NAP – Best selection of the evening
MY US NAP RUNS IN RACE 2 AT DEL MAR ON SUNDAY NIGHT!
Race 2 Del Mar 10.33 Laurel River (5/6)
Promising colt who set the pace and drew right away from rivals to win by an emphatic 11 and a half lengths over track and trip when last seen; won fresh last season and open to improvement so hard to beat.
The US NAP was disappointing last night so hopefully I can put that right on Sunday night. We head to Del Mar where LAUREL RIVER should be up to justifying favouritism. He won emphatically when last seen and a similar performance here would make him tough to beat. He was thought good enough to contest graded company on just his third start so connections clearly think a fair bit of him. He won first-up last season so has no worries turning up fresh here and class is expected to tell. Elector won 2 of his first 3 starts but completely blew out in a Grade 2 at Santa Anita last time so has plenty to prove off the back of that despite this being easier company. Affable might be the one for second.
Race 7 Saratoga 9.22 Soldier Rising (9/4)
Likeable type who built on an encouraging reappearance to win convincingly at Belmont last month; denied just a neck by Channel Maker in a much tougher race than this last time; still capable of better.
I don’t see anything else in here capable of getting within a neck of Channel Maker so that makes SOLDIER RISING a standout to me. This 4yo remains lightly raced and back in calmer waters I think he’ll have too many gears for these rivals. Hard Love is expected to go off hard and put good pace to the race and that should help the selection to settle before looking to close late. Flop Shot looks the danger but we haven’t seen him since April where he won at Aqueduct. He has come over from France and while he is a 6yo he could still have more to offer Stateside and looks the obvious threat to the favourite if fit and well back from an absence. Ocala Dream possibly good enough to hit the frame.
