York 1.45 Sky Bet And Symphony Group Handicap (Class 2) 5f89y

A fiercely competitive handicap to kick off York’s Ebor Festival and given the nature of the race and the each way incentives on offer I’ve actually backed three against the field. JAWWAAL is favourite at the time of writing and I do think he is the most likely winner. This good looking chestnut was back to winning ways following a 259-day absence at Doncaster before running out an ultra-impressive winner at Ascot last time. 8lb rise obviously demands more but he is in the form of his life so should go close and is worth keeping on side.

The other two I’ve backed at prices are LAHORE and JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE. The latter looks way overpriced at 16/1 as he was right back to form when beaten less than a length at Ayr last time and if building on that is a danger to all here. The former improved to get back to winning ways over C&D last month before losing little in defeat at Hamilton. Relishes this test so should run a big race at a price. Dangers obviously a plenty but Magic J and Jonah Jones probably just about feared most.

York 2.15 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3) 7f

This looks a solid Group 3 and like past winners of this race they look set for bigger and better prizes in the future. CLOUDBRIDGE has to be the bet in this race after a taking debut at Leicester winning by 3 and a half lengths. The time of the race was very good and River Alwen back in third has won since beating a well fancied odds-on shot at Haydock. He is likely to have more to come after learning a fair bit on debut and should be hard to beat as he looks to make it 2-2.

Darvel looks the main danger after his good win at Ayr but that was over the 6 furlongs and on his second outing so our selection likely has more potential. Hard to know exactly where the pace is going to come from but I think Buick will want to get a lead before producing him with a winning run.

York 2.45 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2) 1m3f188y

John Gosden has dominated this in recent years with the likes of Cracksman and Logician winning with the latter going on to win the St Leger impressively. He could easily have another exciting sort on his hands in Dubai colt DARAIN. He is unbeaten in two starts to date and impressed under a penalty last time. This exciting sort could be open to any amount of improvement and I think he looks better value than the favourite Mogul. He can be keen so will need to get settled but there looks to be plenty of pace on which should help him especially in the early stages.

The favourite picked up the pieces in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood last time but a couple underperformed in that race and I think the form looks questionable. Too short in a race of this quality. I can see Roberto Escobarr running better than his odds suggest. He caught the eye when third on debut and looks a smart prospect winning here last month. Should hit the frame.

Darain 7/2 EYE CATCHER

York 3.15 Juddmonte International Stakes (Group 1) 1m2f56y

What a race we have on our hands here and I may surprise a few of you by siding with KAMEKO but with good reason. 3 year olds have won 4 of the last 6 runnings of this race with Japan upsetting Crystal Ocean last year. The selection won the 2000 Guineas impressively and you could see how devastated Oisin Murphy was last time at Goodwood when he didn’t get any sort of run up the rail. They clearly think a lot of this horse and his ideal trip is unknown still but they did run him in the Derby so should be fine over a mile and a quarter.

Ghaiyyath will be fancied again and could go off odds-on but I would rather avoid at the prices as he has won well on his last two runs but he beat Enable and Stradivarius on their seasonal debuts where they clearly weren’t fully fit. For me Magical would be the main danger as the form of her last run was rock solid and she should be thereabout at the finish. Always runs to a consistent level.

York 3.45 Sky Bet Handicap (Class 2) 2m56y

Another tough handicap and I’ve taken two against the field. Make My Day has surprised me somewhat with how much he’s improved and we were with him when he won well here last month but this has strength in depth and at the prices I have to take him on as he is a bit of a lazy sort and I can see him being overbet off a mark of 90. Respected but at the same time opposable. VOLCANIC SKY is my main each way play in the race. This son of Street Cry put in a huge run to win at Newmarket by a nose. He was subsequently demoted to second but quickly gained compensation winning impressively at Kempton. He showed a smart turn of foot and is improving fast. A 10lb rise makes life much tougher I have to admit but there could still be a fair bit more to come and at 8/1 it looks a chance worth taking.

My second play in the race is RAJINSKY for Tom Dascombe and Richard Kingscote. This Zoffany gelding is hugely talented and he has been catching the eye all season. He ran a monster race when denied a neck at Ascot and backed that up only going down narrowly to Reshoun at Newbury last time. He has it in him to win a big one like this and looks a stonking each way bet at around 16/1 at the time of writing. The favourite along with True Destiny and Rochester House look the dangers.

York 4.20 Sky Bet Fillies’ Sprint Handicap (Class 2) 5f

A wide open fillies’ sprint handicap with so much pace on offer this should be run in a decent time. York compared to the Goodwood meeting a few weeks ago favours horses off the pace a bit more and with a large chunk of the field looking to go forward I am siding with FREE LOVE. She put in a great run behind Glamorous Anna at Windsor being held up and flying home late to lose out by a nose. Glamourous Anna has won again since and the swing at the weights today is 9lb. A run to that level again will see her go very close.

Keep Busy is the main danger as she will be held up behind the leaders and ran really well to win at Hamilton last time out. Dancin Inthestreet and Pink Sands also have to be considered in a wide open sprint handicap.

York 4.20

Free Love 16/1 each way LONGSHOT

York 4.50 Sky Bet Nursery (Class 2) 6f

Churchill Bay looks too short to me at 4/1 and I’ve backed two against the field as a result. LINE OF DEPARTURE looks on the upgrade following two convincing wins at Yarmouth and Ascot and while a further 5lb rise makes things tougher he may have it in him to land the hat-trick and is attractively priced to do so. Happy to get the vote. He won’t be too far away from the speed either which should be a positive.

MUTAZAWWED stands out to me as a colt open to considerable improvement and he went very close at Hamilton last time. The step up to 7f should suit and he is also worth plenty of market attention in my book. Others to be fearful of include Cairn Island and Pure Dreamer in a competitive race to end Day 1. Trackers at the ready as this should throw up plenty of future winners.
