Melbourne Cup Betting Preview

The race that stops a nation overnight as the Melbourne Cup takes place from Flemington in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We have tipped the winner 3 times in the last 4 years. Check out our in-depth preview of this year’s renewal.

Given there are 24 runners going to post we have backed two against the field. We also mention one at a monster price that might be worth backing to hit the frame so make sure you read our preview below and scroll down if you want to add them to your bet slip.

Who are we backing for the Melbourne Cup?

ADD OUR MAIN MELBOURNE CUP SELECTION TO BET365 BET SLIP!

Always love setting the alarm for the Melbourne Cup! It’s a race I try and watch year in year out and it’s one we’ve had quite a bit of luck in down the years. We actually made it a hat-trick of winners in 2018 as Cross Counter swept home as we had previously tipped Almandin and Rekindling. Last year we had Il Paradiso and he didn’t get much luck in the run in a very tight finish. We’ve taken two against the field this year and our main selection in the race has to be SIR DRAGONET.

He is coming into this off a very convincing win in the Cox Plate last weekend and if this doesn’t come too soon he looks to have a major chance. Three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss keeps the ride and even though he is stepping up to 3200m for the first time he finished just three lengths off Logician in the St Leger over 2900m when trained by Aidan O’Brien and promises to stay the trip. He will look to get him settled early from barrier 14 and work his way into the race, hopefully finishing best of all. I can see him travelling strongly before splitting rivals. He only looked to be getting going in the closing stages in the Cox Plate so I have no issue with the trip.

Why are we having a saver in the Melbourne Cup?

ADD OUR EACH WAY SAVER SELECTION TO BET365 BET SLIP!

In a race as competitive as the Melbourne Cup it can pay to have a saver in the race and this year VERRY ELLEEGANT catches the eye for Chris Waller. She has emerged as the nation’s premier horse this spring winning three Group 1 races in four starts including her Caulfield Cup defeat of English Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck. She will carry 55.5kg in the Melbourne Cup and while that is a big ask (only mare to carry that sort of handicap and win was Makybe Diva) she strikes me as a potential star so she might just pull it off? I think at the odds she has to be included as she will be switched off early and produced late. You always need luck when coming through in a race like this but at 14/1 I think she represents good odds and will have you on the edge of your seat screaming her home!

Why it might be worth backing this horse to run into a place?

ADD OUR VALUE PLACE BET TO BET365 BET SLIP!

Now I’ve not backed this horse in the outright market (you may want to at 40/1) as I appreciate how competitive it is this year but at 10/1 for a place THE CHOSEN ONE is a bet worth taking. This 5yo surprised many when finishing third to Very Elleegant (my each way saver in the race) and Anthony Van Dyck in the Caulfield Cup and should appreciate getting back to the big track. I can see him running a big race and at the odds he is worth including.
