looks rock solid.

York 3.00

I think Camelot colt SIR LUCAN will go off favourite here. He has shown the past two seasons that he needs his first outing and I thought that was a very encouraging run when beaten just half a length by the progressive Ottoman Emperor at Goodwood last month. This trip looks to be bringing the best out of him and with headgear applied now I can see him improving again and seeing these off in the closing stages. He has potential to be pretty smart and I’m hopeful he can start fulfilling that here.

Kemari is uncomplicated and made it 2 wins from his first 3 starts in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last time. The drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue but the 3lb penalty makes life tougher. I still think he is the danger to the selection though. High Definition was bitterly disappointing last time and has enough to prove.

York 3.35

I was gutted to see St Mark’s Basilica miss this with a setback but we get to see Love instead who will be looking to bounce back from a below-par run in the King George at Ascot. MISHRIFF finished in front of her that day and I fully expect John Gosden’s colt to do the same again on Wednesday. His form is amongst the best around at middle distances. He was just behind the Derby winner Adayar at Ascot which rated a really quick time on the clock. Before that he ran well in defeat behind St Mark’s Basilica and Addeybb. Love would have to run to her very best to beat him in that form.

Of the rest Mohaafeth has been building up to a big race all season and this could be it but he didn’t full convince last time at the track. Alcohol Free is obviously a horse we love and has had an outstanding season over a mile. She is worth a go at this trip but I am not sure we will see her at her best over it. With a few question marks about the other market rivals Alenquer could be under the radar and run a big race to chase the selection home.

York 4.10

Another tricky handicap but I do like the chances of PLATFORM NINETEEN for Michael Bell. He is still quite lightly raced for his age and couldn’t have been more progressive back in 2019 racking off a four-timer. He returned from a 648 day absence to win in the style of a talented horse at Beverley. While he couldn’t back that up at Goodwood that was a good race and it will leave him spot on for this now. There is nothing wrong with his handicap mark and I think he will get involved at the business end here. The only issue is there isn’t a great deal of pace around him and he will be better if he manages to get a toe in.

I’ve also chanced BODYLINE for Sir Mark Prescott. He steps up to 2 miles for the first time and I can see it really suiting him. He rounded off last campaign with a decent win at Yarmouth and was just as good on return bumping into the loveable Wise Eagle at Musselburgh. I think he is too big in the market and has to be included too. Dangers include Arcadian Sunrise and Future Investment with the latter running to a really consistent level.

York 4.45

This looks a bit of a lottery with the majority of these running in the best race they have contested so far. TWEET TWEET is the one I like here as she has posted some good times over this 5 furlongs and is clearly very quick. She seems to have scope for more and her win at Haydock was a big step-forward after a poor run when the yard were out of form. Other than that run she has won both her other races this season and the 4lb penalty gives her a great chance to follow up here at York.

The main danger is vying for favouritism at the time of writing and Tenaya Canyon will give the selection plenty to think about. She won a good race at Doncaster under Saffie Osbourne who takes 5lb off again and I see no reason why she doesn’t run well again. Of the rest Stars In The Night is a good eac way price and has decent place claims on her form this season.

York 5.20

The way Richard Hannon campaigns his horses has to be admired as he fears nobody! He sent BOSH over to Ireland last time and his colt ran a cracker, just being denied half a length by an exciting horse of Ger Lyons in Sacred Bridge. This son of Profitable is clearly thriving on his racing and while this obviously has strength in depth I do think he has a great chance if it doesn’t come too soon. He has finished 2112 and doesn’t know how to run a bad race. With plenty of pace around him he could get a lovely passage into the race and should have every chance.

I’ve liked JADHLAAN for a while so have had a saver on Mark Johnston’s grey colt. He won impressively over 5f here in June and while he found the July Stakes a bit too hot to handle he was very much back on track at Goodwood last time. If he builds on that again at a track he goes particularly well at I think he can run better than his odds suggest. Aristobulus has won 2 of his first 3 starts and looks best of the rest but he will need to improve again.
