Clonmel 12.15

A good card from Clonmel on Thursday and we kick off with a competitive maiden hurdle. The only horse who knows how to win in the field is AMBITIOUS FELLOW for Peter Fahey and if he can transfer that form over timber now he is going to take a bit of beating. He has been a bit of a negative in the betting this morning but I’m not quite sure why as he was nicely on top at the line at Fairyhouse. This field clearly lacks quality and he should improve now tackling obstacles. What’s not to like?

General Clermont has experience on side but he has had a few chances already to get his head in front over hurdles and isn’t one for maximum faith. Mahlers Dollar is the one that’s been backed into favouritism and he was clear from the rest when runner-up at Cork but he didn’t find a great deal off the bridle so might be opposable too.

Clonmel 12.45

It is hard to know just how good some of these will be over hurdles with not much to go on. The one who interests me the most is MORE THAN A MEMORY who was last seen at the track running behind Dysart Dynamo. That form looks vert smart as the winner has won easily again in a similar race. They were both well clear of the rest that day and if as good over hurdles he is the one to beat.

Where It All Began looks smart but his best runs have come over shorter so has it to prove at this longer trip but has the talent. The main danger could be Upping The Anti who has hurdles form in the book and if stepping forward from his last two runs is definitely a threat.

Clonmel 1.20

This looks a great chance for BROOMFIELDS JEREMY to get back to winning ways. This horse is lightly raced for his age and won here impressively back in January. He fell on final start at Thurles and shaped as though needing the run when fifth at Punchestown on return. If he tightens up from that off an unchanged mark he looks set for a big run at a venue he clearly operates well at. Bothar Dubh and potentially Pour Pavore will go forward and the selection should be ridden quietly and look to pick them off late.

The latter has won 2 of his last 3 and probably looks the danger. He is up 7lb though and that looks a bit harsh to me against a horse that should improve in the selection. Former Gold Cup second Anibale Fly returns back down in trip. He is 11 now but is a classy horse at best so shouldn’t be entirely ruled out if not getting tapped for toe.

Clonmel 1.55

This race has attracted plenty of in-form runners but MOUNT IDA is the one to beat. She is rated well clear on ratings and even though she does give weight away she still comes out best. She won the Kim Muir at the Festival with relative ease despite not having the best passage round. She then lost to Elimay in a very good mares chase at Fairyhouse which is quality form. If she is fit enough she will win this under Davy Russell.

The main danger is Fairyhill Run who has been so consistent in the handicap ranks and was last seen finishing third in a better race than this behind Envoi Allen. Scarlet And Dove and Cushinstown Finest will be in the mix if running to their most recent form but they all have the selection to beat.

Clonmel 1.55

Mount Ida 10/11

Clonmel 2.25

A fascinating renewal of the Clonmel Oil Chase and FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES gets the vote. This won’t be easy giving weight away but we know he goes well fresh and this trip should be more to his liking than when last seen in the Punchestown Gold Cup. His form is right up there and he was very impressive at Aintree in April. If he is back to his best here he should have too much for these. He bumped into the likes of Notebook, Chacun Pour Soi and Allaho last season so definitely deserves to be favourite here.

Royal Rendezvous has won his last 3 and he had Easy Game a length behind at Galway. He has to be feared but this definitely requires another step-up. The latter looked set to go close at Gowran when falling but could run a big race here and I actually think he might be the main danger. Hardline has enough to find.

Clonmel 2.55

This doesn’t look a great race with plenty of these out of form with the old girl CRACK ON CORRIE looking like a solid bet on her recent form. She won nicely over hurdles just over a week ago and we know she goes well off this mark over fences. She is 11 now so can’t be fully trusted to back-up but in such a weak race it looks an ideal opportunity with a 7lb claimer booked for the ride.

Captain Jimmy won really well last month but gets a big hike at the weights leaving Bitview Colin as my pick for the main danger if running to the level he did over fences at Limerick in October. Sanibel Island has been backed and fared best of those held up the last day so could also take a step forward and get involved.

Clonmel 3.25

Elliott and Mullins have dominated this in recent seasons so it’s quite surprising to see the latter without a runner this year. Elliott has the fav Bold Getaway but I’m going to chance the value in DIAMONDINTHEMUD. This mare by Getaway took her form up a notch again to chase home Kicking Princess at Wexford and the front 3 came miles clear so the form is solid enough. She sets the standard and has more to come so should take a bit of pegging back under Patrick Mullins.

Bold Getaway is an obvious danger as he shaped well when fourth in a maiden hurdle at Leopardstown 10 months ago. He switches back into a bumper now and will be sharper than most. Harald Hardrad makes his debut under Rules and has been nibbled at in the market so could also have a say in the nightcap.
