Wetherby 1.20

An open race with a bundle of horses with the potential to improve significantly as well as veteran handicap chasers. I am going to take a chance on ROAD WARRIOR who finished last season landing a nice hat-trick in handicap chases. He won the final one by 11 lengths at Sedgefield. He runs off 6lb higher here after a satisfactory fourth on his comeback run over course and distance. He seems to be priced up based on that run and I feel he is a big each way price if resuming his improvement now fitter for that run.

Gericault Roque is intriguing with 2 wins last season over hurdles and he really could be anything but my only worry is he may be better at 2 miles currently but if finding natural improvement from 4 to 5 he could have the class to go very well. Revels Hill showed a good attitude to win over hurdles on final start and was a point winner so is also interesting.

Ascot 1.35

With heavy rain forecast for much of Saturday morning conditions could worsen at Ascot and if that happens that will suit KID COMMANDO as he tackles fences for the first time. He reached a decent level over hurdles with probably his best performance coming when winning a Listed race fresh here this time last year. He made all on that occasion and had them well strung out in behind. He went off the boil after that but if this switch to chasing perks him back up he still has potential.

Nassalam rather flattered to deceive over hurdles perhaps not reaching the heights he initially promised. He is another one who could do better over fences so has to be considered. SIZABLE SAM is a horse I like but he might need the experience and can take a bit of getting fit. Hopefully runs well with an eye to the future.

Wetherby 1.55

This looks like a solid renewal and you would expect most of these to be crossing paths for the rest of the season. With horses carrying over 11 stone due to penalties not having the best record in the race I am going to take a chance on ZAMBELLA. On her chase form from last season she would have a great chance so if translating that form to hurdles she will go very well under Daryl Jacob. Nigel Twiston-Davies has made a good start to the season as he often does which is another big plus to her chances.

Miranda and Molly Ollys Wishes come out at the top of ratings but do have to give weight away. That said I still expect them to be dangerous. Her Indoors should be race fit after a spin on the Flat at Nottingham and can’t be discounted either in what looks a competitive renewal.

Ascot 2.10

This looks a decent renewal and I’m looking forward to seeing BOOTHILL for Harry Fry. I had my eye on this horse for the Supreme at the Festival but sadly he suffered a setback and was put away for the rest of the season. When we last saw him at Taunton he ran out a very impressive winner and he looks a really nice horse in the making. He is coming up against battle-hardened horses like Soaring Glory but he has untapped potential and I think he can make a winning return.

The latter won the Betfair Hurdle really impressively at Newbury so much so that they had a crack at the Supreme with him where he ran well to finish fourth to Appreciate It. He has more to offer and is the obvious danger to the selection. Ajero remains a promising sort and also has to enter calculations in a good race.

Wetherby 2.30

An interesting renewal which very much revolves around PAISLEY PARK. He was last seen pulling up at Aintree with no explanation other than running flat. If the Paisley Park we know turns up here he should beat these. He goes well fresh and the fact they kept him in training suggests they have no worries about him and that is good enough for me. He is rated 8lb clear on ratings which suggests a 6lb penalty should be fine and he is clearly the one to beat.

Thomas Darby ran in that race Paisley Park pulled up in and ran really well to finish fourth. He would need to improve again at this trip to beat a Paisley Park at his best but will take advantage of the selection if he isn’t 100%. Master Tommytucker and Indefatigable are interesting up at 3 miles and will fight out the places in a good race.

Ascot 2.45

This is wide open and no doubt Editeur Du Gite will have his supporters chasing a hat-trick but I wouldn’t want to take a short price and I’m going to chance ONE FOR ROSIE for Kim Bailey. This son of Getaway is chasing 3 in a row himself after dotting up at Leicester and then backing that up beating a solid yardstick in Elvis Mail at Carlisle. If he can carry 11 stone 12 he could go close under David Bass. I think he’ll be ridden forward and hopefully he can get into a decent rhythm off the front.

Amoola Gold won this last year and has to be feared as he lost a shoe when last seen in the Grand Annual so you can put a line through that. Grey Diamond has more to offer over fences and also has to be considered but he does have a bit to find with Editeur Du Gite if that rival runs up to form.

Down Royal 2.50

Just the 5 going to post for this years renewal and Gold Cup winner MINELLA INDO is the one to beat. He was so impressive in the Gold Cup and he is now rated 175 which is 8lb better than any horse in this field. He won a Grade 3 on seasonal reappearance last season and I would expect Henry De Bromhead to have him near to his best for this and then tick him over with 2 or 3 more runs before trying to retain his Gold Cup crown in March.

Paul Nicholls sends last years King George winner Frodon over and he will go well from the front but I feel Minella Indo will track him all the way and not make it easy for him. Delta Work remains interesting but his jumping doesn’t always convince and his last couple of runs leave him with something to prove at the moment.

Wetherby 3.05

Cyrname is a short price to follow up last year’s 2 length win in the race and given his record fresh he is a danger to all but he is 11 years old now and won’t be getting any better so I’m siding with the younger legs of SHAN BLUE for Dan Skelton. I’ve always been a big fan of this horse and I know things haven’t gone to plan since that Kauto Star win at Kempton but he still retains potential for me. If he can drop his head and learn to settle he could be open to plenty more improvement yet. I love the way he jumps and with a clean round I think he can serve it up to Cyrname.

It’s not just a two-horse race though as Clondaw Castle was in good form when last seen chasing home Clan Des Obeaux at Aintree. He stays well and has to be feared too. Fusil Raffles got up in trip but I’m not convinced. He should come on for that reappearance second to Bravemansgame though and has a squeak.

Ascot 3.20

This looks a very competitive renewal with 2019 winner Vinndication heading the weights. This race usually favours horses carrying less weight and JOHNBB looks to have a cracking chance carrying just 10 stone 8. He is unexposed over 3 miles as he showed behind the classy Happygolucky at Aintree to cap off last season. He has only gone up 3lb for that and if in the same form he will go very close here.

Vinndication can never be discounted but he carries a lot more weight than his 2019 win so he would have to run to his best to take this. At a nice each way price ONE MORE FLEURIE could have a say after improving in novice chases last season. Other potential dangers include Jerrysback who could run well off a reduced mark here. Sojourn has had a wind op and also deserves a second look.

Wetherby 3.40

A tricky handicap hurdle to conclude ITV’s coverage on Saturday so it won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field in here. My main play would have to be RATTLE OWL for Jedd O’Keeffe. This son of Kayf Tara made it 2 from 3 in novice hurdles beating a good field at Sedgefield when last seen under this 5lb claimer. I like his profile now handicapping and I think he could continue his progression here and go close. He is a strong travelling sort who can still brush up his jumping so there should be more to come yet.

I also like the chances of HAAFAPIECE who I think is worth including. He has been eased a further 3lb since finishing down the field at Sandown and on the pick of his form he could have a big say off this mark. Dangers include Mackenberg who is likely to be sent off favourite. Our Surprise didn’t really fire at Fontwell but is better than that. Pagero is also worth a second look under the talented Kevin Brogan.
