Newmarket 1.15
A field full of unraced 2yos for the opener at Newmarket on Tuesday. Very much Notebooks at the ready as there looks to be some nice fillies lining up for this. Charlie Appleby has won 2 of the last 3 renewals but doesn’t have a runner this time around and it does look open as you’d expect. Narrow preference is for George Boughey’s Galileo Gold filly BOJINK. She is well bred and looks to have plenty of speed in her pedigree. William Buick has been booked for the ride and I think she’ll go well.
As always in these races the market will likely prove significant so I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t have a play until post time to see what is being favoured. Clive Cox saddles Dark Angel filly Lost Angel who was fairly expensive as a yearling. Could be the danger.
Newmarket 1.50
Really wide open handicap with plenty of these likely to be better for the run. POPMASTER is worth siding with after an unlucky finish to the season in a hot handicap at York. He was hampered that day and would have gone pretty close. He gets to run off a mark 1lb lower here and his trainer is in good form. He should go well to kick off his season and at 6/1 at the time of writing he looks a knocking each way bet to me.
Gale Force Maya is the danger the way she finished the season just missing out on a hat-trick. If she is ready to roll then she will be a player. Chipstead is another one who was on a roll when last seen and has to be a danger to all as well.
Newmarket 2.25
This looks a decent renewal and I’m looking forward to seeing Richard Hannon’s Night Of Thunder colt TACARIB BAY reappearing. He made a really bright start winning on debut at Haydock and while he wasn’t disgraced when third in the Horris Hill I do think he is better than what he showed that day. I know connections are hopeful of a big season and this would be an ideal starting point. The yard have won this with Shifting Power and Anna Nerium in recent years so they usually target a good one at it.
The only other horse entered in the 2000 Guineas in the field is New Science for Charlie Appleby. He looked very promising winning a Listed race at Ascot as a 2yo and I think you can probably put a line through his defeat out in Meydan back in February. Likely danger.
Newmarket 3.00
This doesn’t look the deepest Earl Of Sefton and MASTER OF THE SEAS has to be the one to be on here with the way Charlie Appleby has started the season. He ran with credit in plenty of the top races last season and seems to thrive at Newmarket. This looks like a great starting point for him and he should go very well.
Megallan is very consistent when running on good ground and this trip looks idea for this son of Kingman. If he is near his best he will be a danger to all here. The rest all have enough to find but I suppose I can see Bell Rock shaping well.
Newmarket 3.35
This has been won by some nice fillies down the years and while this isn’t the strongest of renewals I do think CACHET looks a good bet. She ran a big race when third to Inspiral in the bet365 Fillies’ Mile before going down all guns blazing at the Breeders’ Cup. She is open to further improvement and this race should be within reach on her return. Her price is about right but she ticks the right boxes.
Hello You was behind her in America and will need to find more to reverse that now. Perfect News is likeable and was only beaten 2 and a quarter lengths into third in the Oh So Sharp Stakes so also has to be considered. Ribbon Rose is unbeaten but this will be a stern test of her credentials.
Newmarket 4.10
Of the 5 runnings of this race 4 of the winners had a run previously so that is way I am going here. CRENELLE caught the eye on debut at the start of the month running really green before finding trouble in-running. She only lost by half a length after going off odds-on and it would take one of the newcomers being very good to beat her. The yard won this last year and she looks to have a promising future so she gets a confident vote to come out on top.
Fonteyn is the main danger with form in the book after going close at Newcastle last year. Thanks Monica is another one that should have a bright future but might do better for the run. Of the newcomers Dancing Eagle could go well for the in-form Charlton yard.
Newmarket 4.45
A tricky handicap to conclude but I think one thing is for certain MR ALAN is overpriced. This colt by Ulysses shaped with plenty of promise when midfield on debut at Yarmouth and confirmed that encouragement to win convincingly at Ayr. He took his form up a notch to finish fourth in a Listed race in France on final start as a 2yo and an opening mark of 89 may well underestimate him here. They will likely go hard here and he looks to have a big engine so the step up to this trip can see him progress again.
Educator looks the danger for Haggas. He improved with every run and deservedly got his head in front at Haydock on his final start. He is likely to have strengthened up over the winter and this trip won’t bother him. High Fibre best of the rest.
