Newmarket 1.50 Palace House Stakes (Group 3) (5f)

Blink and you’ll miss it! A typical fiercely competitive renewal of the Palace House Stakes to kick the action off live on ITV from Newmarket and we’ve taken two against the field (both each way). FAR ABOVE is an exciting colt for James Tate having won three of his four starts and while he’ll need to step up again to take this I’ve got to have him on side. You need luck in this race so hopefully he gets the gaps as I think he’ll be flying at the finish under PJ McDonald.

QUEENS GIFT was the other horse that caught the eye. She is a tough, consistent sort who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. She landed back-to-back handicaps prior to finishing second to Judicial in a Listed race at Beverley and then pushing Equilateral within a head at Doncaster. She deserves a crack at this on return and at double-figure odds has to be included. Others to note include Moss Gill, who can find trouble, and at a bigger price Tarboosh, who is undoubtedly talented but a bit tricky to ride.

Newcastle 2.05 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap (7f14y)

This looks a wide open handicap and a chance is taken with ALJARI at a price who is pretty consistent on the AW and I can see Marco Botti’s colt having more to come in handicaps. He won nicely enough without the easiest of trips at Southwell and with the pace looking strong this should be run perfectly for him to come late.

The obvious danger is the favourite Daarik who could be better than most of these down the line but he gives our selection 5lb and that makes him appealing at a bigger price.

Newmarket 2.25 Dahlia Fillies’ Stakes (Group 2) (1m2f)

Sticking with the lightly raced TEREBELLUM here for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. This daughter of Sea The Stars won a French Group 2 before finishing a close-up fifth in the Prix de l’Opera. She is open to plenty of improvement now and could be the most progressive in the line-up. Godolphin also have Magic Lily in here but she has been kept busy over the winter in Dubai and this looks a bit of an afterthought to me. She has plenty of ability but I think the selection is their main hope.

Queen Power is a danger. She was a filly I had on my radar after going down narrowly to Muchly at Ascot. She got back to winning ways in a Listed race at Newbury, one that has worked out notably well since, but then was put in her place up in trip at Ascot. She was too keen when last seen at Windsor and I think she needs more to trouble the favourite. Definitely talented but this might not be run to suit.

Newcastle 2.40 Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (2m56y)

The race of the day at Newcastle the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes looks ultra competitive (9/2 the field at the time of writing) but I do like ISPOLINI in this. Charlie Appleby’s well travelled 5yo has good form behind top stayers in Cross Counter and Stradivarius. On that he should be bang there at a fair price.

There are a few dangers but the standouts would be Melbourne Cup runner-up Prince Of Arran and Royal Line who have both shown a touch of class.

Newmarket 3.00 Betfair Exchange Free Bet Streak Newmarket Stakes (Listed) (1m2f)

There is so much great racing on Saturday but I can’t wait to see WALDKONIG again for John Gosden. This 600,000 guineas half-brother to Arc hero Waldgeist created a deep and lasting impression on debut routing rivals by 9 lengths at the line. He is as low as 9/1 for the Derby off the back of that sole effort and falls into the ‘could be anything’ category. This son of Kingman looks sure to improve and I think he’ll brush this field aside with ease.

A danger if there is one would probably be Punctuation for Andrew Balding. The yard have started the season with all guns blazing and this Dansili colt won impressively at Kempton just over 3 months ago. Hard to know what he beat but he brings potential to the table. The likelihood is though he’ll just be bumping into one.

Newcastle 3.15 Betway Heed Your Hunch Handicap (1m)

This race looks a little more clear cut but unfortunately there isn’t any value in this one. PALACE PIER was near the top of the market for the 2000 Guineas and an injury has made John Gosden ease him back in instead of going for the classic. He should be far better than this level with plenty to come.

If betting on one without the favourite I would go with Acquitted who also looks like a having more to come and could win a few more races for Hugo Palmer’s yard.

Newmarket 3.35 2000 Guineas (Group 1) (1m)

The race undoubtedly revolves around PINATUBO for Charlie Appleby. This colt has looked unstoppable winning all 6 starts and for me I find him impossible to oppose. The way he blitzed them at the Curragh with Buick grinning through his teeth was truly breathtaking. He capped off a remarkable season with a two-length win in the Dewhurst and while it wasn’t as sparkling as his last performance it showed he can do it both ways. I think whatever they try to do to beat him he will find a way and he is just all class. He has to be my selection.

In terms of a danger I’m quite confident MILITARY MARCH is going to run a big race for Saeed bin Suroor. This colt by New Approach made a big impression on me with how he won last time and he comes into the race unbeaten and a bit of a dark horse. He was still learning on the job when last seen and overcame inexperience to win in good style in the end. He has plenty more to come I think and while he’ll need a big step up to put up any resistance to the fav I think he can and he is value to hit the frame at 16/1! Others to note include Kameko who sprung an upset in the Futurity and of course Arizona who has reportedly been flying at home and did push the favourite closest here last time.
