Aintree 1.50
A wide open race to kick off the card at Aintree with 14 heading to post. JUSTATENNER won really nicely a Hexham 2 weeks ago after a string of solid efforts. He kept on really well so the 4lb penalty isn’t a worry and the extra furlong should play to his strengths at Aintree. He is 10 now so you can’t be 100% he can back it up at short notice but his trainer must think he is ready to go again and will go well.
The Grand Visor is favourite based on his Flat mark and the potential he has shown over hurdles so far and will be the main danger against the selection. Last year’s winner Dell’ Arca may be 12 but I wouldn’t rule him out off just 3lb higher.
Aintree 2.25
The last four renewals of this have been won by a 10 year old and BLACK OP fits the bill. He was a classy chaser at his peak and while he was out of sorts towards the end of last season I still think he has the ability to take out a race like this. It’s easier than what he has been facing and the fact he has been really well backed this morning is another notable positive as to his wellbeing. I expect him to be ridden prominently and he should have every chance.
Minellacelebration won this last year and is the obvious threat. He has won 3 times over this C&D and he looks capable off this mark. He wasn’t at his best at Uttoxeter on final start last season but like the selection could easily bounce back in calmer waters here. Of the rest it wouldn’t surprise me if Un Prophete ran well at a big price.
Aintree 3.00
This looks like a cracking renewal and I think NUTS WELL is the one to beat again. He looked as good as ever on his comeback run at Kelso running out a nice winner. That would have set him up perfectly to try and retain his crown. He goes well at Aintree after adding to the win in this race last season with a second in the Grade 1 Marsh Chase and he will go close in this and at a decent price.
There are plenty of dangers with the main one being Allmankind who we all know is very talented but has his quirks and I do worry about his jumping costing him in a tight race. Tamaroc Du Mathan could get involved but would need to improve a bit to beat the two already mentioned but he is only 6 so could be plenty more to come yet.
Aintree 3.35
Paul Nicholls has a good chance of a winner at Aintree on Sunday in the shape of NOTEBOOK. This French recruit won his bumper in good style at Plumpton and was doing all his best work late in the day when third in a Listed bumper at Newbury when last seen in February. He steps up in trip for hurdles debut and should take another big step forward. This looks winnable so I’m expecting him to make a winning start in this sphere.
Lakota Warrior goes hurdling after a wind op and the yard won this last year so he also has to be respected. This hopefully will throw up plenty of nice types going forward so it will be trackers at the ready. At a bigger price Doctor Ken could also be fairly useful after winning his bumper at Market Rasen. This is competitive but he is worth keeping an eye on in the market in the run up to the race.
Aintree 4.10
Really competitive handicap hurdle with plenty of these on seasonal debut and likely to improve a lot which makes it tricky. MACKLEDUFF stepped up to this trip to win his maiden and he improved a lot for that running out an 11 length winner. He could have plenty more to come at these longer trips and on good ground he will have a big say in this.
Some Day Soon has been kept on the go throughout the summer so will hold a fitness advantage but doesn’t look to have the scope of a few of these but could still be dangerous. A greater danger could be Pounding Poet who is on a hat-trick after improving with each run and could have stepped forward again.
Aintree 4.45
This looks a good chance for MORNING SPIRIT to make a winning chase debut. He did well over hurdles but always looked like he was built to jump a fence and this test should suit him well. The yard are in good form operating with a 20% strike in the past fortnight and I think he’s going to run a big race. He should be ridden on the pace and if he gets into a good rhythm he might not come back to them as he is a strong staying type.
Corach Rambler looked a promising sort over hurdles and I thought he shaped well when third on chase debut over a trip that would have been on the sharp side. He looks the obvious danger back up in trip. Thegallantway was a good third over fences at Worcester and shouldn’t be dismissed given he has experience on side.
Aintree 5.20
National Hunt Flat race to finish the card and it looks as tough as they always do. I am going to take a chance at a big price on MISS CHANTELLE who ran really green on debut at Fakenham and only finished 7 lengths down in third. The winner of that race has won twice since so it was a good race and she could be overpriced here.
Lady Excalibur has had two runs and finished first and second. She gives weight to the field but has the form to be dangerous to all of these. Walk In The Park filly Blue Suede Shoes is related to a bumper winner so could also run a big race on debut.
