Royal Ascot 2.30 Norfolk Stakes

This looks a decent renewal of the Norfolk Stakes and Walbank has been all the rage for David Loughnane. He bumped into Noble Style on debut before bolting up at York last month. He is clearly very talented but at 2/1 I think he is opposable with how much strength in depth this looks to have. I prefer THE ANTARCTIC for Aidan O’Brien. The yard got on the board yesterday with Little Big Bear and I think confidence will be high heading into today. This Dark Angel colt who is a full brother to Battaash is unbeaten having gone 2-2 in Ireland and while you can pick holes in his form he almost certainly will be better suited by this truer test and I’m expecting a big performance. He is drawn high too which has been a positive in recent years.

Given the make-up of the race I’ve also had an each way saver on CRISPY CAT at 12/1. This promising colt made a winning start before bumping into Blackbeard over in Ireland and then found just Maria Branwell too strong at Sandown. Both of them form lines have worked out well since and he gives the impression there is more to come if the race pans out favourably for him. Others to note include Brave Nation who impressed at Doncaster and Bakeel who won over C&D on debut.

Royal Ascot 3.05 King George V Stakes

A maximum field of 19 set to go to post and it looks like a race to have a couple of bets in. POST IMPRESSIONIST looks a worthy favourite under Danny Tudhope who is flying at Ascot this week. His form behind Eldar Eldarov looks even better after his win yesterday and I think like him this horse will improve for the extra few furlongs. I’ll be amazed if he isn’t a fair bit ahead of his mark and I guess the only downside is his price as he has been heavily supported since yesterday. He will be staying on strongly and he has to be my main play in the race.

At a bigger price SAVVY KNIGHT looks good value going for 4 wins from 4 starts. He has won all his races by just doing enough so there is likely plenty to come and deserves to take his chance here. The only negative for him would be the draw given he is in 6 but at 33’s or so it’s worth chancing. The dangers are there for all to see with Newfoundland and State Secret looking like the main threats. The latter impressed at Nottingham last time to make it 2 wins from 3 starts and the second Laasudood has franked the form since winning next time out.

Royal Ascot 3.40 Ribblesdale Stakes

I can see this step up in trip really suiting Dubawi filly LIFE OF DREAMS for Godolphin. She was heavily supported on debut where she won in quite taking style at Newbury and then improved bumping into subsequent Oaks second Emily Upjohn in the Musidora at York last month. She stayed on well but never had a chance with the winner but we know she is very smart so it looks good form.

Sea Silk Road has won her last two and impressed with how she saw it out at Goodwood last month. She looks the obvious danger with more to come over this trip but she has been well found in the betting. Magical Lagoon was chinned by Concert Hall at Navan and that filly acquitted herself well to finish fourth in the Oaks behind Tuesday. She is another one with potential over this new trip but might just find a couple too strong.

Royal Ascot 4.20 Gold Cup (Group 1) 2m4f

It is a shame Trueshan likely won’t run in this due the ground despite being left in as I think he is the best in the race but needs ease in the ground. Kyprios is favourite at the time of writing but I think he could set it up for STRADIVARIUS. John Gosden’s star stayer found trouble in-running last year and Subjectivist was away and gone. I would imagine we will have 9 runners or less this year and he could make it 4 wins in the race here under Frankie Dettori.

Kyprios is stepping up in trip and whilst he will be a danger he has to prove that he is better at this distance. Princess Zoe was second last year and could run a place again having had confidence boosted winning the Sagaro here back in April. That form has obviously been advertised too with Quickthorn going in at Sandown next time so there are worse each way plays in the race.

Royal Ascot 5.00 Britannia Stakes

I’ve backed 3 in the Britannia this year with the shortest of them WHOPUTFIFTYINYOU for Clive Cox. This Twilight Son colt is a perfect 4-4 and he really impressed winning the Silver Bowl at Haydock last month. That form has worked out notably well since with the third Outgate bolting up at Chester next time out and the second Mighty Ulysses getting within three-quarters of a length of Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday. He is up 10lb from that but deservedly so and I can see this test really suiting given how strong he has looked at the finish on all starts. He definitely has more to come yet.

My second play in the race at what looks a really nice each way price is ATRIUM for Charlie Fellowes. He caught my eye running on strongly having been slowly away at Musselburgh and built on that to win like a smart prospect over C&D travelling strongly and doing it easily with the money down. He is up 7lb but the second has won since so the form has substance. At a huge price I also thought it was worth including BOLTHOLE for Michael Bell. He shaped well on return at Sandown and confirmed that promise overcoming a pace bias to win at Newmarket last month. I can see him travelling strongly back down to a mile here and if they go hard he could surprise a few.

Royal Ascot 5.35 Hampton Court Stakes

A really small field for the Hampton Court Stakes and a great opportunity for a Royal winner with REACH FOR THE MOON being the standout in here. He was beaten on his seasonal reappearance by My Prospero who was third in the St James’s Palace behind Coroebus and Lusail on Tuesday so the form looks solid. He is by Sea The Stars so the step up to this trip seems logical and he will take some beating with a run under his belt.

Maksud and Claymore look the dangers representing some good form and both have scope for improvement but I think this will be an uphill task trying to overhaul this favourite who clearly has plenty going for him. Howth is better than he showed at Leopardstown and is another one I’m interested to see how he goes with an eye to the future.

Royal Ascot 6.10 Buckingham Palace Stakes

29 head to post for the Buckingham Palace Stakes and the lucky last on Thursday. I’m looking forward to seeing MONTASSIB out again following his impressive win at Goodwood last month. They were worried about the softer ground for him that day but he handled it well and was an easy winner. He is back on a firm surface here which will likely suit better and he looks a really progressive horse now. He is up 10lb but could potentially be a cut above these. He is by Exceed and Excel and that sire has a good record at this track and they love fast conditions so plenty of boxes ticked.

With so many runners I’m including a couple at bigger odds too. TANMAWWY has won 3 from 4 for Charlie Hills and he shaped as though he’d improve again for the step back up to 7f here given the way he ran on to get up late on at Doncaster last time. He is up 5lb but looks a decent price to me at around 14/1. My final play in the race is STAR OF ORION for Ralph Beckett who caught the eye finishing eighth in the Victoria Cup on return last month. He is down a couple of pounds and won second-up last season so should be spot on for this now. Others to note include Silent Film and Inver Park.
