1.50 Newmarket
Fooraat finished fifth in this last year and has run well in defeat this campaign looking a bit unlucky at York when last seen in July. She has to be respected but it wouldn’t surprise me if WEDDING DANCE managed to improve past her. I know we’re taking a bit of a chance as we haven’t seen her for 419 days but if she is fit enough to do herself justice she could go close here. Her form as a 2yo is quite decent and with more to come she gets the vote.
Dubai Love ran a very good race when third to Onassis off top weight in the Sandringham. She didn’t shape too badly in Dubai over the winter and off since and having undergone wind surgery she might be best of the rest. Soft Whisper might be a bit overpriced and is also respected.
2.05 York
This is competitive and I think it might pay to look away from the top of the market. Mr Wagyu has obviously been a great money-spinner for connections and he ran a cracker again when third in the Ayr Gold Cup. He has been on the go a while now though and might just struggle to keep performing to such a high level. Cairn Island is up 3lb but this is tougher than that Newmarket race. The one I’m chancing is TREACHEROUS for Ed De Giles. He has been shaping much better lately chasing home the progressive Capote’s Dream and then putting that Goodwood blip behind only beaten a length and three-quarters in the Portland last time.
Chairmanoftheboard went down less than a length at Doncaster and is probably best of the rest if things pan out favourably again. Music Society was poorly drawn in Ayr Silver Cup last weekend and it would be no surprise to see him bounce back here.
Newmarket 2.25
It’s a real shame Albaflora doesn’t take up this engagement and as a result it is ultra competitive now. I liked both SAYYIDA and FORBEARANCE so I’ve decided to back both. The former gets the 3yo allowance and she looked to be progressing nicely winning her first two starts of the season. She did disappoint to a certain extent when nailed late by Save A Forest but was back on track not beaten far in a strong race behind Free Wind in France. If she produces a similar performance here that will put her right in the mix.
Forbearance showed a cracking attitude to deny Domino Darling at York and then ran right up to form beaten just half a length at this level in Ireland last time. With more to come she can run a big race too. Dangers include Golden Pass having been beaten 7 lengths by Free Wind last time. Sea La Rosa has won 2 of her last 3 and also looks progressive so is worthy of plenty of respect in an open renewal.
York 2.40
Wide open handicap with the majority of the field in with a decent chance. LION TOWER edges it for me with the run of form he is on and only a 3lb rise to contend with. He won his last two over 7 furlongs which seems to be a trip he thrives at. His latest win looked as though he always had enough to repel any challenges and he has to be bang there again if in the same form.
La Trinidad looks as though he will go off favourite for this and in a bit of an easier race than his last few runs he has a live chance but the selection is double his price and may have more scope for improvement.
Newmarket 3.00
Majestic Glory is probably going to be fairly tough to beat here but she is too short in a field full of unexposed types. She is respected given her Sweet Solera form has been boosted and I wouldn’t put you off but JUMBLY appeals at a bigger price. This filly by Gleneagles is a perfect 2-2 for Roger Charlton and she struck me as a lovely prospect given the way she won at Kempton 3 weeks ago. She showed a sparkling turn of foot and while this is much tougher she remains open to any amount of improvement and I think she’ll go close.
Girl On Film also puts her unbeaten record on the line after making a winning start on the July Course last month. She has been thrown in at the deep end here but looks a nice type in the making. Oscula is more battle hardened than most and also has to be respected.
Newmarket 3.35
The Godolphin pair look to have it between them with it set to be an intriguing match-up between NOTEBOOK and Benbatl. The selection edges it for me as he gets 4lb from Benbatl. He has been off since the 2000 Guineas but that looks an incredible bit of form based on what Poetic Flare has done since. The yard are in-form so I don’t worry too much about the longer layoff plus he goes well fresh.
Benbatl has been a top-class representative for Godolphin winning the 2019 renewal of this race and finishing a close third last year. He should be spot on for this after a good run at Goodwood where his slow exit from the stalls cost him. Of the rest Sir Busker will get a decent pace to aim at so should prove best of the rest.
