Chepstow 1.05

A tricky opener on ITV with plenty of these in with a chance. When You’re Ready is the 3/1 fav at the time of writing following a convincing win over C&D last time. He is clearly in good order and has to be feared but does look a bit short in an open race. I prefer the chances of PINK LEGEND for Venetia Williams. She returned with a career best to win at Ascot and while she was pulled up at Aintree she couldn’t get on the speed and her jumping let her down. She has been dropped a 1lb and will be happier at this track so is fancied to run a big race at an each way price.

Paint The Dream is my idea of the danger as he also needs to bounce back after a below par display at Cheltenham but his win here before that was impressive. He has had a wind op and looks set to run a big race. Zambezi Fix best of the rest following a better run when second at Sandown last time.

Kempton 1.20

This looks like a solid renewal with a few of these with more to come over fences including EDWARDSTONE who looks tough to beat on recent form. He won his last two over fences with ease and would likely be 3/3 if he didn’t get brought down on chase debut at Warwick. The way he won the Grade 1 Henry VII Chase at Sandown last time suggests he is clear of these as the ratings indicate and will be hard to beat even with a penalty to carry. If he wins this and wins it well he would have to be considered among some of the best novices heading into Cheltenham.

If Solo gets his jumping together he could be a danger as his form over fences is good but has let himself down a bit. Do Your Job fell against Edwardstone at Sandown so I wouldn’t write him off with a clear round but the way the selection powered clear last time suggests he sets a very high standard.

Chepstow 1.40

I was impressed with the way Porticello won at Wetherby but he failed to back that up at Doncaster and even with the yard going great guns I think he has a few questions to answer. Forever Blessed is a perfect 2-2 after winning impressively at Sandown last time. He looks the one to beat but I’m chancing SAINT SEGAL at double-figure odds. This horse overcame inexperience to win on debut at Bangor and while the bare form is nothing to write home about he is open to plenty of improvement and I think he is worth a crack at this level given the potential he brings to the table.

Of the rest Skycutter justified favouritism to make it 2-2 at Musselburgh and can also get involved in the argument with the promise of more to come. I think this looks a deep renewal and there could be some very nice horses battling this out. Magistrate was beaten at Cheltenham but the yard do very well in this race so he can’t even be ruled out either.

Kempton 1.55

Great to get the Value Tip back in the winners enclosure on Boxing Day and hopefully we can add another winner at Kempton on Monday. I really liked the way VALUE TIP won at Ascot last month and while she is up 5lb Fergal O’Brien has booked useful 3lb claimer Liam Harrison so the rise is largely negated. She had Coded Message, Go Millie Go, Martha Brae and Get The Appeal behind on that occasion and looks set to confirm the form this afternoon. She is unexposed over staying trips so should continue to improve as her stamina is drawn out.

Coded Message who was fourth to the selection has been dropped 2lb so is effectively 4lb better off and should come on fitness-wise so could easily emerge as the main danger. Emmpressive Lady back up in trip could also get competitive.

Chepstow 2.10

A 5lb rise doesn’t look enough to anchor the improving TAKE YOUR TIME especially with Harry Cobden taking over again in the saddle. He stayed on strongly last time and is clearly getting better as his stamina is drawn out. He was ultimately going away at the finish again last time and with more to come can bring up the hat-trick.

Al Dancer was a bit of an eye-catcher when fourth at Sandown and if he builds on that he could get competitive. Kateson likes it when the mud is flying and shaped well at Aintree so is also likely to be on the premises. Bells Of Peterboro was a creditable third on return last month and could also step forward from that but still needs more to peg back this fav.

Kempton 2.30

It is great to see SHISHKIN back out here and this is a Grade 2 by name only now. Nicky Henderson’s superstar has won his last 8 with relative ease and will be hard to beat wherever he turns up this season. This is his first run of the season but he would have to be well below fitness to be beaten.

Greaneteen is the main danger after putting in another cracking performance to win the Tingle Creek at Sandown last month. He is fully fit after two runs this season and if at his best will put it up to the selection but he will have to be at his best. Before Midnight and Sky Pirate have too much to find to spring an upset.

Chepstow 2.50

I love the Welsh National and it’s good to see last year’s winner SECRET REPRIEVE lining up again as he looks to make himself somewhat of a legend in these parts. He hasn’t actually been seen since running out an impressive winner in this last year so it has been the target all along. He is so lightly raced for his age there could be further improvement to come yet. I think Adam Wedge will ride him patiently again and look to pick them off from about 3 out like he did last year.

With 20 runners lining up you’d be foolish not to back one at a price and IWILLDOIT will do for me at around 12/1 at the time of writing. He has won 2 of his 3 starts over fences and was very impressive over 3 miles here last time jumping notably well. He has more to come yet and this test should really suit him. Dangers include Irish raider The Big Dog who could obviously be well handicapped and Highland Hunter who found himself back in the winners enclosure at Sandown, staying on strongly.

Kempton 3.10

A really competitive handicap to cap off ITV Racing on Monday at Kempton. I’ve taken two against the field with my main hope in the race FLEGMATIK for Dan Skelton. He has been dropped to a mark of just 124 now and is stepping back up in trip which suits him perfectly. He is entitled to strip a lot fitter following that Ascot fourth and has had a wind op as well which should help. We have seen him bounce back from a poor run in the past so 8/1 looks big.

Kittly’s Light is a threat if returning to form following a disappointing run at Newbury along with MORNING VICAR who I’m going to have a saver on for Nicky Henderson. He ran poorly at Newbury on return but with that under his belt could take a big step forward off a 3lb lower mark. He will enjoy this track and looks one to be very interested in.
