Doncaster 1.15 Sky Sport Racing HD Virgin 535 Handicap (Str) (Class 2) 1m

The opening race of the day and a horse we have been waiting to run again after being disqualified last time out. MATTHEW FLINDERS ran such a big race at Sandown when down to the mile trip and he could be tough to beat if Marquand can keep a lid on him early. He has already won at Doncaster and still has plenty to come.

The main danger looks to be the consistent Aweedram who has gone close on his last two runs and could be thereabouts again for his new yard. Magical Morning will likely prove popular for Gosden and Dettori but he has a bit to prove after heavy defeats at Newmarket and Goodwood.

Doncaster 1.50 bet365 Champagne Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 1) 7f

This looks a cracking renewal and it’s been won by some useful types down the years. Richard Hannon took it last year with Threat and he has the promising CHINDIT this year. There was good word around for this colt on debut and he duly justified favouritism winning over C&D in July. He built on that improving markedly to win a Listed race at Ascot last time and the form of that race has worked out well since. He still didn’t look the finished article so there should be plenty more to come. He is a sizeable colt so he could have a bit of filling out to do yet. As long as this sort of test doesn’t come too soon he is the most likely winner for me.

Mujbar left his debut run well behind when impressing at Newmarket last time. He has a bit of ground to make up on the selection but is worth a crack at this level off the back of that and could be the one to put up the biggest challenge to the selection. Albasheer saw off a subsequent winner over C&D on debut and also has to come into the reckoning but he lacks experience and may find this coming too soon.

Chester 2.05 #ChesterRaces Supports The Injured Jockeys Fund Stand Cup Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) 1m41/2f

I was at Chester that day Morando left Kew Gardens standing still. It was a very good performance and showed he clearly enjoyed going around this tight track. It was awful weather though and the ground was soft so he will have different conditions here. The drying ground is what has ultimately tipped my vote towards ALIGNAK here. He is a lightly raced colt who has looked better than ever this term winning on return at Newcastle before going down a short head at Haydock and then chasing home the exciting Hukum at Newbury. He’ll need to step forward again but I think he can and with conditions against Morando he is a confident selection to come out on top.

Universal Order certainly isn’t discounted lightly as he is back to his optimum trip. Hereby likes it here and wasn’t disgraced last month so should go down fighting too. It’s an intriguing race that should have a good finish.

Doncaster 2.25 bet365 Portland Handicap (Class 2) 51/2f

A massive field as usual for the Portland Handicap and it is a race I have to have a couple of bets in. The stats say mid-high draws fair better but the main bulk of the pace is low so I will side with middle draws. My fist pick is ARECIBO who is very consistent and gets to run off 6lb lower than he ran in this race last year. He ran a good fourth that day and if breaking on terms he will be coming home fast and late.

The other pick is the 2018 winner of this race A MOMENTOFMADNESS who nearly won it again last year but was beaten by the classy Oxted who has gone on to bigger and better things. He is now off a mark of 91 and looks very well handicapped if in the same sort of form. His latest effort suggests he could be ready for another big run in this.

Chester 2.40 Racing Together How Sport Helps Others Handicap (Class 2) 1m21/2f

Maydanny was my initial selection in this race but he has been taken out now and was the pace angle. Restorer and Lawn Ranger are likely to push forward now and the one I can see getting a nice toe into it is BE MORE for Andrew Balding. I know she was expected to do better at Goodwood last time but that was a strong handicap for the grade and this track will suit her better. She has run here once and won so could be up to making it 2-2. Tactics could prove crucial and hopefully Rob Hornby will build up that turn of foot for one burst to pick them up.

Prejudice has finished second the last twice and was only denied a short head at Newcastle last month. He looks the biggest danger coming into this but I’m not certain this track will play to his strengths and the likelihood is he will have to come from an unpromising position.

Doncaster 3.00 bet365 Park Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) 7f

It was great to see LIMATO back near his best in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket on his reappearance and given he ran out an impressive winner of this race back in 2015 he could still have it in him to run a big race. The bookies are clearly taking no chances installing him as the favourite but with the opposition lacking quality he looks set to go close. Conditions look ideal and bar his advancing years he is hard to pick holes in. Marie’s Diamond, Shine So Bright and Breathtaking Look should go hard up front and that is exactly what he needs to be seen to best effect in the closing stages.

One Master did well to win at Goodwood and was never really going at York last time but did keep on into second behind Safe Voyage. Should run her race again but the drying ground would have to be against her. Wichita has failed to reach the heights she first promised and needs to bounce back but would be a danger if doing so.

Leopardstown 3.10 Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies & Mares) (Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race) 1m

One of the feature races of the day in Ireland and two of Ballydoyle’s top horses go head-to-head again. Peaceful has beaten FANCY BLUE previously but the latter has improved since the Irish Guineas and had the former trailing in third when winning the Prix de Diane in France. She backed that up winning the Nassau at Goodwood last time and the step back down to a mile shouldn’t be an issue. I’m expecting her to be tough to beat again.

Peaceful is obviously a big threat to the selection again but even dropping back to this trip I can’t see her reversing the form as the favourite looks to have improved past her. Albigna is yet to match what she achieved as a 2yo and while the yard remain confident in her ability and the market keeps backing that up I think she could become expensive to follow and I can’t have her on my mind for this. Know It All seems a bit fragile but clearly has ability so has to be respected.

Doncaster 3.35 Pertemps St Leger Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (Class 1) 1m61/2f

This years’ St Leger looks a cracker with plenty in with a chance. Pyledriver has been a revelation for connections and was impressive again in the Great Voltigeur. He will be a big player if seeing out the trip but I am siding with the guaranteed stamina of SANTIAGO. He showed a great attitude to tough out the Irish Derby and his latest run behind Stradivarius is obviously great form. If he reproduces that sort of level again he looks sure to go close under Frankie Dettori. It could become a real battle in the closing stages and he is one I want to keep firmly on side.

Pyledriver is all class as mentioned and will be the main danger along with Galileo Chrome who has impressed in his 3 wins and I expect another big run from him. Hukum has the sexy, unexposed profile coming into this and did look very good winning the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury last time. He is clearly going the right way but this is another step up so he needs to prove he’s ready for this test. Could still be anything though and adds another fascinating angle to an intriguing renewal.

Doncaster 4.05 Matthew Clark Nursery (Str) (Class 2) 1m

This is a good race and you can make a strong case for three or four of these. LEGEND OF DUBAI is the one I’ve come down on for Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni. This colt by Dubawi looked to need the experience when third to Guru and Maximal (won yesterday) on debut at Newbury and improved to finish second to River Alwen at Haydock last time. The latter was strongly punted for that race and had everything go his way. I just think the second was given too much to do as he was travelling so well within himself but needed to move closer sooner. He can step forward again and looks a danger to all.

Lone Eagle went into my notes after flashing home for second on debut at Sandown but he made hard work of it at Goodwood and while I still think he has a lot of potential the selection just looks more forward right now and ready for this sort of test. Hannon usually targets this race so Mark Of The Man can be expected to bounce back. Looked promising at Goodwood and the step up to a mile looks ideal. Probably the main danger to the selection.

Leopardstown 4.10 Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1) (Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race) 1m2f

Magical returns to defend her crown but goes up against the mighty GHAIYYATH again who brushed her aside easily at York and should take all the beating again. He has beaten Stradivarius, Enable and Magical this season already over this trip and I don’t think there is a horse in training that could beat him at 1 mile 2 furlongs. He should win again if he runs his usual race.

Magical is likely to chase him home again followed by Japan and Sottsass. At the prices it is worth just watching a very good horse run and most likely winning again. We’ll probably include him in our Mega Acca so keep an eye out for that.

Doncaster 5.15 Magners Dark Fruit Cider Handicap (Class 2) 1m4f

This is a race that never attracts a big field and only 5 go to post again today. Spanish Archer has already beaten AL MUFFRIH but I think that form will be reversed here. The latter is better off at the weights and has cheekpieces fitted for the first time which should bring on a bit more improvement. He has been given a bit of time between runs and will be tough to beat.

Obviously Spanish Archer is a danger but Mankayan could be more of a threat off of a mark of 90 for Charlie Fellowes. He won over C&D in July and has bumped into a couple of useful types the last twice.
