NAP – Best selection of the evening
Catterick 4.15 Nocte Volatus (1/1)
Improving fast over fences judging by the way he powered clear to win impressively at Doncaster last month; connections send him back over hurdles here to try and exploit his lower handicap mark; the one to beat.
The progressive NOCTE VOLATUS is arguably unlucky not to have bagged a hat-trick over fences but he was quickly back on track winning easily at Doncaster last month. He goes back hurdling here off a much lower mark and is expected to take all the beating again. He will be ridden forward and will look to dictate from flag-fall. The danger is Shoughall’s Boy who has won his last two and even up another 5lb should be capable of giving the selection a race. Hard to see many of the others featuring but I guess Hartland Quay has to be considered in terms of a place after finishing fourth at Exeter. Old Jewry won twice last year but has been out of form recently and has enough to prove on the balance.
NB – Second best selection of the day
THE NEXT BEST (SECOND BEST BET) WON YESTERDAY AND RUNS AT NEWCASTLE!
Newcastle 4.10 Dragons Will Rise (6/4)
Progressive sort who has won 4 of his last 6 starts and he clocked a career best over C&D last month, finding plenty; if he tuns up in the same form then he should take all the beating again; should get a good pace to run down.
Micky Hammond has got the best out of DRAGONS WILL RISE and he doesn’t look finished yet. He is clearly thriving judging by that career best over C&D last time and a similar performance here should be good enough. He has won 7 of his last 11 starts so that is an impressive strike rate. He is up 6lb but looks to relish this track and trip and I’m keen to keep him on side. The danger is likely Hooflepuff who wasn’t disgraced when third to Mummy’s Boy at Wolverhampton last month. I know the winner has failed to back up that form since but he should still give the favourite something to think about. El Picador capitalised on an easing mark at Hamilton in May but needs more here on return.
