Promising mare who impressed winning at Newbury and then found all bar subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner Love Envoi too strong at Sandown in testing ground; opening mark potentially lenient so sure to go well.

Langer Dan will likely prove popular here given he was brought down at just the second hurdle in the Martin Pipe but favourites have a pretty shocking record in this and there is certainly no juice in his price now. I’m going to take a chance on SPEECH BUBBLE for Noel Williams. This likeable mare ran out an impressive winner at Newbury back in January despite racing keenly throughout. She backed that up finding all bar subsequent Cheltenham winner Love Envoi too strong at Sandown. With further improvement to come now tackling handicap company she looks way too big in the betting at 8/1.

Given there are 22 heading to post I’m also going to have an each way saver on FILS D’OUDAIRIES following that encouraging run at Ascot last time. I thought he was a big eye-catcher that day finding just Unexpected Party too good and put away since this has likely been the target. This track should suit and I’m surprised he is as big as 12/1 at the time of writing as I can’t have him out the frame. Dangers include the fav as mentioned, Cobblers Dream who has been in great form and at a bigger price Garry Clermont could go well back on better ground.

Aintree 2.20 Jonbon (best price 5/4) NAP

Progressive hurdler who found all bar stablemate Constitution Hill too strong in the Supreme at Cheltenham last month; hard to oppose off the back of that with the promise of more to come yet; should win.

There are a few useful sorts in here but it doesn’t look a deep race for a Grade 1 and JONBON has an ideal opportunity to bounce back from his first defeat (second in the Supreme). He was beaten by a potential superstar in Constitution Hill at Cheltenham and there doesn’t look like anything close to him in here. He has taken two Grade 2s already this season and if feeling no ill-effects from Cheltenham last month should win this.

There are two in here that could give him something to think about. El Fabiolo won a maiden with ease and could have plenty more to come but obviously this is a big step up and First Street who has been running really well in top handicaps including the Betfair Hurdle and deserves to take his chance against his stablemate.

Aintree 2.55 Bravemansgame (best price 6/4)

Looked a natural over fences giving weight and a beating when last seen at Newbury back in February; swerved Cheltenham once the ground became attritional; comes here fresh and could serve it up to these.

I’m sticking with BRAVEMANSGAME here. I think it was the right decision to pull him out at Cheltenham once the ground became saturated and Nicholls has already admitted they are thinking about the long-term picture with this horse. He thinks he could be a Gold Cup horse in time so this is set to be a fascinating clash with L’Homme Presse. The latter was so impressive at Cheltenham but on this quicker surface and flatter track it might be tougher for him to repeat that. If the selection gets jumping and into a rhythm he may well serve it up to them.

It’s not just a two-horse race though as Ahoy Senor ties in closely with both the market principals. He ran huge at Cheltenham given some of the mistakes he made and if he can cut them out then he would be a danger in here too. He is clearly a very promising horse himself and that makes for this to be a fascinating clash. We could see these fighting it out with each other for years to come!

Aintree 3.30 Fakir D’Oudairies (best price 6/4)

Likeable sort who won this impressively by 11 lengths last year and has looked as good as ever this campaign winning the Ascot Chase when last seen in February, jumping well; clearly the one to beat again.

This race usually pays to favour those at the top of the market and even though it does look a deep race I feel it is between FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES and Funambule Sivola. The former won this easily last year and arrives fresh after avoiding another beating by Allaho at Cheltenham and it should pay dividends here. He is ultra consistent and if in the same form as last year will win this.

Funambule Sivola is the main danger after a good second behind Energumene in the Champion Chase. He is interesting up in trip again and could show that the Cheltneham run was no fluke (race fell apart in-running). Allmankind was saved for this so could go well if bouncing back to form.

Aintree 4.05 Palmers Hill (best price 20/1)

Lightly raced sort who looked progressive winning back-to-back races over fences most notably when powering clear at Ascot in December; not in the same form when last seen in January; freshened up and could bounce back.

Aintree 4.05 Killer Clown (best price 20/1) LONGSHOT

Bounced back to his best thrashing the opposition at Wincanton back in January; disappointed at Ascot but had excuses and then back to form again winning by 8 lengths at Kempton; no surprise to see him go close.

A warm up for the main event! It won’t surprise you that I’ve taken 3 against the field here (and I’m going to have 4 in the Grand National itself tomorrow). This is wide open as you’d expect. 8/1 bar the field at the time of writing and I’ve tried to oppose the top of the market. One of my best plays is PALMERS HILL for Jonjo O’Neill. I still think a lot of this horse and for a 9yo he still remains lightly raced, especially over fences (had just the 4 starts). He was impressive at Ascot on penultimate start and if you forgive him that run last time he could still be well handicapped off a mark of 142.

My second play in the Topham is KILLER CLOWN for Emma Lavelle. He has been a bit hit and miss but when he is on his game he is very talented and he showed that when back to form at Kempton last month. He has gone up 8lb from that but I still think he has untapped potential and if he takes to these unique fences he could be a danger to all. Finally I’ve also included COBOLOBO at a monster price. This 10yo ran a cracker when denied just a nose at Ascot on penultimate start and if he gets into a rhythm he is dangerous. He finds plenty and I just think at 66/1 down 3lb from that last run he might have a squeak.

Aintree 4.40 Gelino Bello (best price 6/1) each way

Well regarded sort who bumped into Blazing Khal a couple of times at Cheltenham before running well to finish fourth in the Lanzarote; won as he should have at Newbury last month; spot on for this and big run beckons.

This race has been won by some stars in the past but this doesn’t look like a vintage renewal and I am going to have two in this at nice prices. GELINO BELLO has form over 3 miles in the book behind Blazing Khal who would be top rated in the field if running here. He won nicely at Newbury last time and it should set him up perfectly for this. He has conditions to suit and I expect him to run a big race.

The other I think will have conditions to suit and might be overpriced is GREEN BOOK who ran on in fifth in the Albert Bartlett despite losing 2 shoes and he could be a different horse here on decent ground over a trip that he runs well over. Banbridge is the favourite after winning the Martin Pipe at the Festival and should go well if seeing the 3 miles out but I do prefer my two at bigger prices with stamina guaranteed. Skystastic is 4/4 under rules but may lack the experience needed to win this.

Smart in bumpers and looked useful over hurdles so far getting back to winning ways at Southwell a month ago, quickening away; remains unexposed and mark could prove lenient back in a handicap now; keep on side.

It was a tough day for Olly Murphy yesterday with a couple of fancied horses including our Value Tip well beaten but he might be back smiling on Friday in the lucky last with WASHINGTON. This son of Westerner remains unexposed and it was good to see him back in the winners enclosure at Southwell last month. I know he was entitled to back in novice company but he quickened up impressively and left them standing in the closing stages. He goes back handicapping now off what looks a good mark and with Fergus Gregory keeping the ride I think he is set to go close. There is potential for a lot of pace on here and this big field should help him settle.

Quite a few dangers including Richmond Lake who fell when last seen but retains potential and at a bigger price Just The Man might run well off the back of a convincing win at Ludlow last month where the third has franked the form since.
