Carlisle 2.25 Esprit Du Large (1/1)

Quickly developed into a smart chaser last term, winning a Grade 1 at Sandown; found the Arkle too hot at Cheltenham; still going well when falling 5 out on return in Exeter’s Haldon Gold Cup; big chance granted a clear round.

I know he’s fallen the last twice but ESPRIT DU LARGE still has plenty of potential over fences and this looks a good race to get back on track. He jumped well in the main at Exeter before taking a tumble. I’m willing to forgive him that and in much calmer waters here should have too much for them. It’s no surprise to see him so short in the market and I think he’ll justify favouritism comfortably under Brian Hughes. Whoshotthesheriff was decent over hurdles and he made an encouraging start over fences when second to Flegmatik over C&D last month. He should build on that and looks the danger but I’ll be surprised if he has enough to turn over the selection.

Southwell 5.05 Charlie Fellowes (6/5)

Took his time to get off the mark but did it impressively at Beverley and followed up in equally good style at Wolverhampton last month; going the right way now and is the one they all have to beat if taking to fibresand.

Country Charm isn’t a bad yardstick and CHARLIE FELLOWES thrashed her by over 7 lengths at Wolverhampton last time. He comes here chasing a hat-trick and confidence is high so I think it’ll take a big performance to stop him. Obviously he has to prove himself on the surface but if he does I think he’ll leave the others standing. Princess Of Lir shaped with ability when third on debut and is open to progress so looks the one to give the favourite a race. A Pint Of Bear is proven on the surface winning here last time so shouldn’t be entirely discounted but does need to step forward to trouble the front pair. Professor Galant, Followthefootsteps and Piranhadrama don’t look good enough.
