Guineas Preview

I love the 2000 Guineas! It’s been hugely profitable for us in recent years having tipped the winner five times from the last seven runnings. Dawn Approach was probably the most satisfying given the amount that doubted him going into the race and how easily he won. In terms of price Galileo Gold was by far the best streaking clear to win at 16/1 under Frankie Dettori. Beating a future Derby winner in the process! That was a great day (and night)! It’s a bit of a weird year with what’s been going on obviously but take nothing away it is still a strong looking renewal and I can’t wait.

Newmarket Saturday 3.35 Pinatubo (5/6) Military March (16/1)

The race undoubtedly revolves around PINATUBO for Charlie Appleby. This colt has looked unstoppable winning all 6 starts and for me I find him impossible to oppose. The way he blitzed them at the Curragh with Buick grinning through his teeth was truly breathtaking. He capped off a remarkable season with a two-length win in the Dewhurst and while it wasn’t as sparkling as his last performance it showed he can do it both ways. Arizona had everything go his way but still had no answers in the closing stages. I think whatever they try to do to beat him he will find a way and he is just all class. He has to be my selection.

In terms of a danger I’m quite confident MILITARY MARCH is going to run a big race for Saeed bin Suroor. This colt by New Approach made a big impression on me with how he won last time and he comes into the race unbeaten and a bit of a dark horse. He was still learning on the job when last seen and overcame inexperience to win in good style in the end. He has plenty more to come I think and while he’ll need a big step up to put up any resistance to the fav I think he can and he is value to hit the frame at 16/1! Others to note include Kameko who sprung an upset in the Futurity and of course Arizona who has reportedly been flying at home and did push the favourite closest here last time.

Newmarket Sunday 3.35 Quadrilateral (5/2) Millisle (5/1)

While the 1000 Guineas hasn’t been as good as the 2000 for us over the years we have still had some big wins and Sky Lantern was the best of them back in 2013! Minding another highlight. It looks competitive this year but QUADRILATERAL is the one that I’m siding with. She is beautiful bred being by Frankel and hasn’t put a foot wrong winning all three starts to date. She first caught my eye winning on debut. She was held up that day but made relentless progress through the field before staying on well to edge out the more experienced Mambo Nights. She then took another step forward to demolish rivals at Newbury, powering clear under Jason Watson. It was no surprise to see her up in trip and class in the Fillies’ Mile last time and she showed a tremendous attitude under pressure to get back up and fend off Powerful Breeze. The latter herself looks a smart filly for Hugo Palmer and she had won her first two starts going into that. I think that’s the form to focus on. She will need a career best again but she has scope so should continue to improve and rates a confident selection to come out on top.

Dangers are a plenty in a race of this nature so I’m putting forward MILLISLE as an each way saver for Jessica Harrington. She looked in all kinds of trouble in the Cheveley Park Stakes before taking off in the closing stages to win going away under Shane Foley. She must have a serious engine to quicken up like that and if she gets the breaks she’ll be finishing strongly under Oisin Murphy. Definitely worth including at around 6/1! Others to note include Raffle Prize, who she beat last time, but is a solid filly who lends a decent form-guide to this race. At a bigger price Cloak Of Spirits can step forward too but might just bump into a couple.
