Catterick 1.40 Val De Travers (11/10)

Tanked through the race pulling fiercely before going clear and keeping up the gallop at Nottingham last week; given he still won despite doing plenty wrong a penalty shouldn’t be enough to stop him following up here.

I know it’s at a fairly lowly level but I couldn’t help but be taken with VAL DE TRAVERS at Nottingham last week. That was his first start for Mick Appleby and it was a career best on the figures. He is only going to improve given that was his first start for 172 days and I make him a strong play here despite him clearly being a fairly quirky individual. Hopefully Theodore Ladd can get some cover here as if he can drop his head early he could be capable of even better. Mokaman has won over track and trip and might emerge as the main danger to the favourite. Bluella wasn’t disgraced a fortnight ago and is unlikely to be far away again. Jungle Inthebungle might also be involved for a place if better positioned.

Improved from his hurdles form to make a winning start over fences at Doncaster last month, jumping really well; 8lb rise more than fair and capable of better again so good chance to go and follow up; keep on side.

I thought there was lots to like about the way LAKOTA WARRIOR jumped and galloped on chase debut at Doncaster last month. He found more than enough to pull clear from a decent yardstick late on and was value for even more than the 8-length victory. He is up 8lb but that looks perfect fair to me and I think he is the one to beat again here. Shantou Lucky opened his account at Clonmel but the handicapper has handed him a stiff enough opening mark of 122 so he might struggle off that even with more to come. Uncle Alastair is consistent and has to be respected on recent form but I think the selection might have him covered. Ubetya and Torigni both look to have enough to prove at present.
