Chepstow 12.05

Given the front pair pulled some 8 lengths clear from the rest I’ll be surprised if a 5lb rise is enough to anchor LADY TREMAINE at Chepstow on Thursday. She made a winning handicap debut at Bangor last month and she looks open to further improvement now. This test should suit with the ground very deep and she should be galloping on strongly when the others have cried enough.

Dame Du Soir is a decent yardstick and she won this last year so has to be feared. She was beaten heavily at Cheltenham last time but might appreciate coming back over hurdles. Ruby Yeats is some 9lb below his last winning mark and handled conditions so could end up being best of the rest in a race lacking strength.

Chepstow 12.40

This looks like a very good maiden with at least 3 or 4 above average horses in here. With Port Or Starboard a non runner this morning I think. I’m going to chance EXTRAORDINARY MAN at decent odds. He ran a really good race when second to Balco Coastal at Huntingdon and with further improvement to come he looks a big player. The ground is very testing though so he does have to prove himself on that.

Of the rest the two hurdle debutants Marco Island and Pachacuti are clearly pretty good horses especially the former who won his only race so far but just have to prove they are as good on this ground. Last time out point winner Git Maker has been backed for the Snowden team so also has to catch the eye.

Chepstow 1.10

All the money has been for BALLYBEEN this morning and that’s good to see as I thought he was quite big at 10/3 last night. Bizarrely enough he has clocked some decent times even in defeat and this is easier so with further improvement to come he could take a major hand here for Sam Thomas. I thought he was tenderly handled to finish fifth at Exeter and I’m expecting a much improved display this afternoon.

Hatos ran with promise when third in a bumper over C&D last time and if he improves for jumping hurdles he could be the danger to the selection. Drenagh has plenty of experience in bumpers and only went down narrowly on hurdles bow back from a lengthy absence so could also play a part in the finish.

Just the 3 runners are set to go to post for this race and it looks like ASK A HONEY BEE’s to lose based on what we know so far. He has some rock solid from over fences and is regularly seen in graded company. He is rated 35lb clear of Captain Cuckoo on ratings and it will likely take a fall to see him beat.

The only danger could be Coalbrook Bridge who they have kept in training despite his only run being back in 2019 where he pulled up. To keep going with him he must be showing something at home but after 754 days off the track and no experience you would have to think this is just a race to see where he is at.

Ask A Honey Bee 1/7

Chepstow 2.15

Another horse that has been well backed on the Chepstow card today in the shape of MAHON POINT for Fergal O’Brien. This son of Kayf Tara ran a promising race on debut for this yard running on strongly for third in a bumper here. He clearly has a big engine and if he can build on that again now tackling hurdles he is going to be a danger to all this afternoon. He clearly must have been showing something at home to be as short in the betting as he is now.

Dom Of Mary is the obvious danger to the selection. He made a somewhat eye-catching start over hurdles when fourth at Newbury and that experience will definitely make him a threat here. That looked a fairly decent race so it should be a good race between the two mentioned. Crossing Lines represents David Pipe and is another one worth noting despite his absence. The market should prove informative for his chances.

Chepstow 2.50

This looks a fairly strong handicap for the grade with a few of these looking to have the potential to be a lot better. NOTEBOOK won on his first run for Venetia Williams despite not having the best of runs he won by over 5 lengths. He should be better for that run and I expect he is better than his mark of 119 and is the one to beat.

The market can’t split the selection and Can You Call and he is certainly the danger. He was going to be at least 2nd when he fell at Hereford last month and will like the softer conditions. My only reservation was I don’t think he has as much scope for improvement as the selection does.

Chepstow 3.20

I thought there was a lot to like about the way HELIOS ALLEN beat Representing Bob over C&D in November. The latter was in good form at the time and he stayed on well to beat him by 5 and a half lengths. The front pair pulled a couple of lengths clear and the field was well strung out. He went up 9lb for that but acquitted himself well in defeat at Exeter and that race has already worked out since. He is open to improvement and will take a lot of stopping here.

Garincha is lightly raced for Neil Mulholland and powered clear to win at Wetherby last time. He can also improve and could be the danger but the penalty makes life tougher. Caswell Bay is lower in the weights and might also play a hand but I think he is probably vulnerable for win purposes on the balance of his form recently.

Chepstow 3.50

A fairly open race to cap off the afternoon at Cheptow and DESTIN D’AJONC appeals at the prices. His last win was over course and distance in similar conditions. He is now back down to just a 1lb above his last winning mark and I fully expect him to step forward on his second outing of the season and go better than his price suggests.

Gemirande seems to be much better for going chasing and based on his last run would have a good chance here and be a danger to all of his rivals. My doubt with him is he has faced softer conditions twice and pulled up both times so he will really have to prove himself which is why I can’t have him as the favourite.
