Newbury 12.10

I thought STAGE STAR was really impressive on hurdles debut at Chepstow last month and given the third Young Butler has won in the style of a lovely prospect since I think he can make it 2-2 here. He was briefly challenged but drew away again and was well on top at the line. This is competitive but he is only going to improve and hopefully he can win this before being targeted at bigger prizes.

Nicky Henderson thinks a fair bit of Kincardine but he has just a bumper win to his name and has been wrapped in cotton wool since. I’ll be surprised if he is good enough to beat the selection on debut over hurdles. Bumpy Johnson was a good second last time but that form has already been let down since.

Stage Star 8/11

Newbury 12.40

Only the 4 going to post for this but it looks a cracker with all 4 in with a good chance of landing this. MILLERS BANK gets a narrow vote after running out an 11 length winner on chase debut. If his hurdling form is anything to go by he could make a top chaser after finishing last season with a third in the Aintree Hurdle behind Abacadabras and Buzz. He is an exciting chasing prospect and should go very well here.

All 3 of the others are dangers but Nassalam is the biggest threat after beating Solo who runs later on the card on chase debut. He is only 4 so will have plenty to come but the selection has better form in the book so far but his form with Adagio isn’t far behind.

Newbury 12.40

Millers Bank 15/8

Newbury 1.15 (this is the first race live on ITV Racing)

All eyes will be on JONBON in the ITV opener at Newbury on Friday. This Walk In The Park gelding and full brother to Douvan cost £540,000 and arrives with a tall reputation. I think it’s safe to say the bookies took no chance installing him as the 2/7 favourite but the market has corrected itself since and 4/6 looks much more like it. This is certainly no easy task but if he takes to hurdling I see no reason why he can’t make a winning start.

Good Risk At All is a tough sort who at least has experience on side after finishing second at Chepstow. If he builds on that he should make a race of it but is coming up against potentially a smart sort here. Boombawn is open to further improvement and also has to be noted.

Newbury 1.50

Like the earlier novice chase on the card this is so competitive with plenty in with chances. SOLO ties in nicely with Nassalam who runs in the 12.40 so we will know how good the form is but I suspect it is good. He disappointed over hurdles in his second season and looks a lot better over fences. He only got a 4lb rise for finishing second and I suspect he has more to come with later season targets in mind.

Boothill is the least exposed in here and rates the biggest danger. He put two great runs over hurdles together with a win and a good third at Ascot. They obviously saw him as a chaser all along and he is primed to run a big race here. Of the rest Mister Coffey is exciting to see over fences and should be in the mix if fully fit whilst Fifty Ball started his season off behind Minella Trump and should come on from that.

Newbury 2.25

It’s quite a tricky days racing on Friday so I’ve decided to take a chance on FANION D’ESTRUVAL at Newbury. After losing his place at Aintree last month he rallied strongly and was staying on well again at the finish. He went down just 4 lengths at the line and given the form has been strongly franked since with the second chasing home Bravemansgame at Haydock and the third Midnight Shadow winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham he has obvious claims coming into this.

Eritage and Colorado Doc should put good pace to the race and if he gets a good target to aim at I think that will suit rather than a tactical affair. Phoenix Way still has potential and looks the danger.

Newbury 3.00

We thought PAISLEY PARK would win on seasonal reappearance but he looked as though he needed it and was beaten by the re-opposing Indefatigable who really stepped forward for that run. Paisley Park should come on a lot for the run and gives less weight to his rival here and I expect him to be back to near his best.

Indefatigable is still a big danger but she had the luxury of a prep run on the Flat for the last race which clearly helped. She likely has plenty to come but if we see the real Paisley it will be much tougher. Mrs Milner won easily at the Festival and started the season with a good win in a mares event. She will be a threat all season if as good as she was at the Festival.

Newbury 3.35

Another fiercely competitive handicap to close and I’ve decided to take two against the field. ONE FOR YOU won his first two starts in handicaps and shaped with promise again when third to Stoney Mountain on return over C&D. He will come on for that run and looks to have a big shout of getting competitive here for Philip Hobbs. A mark of 123 looks well within range so I think he is primed to go close.

At a bigger price I thought THE COB could go well. He won 3 from 5 last season and while he was below form when down the field in the Albert Bartlett I’m happy to forgive that run and he remains open to further improvement. Dangers include Eyeofthescorpion who is turning into a bit of a gamble for Fergal O’Brien and Saint Sonnet who should strip fitter for his return with the blinkers applied.
