Newbury 12.10 Play Ladbrokes 5-A-Side On Football Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Listed Race) (Class 1) 2m1/2f

The money has certainly come for POLITESSE here. I’m more than happy to row in with that given she was only beaten 3 lengths in a Grade 2 at Down Royal on return. That looked a good race and her previous form where she conquered Fakiera has been working out well since. She has more upsides than most of these and I fancy a bold show. Obviously if she becomes ridiculously short then I’d say to tread carefully but currently she looks a decent play.

Mrs Hyde has won her last two and should go well but she has to concede weight and might be worth taking on given her position in the market. Midnight Ginger catches the eye at a double-figure price as she jumped well at Fakenham and if she can build on that she could easily run into a place.

Newbury 12.40 Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (Class 1) 2m71/2f

Quite a few decent horses have started their chase careers in this race over the years and last years winning training Paul Nicholls looks to have a great chance with NEXT DESTINATION and Southfield Stone. Next Destination was a very good horse in 2018 when finishing third in the Ballymore before beating Delta Work in a Grade 1 at Punchestown. He missed the 2019 season but ran well behind Roksana on his comeback and I think he will be a better chaser.

Southfield Stone is in good form but has to give all of these 3lb and I prefer Kalooki as the danger as he could be anything after an easy win in a much lesser race at the course not to mention the yard are hitting form.

Newbury 1.15 Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2m61/2f

A really competitive handicap chase up next. Might be a good time to go and make a cuppa? No I’m only joking. I love these sorts of races as they usually throw up a juicy priced winner and the one I’ve taken a chance on here is HIGHEST SUN for Colin Tizzard. He’s developed into a bit of a cliff horse of mine but off a mark of 136 I have to include him. He has plenty of talent and if things drop right he will go close. He shaped as though he needed the run when fifth of six at Haydock and should come on plenty.

Kapcorse and Canelo are vying for favouritism at the time of writing and I’m not overly keen on either. The latter did put in a career best last time so has to be respected but he is up 8lb and this is much stronger so he’ll need to find more for sure. Hard to pinpoint an exact danger but I can see Almazhar Garde going well as he looks on the upgrade and did it with more to spare than I think it looked last time.

A fairly competitive race with one that stands out as one that could be fighting out graded races already and that is TEA CLIPPER. He has won 4 of his last 5 starts and his comeback win at Chepstow was run in a decent time and if coming on for that he could be better than this mark again.

On The Wild is seeking a hat-trick but did it in the mud last time and the main danger could be Jacamar at a bigger price who is off a really low mark and if finding the form of his Aintree win he will be right there.

Newcastle 2.05 Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m

Cornerstone Lad chinned Buveur D’Air in this last year to spring a 16/1 upset and he will have to beat the same connections this year to go back-to-back. That said I think EPATANTE is going to take a lot of beating if fully tuned up for this. The Champion Hurdle winner gets 7lb being a mare and is going for her fourth win in a row. She is the highest rated in the race for a reason and I would be surprised if she got beat.

Sceau Royal has been running well to start the season back over hurdles and could make up the forecast. Silver Streak won really well at Kempton lowering the colours of Verdana Blue in the process but this represents a different test and he’s strictly held by the favourite.

Newbury 2.25 Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Intermediate Hurdle (Listed Race) 2m1/2f

I’m really looking forward to seeing MARIE’S ROCK out for Nicky Henderson. This mare has looked extremely smart to date and I was massively taken with her win at Taunton. Sadly she was injured and hasn’t been seen since but she remains a fine proposition and if all is well following a wind op she should win this before going onto better things. This is no easy task but she has looked a classy operator and could just be better than these.

Milkwood is the danger as his form stacks up and he is a likeable type. Botox Has beat Allmankind on return and should also have more to come on handicap debut so shouldn’t be far away either.

Newbury 3.00 Ladbrokes Trophy Chase (Grade 3) 3m2f

The Ladbrokes Trophy is always fiercely competitive and Vinndication heads the market at the time of writing. We fancied him in the Charlie Hall but his jumping cost him valuable lengths and now he is only 1lb off top-weight so all mistakes will be punished. Denman was the last horse to carry a big weight to win this and I fancy AYE RIGHT who was behind Vinndication at Wetherby and carries 11lb less than his rival today. The step up in trip looks sure to suit and he is a fair each-way price in this deep race.

The other one I like off the low weight of 10-6 is POTTERMAN who has gone well on his last two runs and the form of those races look good so he is hard to ignore off that weight. Dangers obviously a plenty and Kildisart and Black Op both have solid claims. Secret Investor has also been talked up by his trainer Paul Nicholls.

Newcastle 3.15 Betfair Exchange Rehearsal Handicap Chase (Listed Race) 2m71/2f

Pym was firmly back on track on return beating If The Cap Fits in good style. He has to be feared as his jumping will take him a long way here but I like WHATMORE for Henry Daly. This horse is a really consistent performer and he ran a cracker on return when second to course specialist Regal Encore at Ascot, clear from the rest. He looks sure to build on that and is a leading player.

Pym should go well and is feared but The Butcher Said looks to have been handed a lenient mark and should also be in the shake-up. Yorkhill lines up here as a 10yo and hopefully puts in a safe round.

Ibleo first caught my eye when looking at this race as he ran well when second at Ascot on return and is clearly in great nick right now. MOONLIGHTER is preferred though as it’s hard to doubt his form. He was beaten narrowly by the exciting Greaneteen at Exeter and another big run looks assured here. He will tighten up from the run and is still open to improvement.

Zanza is probably the value play and was somewhat of an eye-catcher when second to Allmankind at Warwick last time so certainly enters calculations. Might be worth backing without the favourite or even the front two.
