Chester 1.30

The Boodles May Festival gets underway at Chester with the Lily Agnes and it looks a decent renewal. I’m keen on Havana Grey filly STAR OF LADY M remaining unbeaten for the red-hot David O’Meara. She made a perfect start winning on debut at Redcar showing a professional attitude to get on top in the closing stages. She backed that up impressively at Ripon travelling strongly on the lead before finding more than enough. This is obviously tougher again but she has a great draw and I think she’ll go forward and prove too classy for these.

Ocean Cloud is also 2-2 for Gay Kelleway and if she can transfer that form to turf she could emerge as the danger. I have slight concerns though so it wouldn’t surprise me if Absolutelyflawless was the one to chase the favourite home. This Ribchester filly won on debut and looks to have plenty of potential as well.

Newton Abbot 1.50

Rouge Vif is favourite here but I wouldn’t want to be taking a short price about him as he has looked gone at the game for a while now. He was tailed off at Sandown behind Greaneteen and has enough to prove. Obviously he is down in grade but he isn’t a happy horse right now. I like the chances of ERITAGE from the same stable. This step back up in trip will suit and freshened up he should go well in a first-time tongue-tie.

Falco Blitz was pulled up when last seen and has a bit to prove so I think Goa Lil could be the danger under 3lb Jordan Nailor. He wears his heart on his sleeve and should give his running which might see him keep the selection honest.

Chester 2.05

Whilst I think the favourite has a solid chance I am going to take him on with NYMPHADORA at a bigger price. Andrew Balding’s filly finished last season running in some nice races with credit and she kicks the season off in calmer water here. She has a great draw in 1 and will make a bold bid from the front end under Jason Watson.

Live In the Dream is clearly improving and will be race fit for this. The reason for opposing him today was his 8lb rise at the weights plus he doesn’t have a 5lb claimer on here. He will go well from stall 2 but has to improve again.

Chester 2.40

The well bred ABOVE THE CURVE looks a lovely prospect and I think she can build on that Leopardstown win to take the Cheshire Oaks here. She was impressive last time and was firmly in command at the line. This step up in trip can bring about further improvement and I’m confident she is the one to beat for Joseph O’Brien.

Night Battle is by Kingman and she impressed to make a winning start on debut. She will know a lot more this time around and should run well enough to keep the favourite honest. Golden Horn filly Hello Jumeirah won on debut under just hands and heels and could also go well if building on that. Thoughts Of June is held by the selection and will need to find more somehow.

Chester 3.10

Despite the small field it has attracted a couple of horses that could easily end up in the Derby next month. CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD looks to have improved plenty from 2 to 3. That combined with the step up in trip last time produced an emphatic performance. He ran out a 6 length winner and I expect more to come over this longer trip.

New London is the hot favourite for the race after winning nicely on his comeback run at Newmarket last month and took his unbeaten record to 2 wins from 2 runs. I don’t doubt he is a good horse but the disparity in price between two improving horses makes me favour the selection.

Chester 3.40

Given the way POCKET THE PROFIT finished at Newmarket last month I still think he is improving. He was held up in rear and perhaps just found it a bit tougher to get involved under the penalty but once he found his stride he really picked up and was only beaten a length and a half at the line. He didn’t really have anything to take him into the race and I still think he has potential off his current mark. He has a wide enough stall but given he is likely to be settled early before looking to pounce late it might actually suit as he won’t get crowded up the inside like they can. This tight track might be just what he wants as he needs to track a good gallop and use that burst in one go.

Ever Given is a smart colt and he is the right favourite but at 11/2 I think the selection looks a good price to spring the upset. Of the rest Auditor still has more to come and has to be respected too but he is drawn as wide as you can get here.
