Newbury 1.15

We kick off Betfair Super Saturday with BRAVEMANSGAME. I know many will be opposing and we will likely get a better price as a result but Nicholls found nothing wrong in the tests he did Monday at the yard. Class does show through usually as you saw from Honeysuckle at the weekend with her yard underperforming by their standards. Bravemansgame is a class above based on his form which has been franked by Ahoy Senor in impressive fashion. He gives weight away but if anywhere near his best he will win.

The danger to the selection is Pats Fancy who is on a hat-trick after streaking clear at Chepstow last time out. He is improving and would be the one to take advantage if Bravemansgame isn’t himself. Grumpy Charley is another horse going the right way and he might have a part to play but that’s only if the fav doesn’t run his race.

Warwick 1.35

This race never really attracts that many runners and sadly that’s the case again this year. INDEFATIGABLE won it back in 2020 and looks the one they all have to beat again. She has been very consistent in recent times winning a Grade 2 at Wetherby in October. That form looks really good now with what Proschema has achieved since and while she blew out at Newbury she was back to form beaten just a neck by the progressive Martello Sky at Cheltenham. Freshened up since with this in mind she should have too much.

Marie’s Rock will likely be the one for money but she is very hit and miss. She was super impressive beating An Tailliur but was then pulled up last time. She was hampered by a faller but I just can’t trust her and the fav looks a much safer proposition. Whitehotchillifili is likeable but has enough to find with the principals.

Newbury 1.50

A wide open race with the majority of the field carrying low weights with the top weight The Big Breakaway being rated so high. RISK AND ROLL is worth chancing to back up his easy win at Huntingdon last time. He is up 10lb from that but could have more to offer after only a few runs over hurdles in the last few years and he will run a big race. The horse he beat into second Gazette Bourgeoise has clocked some decent speed figures and went into that having won at Hereford so I think the form is rock solid.

The Big Breakaway is interesting after a wind operation and back over hurdles. This is the easiest opposition he has faced in a while and could run very well even giving chunks of weight away. Polish won this last year for Fergal O’Brien and is another one that shouldn’t be ruled out as I think he will show up well for a long way.

Warwick 2.05

Following that mishap on chase debut where he was brought down EDWARDSTONE hasn’t looked back over fences, making it 3-3 winning head in chest again at Kempton last time. He is a strong travelling sort and a sound jumper and I love the way he pours it on late. He swept past Third Time Lucki en route to Grade 1 glory at Sandown and I fully expect him to bring up the four-timer this afternoon before having a crack at the Arkle at Cheltenham next month.

Third Time Lucki is improving over fences himself and was impressive at Doncaster last month but I still think he has enough to find if he is to reverse that Sandown form. Brave Seasca is also going the right way but this is tougher. The yard are flying so he has to be respected but I’ll be surprised if he can beat the favourite.

Newbury 2.25

Another Nicholls’ horse that looks to have a great chance here to put the yard’s quiet period behind them. CLAN DES OBEAUX was chinned in this last year by his stablemate Secret Investor but was giving 6lb away that day so it wasn’t a bad effort. He has since been fitted with cheekpieces and has won two very good Grade 1’s as well as finishing second in the King George on Boxing Day. He is clear on official ratings and if he runs to anywhere near his best he should take all the beating.

The dangers would be Royale Pagaille who I fear it could be slightly too quick for and Eldorado Allen who I think could improve for the step-up to this trip and outrun his odds. This has potential to turn a bit tactical though with no obvious speed so hopefully Harry Cobden is fairly positive on the selection.

Newbury 3.00

With Editeur Du Gite now out we have just the 4 runners heading to post. I’m really keen on HITMAN getting back in the winners enclosure. Obviously if Bravemansgame and Clan Des Obeaux have been beaten I’ll have to reassess my position but given I fancy both of them I think today could be the day Nicholls turns a corner. This horse has run two very solid races so far this season and with further improvement to come can see off last year’s winner in the race Sceau Royal.

The latter is a very smart horse but he is a 10yo now and I do think he will be vulnerable to some younger legs here. I wouldn’t even rule out Sky Pirate who is mixing it with the big boys here but is a quirky sort who could easily come there travelling before hopefully finding the selection too strong. Funambule Sivola looks the one I’d oppose most.

Warwick 3.15

This handicap has be one of the most open races of the day. It is only 11 runners but still 5/1 the field at the time of writing. I am going to side with OUR POWER for Sam Thomas. He has won two of his last three over fences and his win at Huntingdon suggested he has a bit more to come. The quicker surface should be perfect for him and he looks a good price and will run a big race under Gavin Sheehan. He will be ridden forward and the way the ground has been riding recently that should also be a positive thing.

I have always rated Jacamar but he needs to jump better to show how good he really is as I think he is better than 132. The main danger could well be Celebre D’Allen who has won his last two nicely over hurdles and could have more to come over fences. Of the rest Cheddleton also catches the eye going up in trip.

Newbury 3.35

The way VALUE TIP won this last year was very impressive and despite carrying top-weight this time around I think he can defend his crown. He ran out a convincing winner on return at Ascot and while he has been beaten the last twice he has had excuses. He is an enthusiastic individual and I think it’s quite clear small fields don’t play to his strengths. He never really found any rhythm when last of 4 here back in November and while he shaped better in the Christmas Hurdle again he couldn’t show his true colours.

Back into handicap company with a strong pace to aim at I think he’ll come home well under Jonjo O’Neill. Jpr One looks the danger with more to come but lacks experience and might find this test coming too soon. Similar comments apply to Broomfield Burg as impressive as he has looked.
