Chelmsford – race-by-race preview

Six races to get stuck into at Chelmsford today. It’s the only meeting that’s survived after Punchestown was abandoned due to heavy snow. We do have Newcastle to come tonight too and I will be doing another preview for that as well.

Chelmsford 1.35 toteplacepot First Bet Of The Day Classified Stakes (Class 6) 6f – 9 declared to run

We kicked off the week yesterday with a winning NAP and we’ll be hoping for similar fortune here with our Notebook KRAZY PAVING. He showed a good attitude to prevail over C&D 4 days ago and looks capable of defying a penalty. I think it’s between him and Watheer as the market is suggesting so fingers crossed we’re on the right one. The Notebook has been in great form and we had a 4/1 winner yesterday in Finnegan’s Garden. Indian Affair chased home Englishman when last seen and is another to consider.

A lot like Beautiful Illusion yesterday the market support could prove telling here for debutant SANSEVERO. He was as big as 9/2 when the market opened but has proved all the rage since. He was a relatively cheap purchase €40,000 given he is a half-brother to several winners including Noble Prospector and The Daley Express. His dam was a 2yo 5f winner so he could be a forward type which would probably be why he is being so well supported. That coupled with the fact Archie Watson does well with newcomers he could prove too good for these. Night Voyager has experience on side and is sure to improve so rates the biggest danger.

Make no mistake Elusif will be extremely hard to beat here but at the prices I just thought it might be worth putting up an each way selection against. The one that made most appeal was DOUBLE REFLECTION for Mick Appleby. She comes out well on the figures and at 9/1 might be value to run into a place. She is on a lengthy losing streak but did shape well when fifth at Kempton last time beaten just two lengths. She is too well handicapped to ignore off this mark so you’d be foolish to rule out an improved effort. The fav is the most likely winner but Double Martini is another to consider albeit he was rather disappointing last time.

Chelmsford 3.15 Ministry Of Sound And Light Extravaganza Handicap (Class 5) 1m2f – 6 declared to run

Prince Of Eagles is a short priced favourite here following his comfortable win at Lingfield last time but the handicapper has given him a mark of 77 and that looks a bit harsh to me. He might be worth opposing at a short price and EVENTFUL is a filly capable of better. She was held up on debut for Mick Quinn and just started to get involved when hampered and couldn’t quicken after. While I’m not saying she would have won she would have got closer and a mark of 73 probably underestimates her true ability. At around 5/1 she looks worth chancing. Cottonopolis is another to consider after going close over this trip last time.

We made TONE THE BARONE our NAP back from wind surgery and a 172-day absence over C&D 4 days ago and he didn’t disappoint. Hayley Turner bagged a good position on him and he ran on readily to win by 6 lengths at the line. This looks a penalty kick and the market is certainly suggesting that. He actually opened up around 5/4 apparently but was quickly backed in and the support hasn’t relented all day. He should win! If the price is too short then Moveonup without the favourite might be worth backing as he is another horse on the up and comes out well on speed figures.

Tone The Barone 8/13 (Mega Acca)

With Social City out this looks a good opportunity for ESTRELA STAR to follow up for Ali Stronge. He won impressively last time and looks up to defying a 5lb penalty turned out quickly. Contingency Fee should put the pace to the race and I expect Kieran O’Neill to be in the box seat given he stays further. Grandscape ran well when fourth at Lingfield and is probably the main danger but Muraaqeb is also respected given he’s a four-time C&D winner. At the bigger prices Mr Fox might be a bit of value to hit the frame.

Estrela Star 7/4 (Next Best)
