Newmarket 1.50

I love Guineas day and we kick off with a fiercely competitive handicap for the opener on ITV and I’ve taken two against the field. Dark Angel filly TARHIB looked a lovely prospect when she won on the bridle at Yarmouth as a 3yo. She was obviously very cramped odds on that occasion so was entitled to go and win as she did and was subsequently well held in a Listed race at Doncaster. It’s still early days for her though and an opening mark of 83 may well underestimate her. Hollie Doyle is up and I think she’ll run huge.

I also like BICKERSTAFFE now with Roger Teal. He is a horse with plenty of ability and capped off last season with a win on final start for Karl Burke. He is only 3lb higher and won fresh last season. If he gets carried into this and it drops right he is no 16/1 shot as I think he has as good a claims as any horse in here. Dangers a plenty and Jumby would head them. He ran well when third in the Abernant on return and back in handicap company he will run well. Asjad also made my shortlist despite carrying a penalty.

Thirsk 2.05

The Thirsk Hunt Cup is always very hard to dissect despite it not being the usual huge field handicap. It pays to take one at a price here and DELGREY BOY gets the vote. Other than when needing the run on his comeback at Redcar last month he hasn’t been out of the frame in his last 6. He gets to run off the same mark as when going close behind Excel Power at Haydock last week and should go vey well here if in the same form.

On A Session looks the main danger after going very close in a good handicap at Lingfield earlier in the month. He likely has more to come for his new stable and will be competitive here. Astro King is likely to have more to come as a 5yo and also has to be noted with Mark Crehan claiming a handy 3lb.

Fast Medicine was impressive beating an in-form horse in Cliffcake easily at Nottingham on return last time. He didn’t really see another rival on that occasion though and will have to fight for this so I’m not sure he represents much value to follow up. I like Frankel colt DHAHABI for the red-hot Appleby and Buick. He has plenty of untapped potential and while he’ll need to raise his game I think connections think a fair bit of him to keep him in training following such a long layoff. The market will be revealing but I’m keen to chance him.

If the selection blows out fitness-wise then I’m happy to include LUCANDER as an each way saver. He is still just a 5yo which I find crazy seeing as it feels like he has been around a while. He goes well fresh and is only 3lb higher than his last winning mark. He looks a great each way play to me. Movin Time heads the dangers as he could have more to come now he has been gelded. Forest Falcon is tough and is another one to note with that reappearance run under his belt.

Goodwood 2.40

This doesn’t look a deep race on paper and very much PRIMO BACIO’s to lose. She ran well at the top level for most of the season before a couple of lesser runs late in the season which were probably down to a long campaign. She will be fresh for this and if anywhere near her best she will win this much easier race before going on to bigger things. I thought 15/8 at the time of writing was quite generous and she should go off a fair bit shorter come post time.

The main danger is Zanbaq who has raced once and won once. The form of the novice race she won doesn’t look amazing but she could still be anything so she has to be feared. Almohandesah ran well when second to Cachet on return and is another one that could run a big race.

I’ve got fond memories of the Palace House Stakes from way back when Richard Hughes picked his way through on the loveable Sole Power. I think there is a good chance we’re going to see another promising horse in the shape of TWILIGHT CALLS for Henry Candy. This Twilight Son gelding evidently wasn’t the easiest to train last season but was given a light campaign on the whole and he looked potentially smart winning on return over C&D 16 days ago. Probert barely asked for an effort and he was already quickening up to settle it. If he has come out the race well I think he’ll prove too classy for these.

From a price perspective I’ve had to have a saver on WHENTHEDEALINSDONE for Roger Teal. This horse actually had the selection in behind when winning at Goodwood last season and is a very useful sort when he applies himself. Even in defeat towards the end of last season he wasn’t disgraced and I’m shocked to see him in here at 25/1. Others to note include Tis Marvellous and Came From The Dark who are both sure to run big races on their return.

Newmarket 3.40

It’s by no means the strongest renewal of the 2000 Guineas but as always there will be a few Group 1s in this field over the course of the year. The superstar in the line-up currently is NATIVE TRAIL who has won all 5 of his runs including 2 Group 1s. They got a prep run into him over course and distance a couple of weeks ago which he won easily. He should come on for that run and it will take one of these to improve a lot to beat him.

There are a few dangers including stablemate Coroebus who impressed last season and probably should be unbeaten if it weren’t for Buick going early on him in the Royal Lodge. Luxembourg looks to be O’Brien’s number 1 in this and comes here unbeaten winning a Group 1 on his last start and could be the biggest danger. Perfect Power is a horse we have followed plenty over the last year and if getting the trip could be a nice price for a place.
