A competitive Novices’ Handicap Chase to kick off the card at Leicester on Wednesday and I’ve taken a chance on one at a monster price in EAIRSIDH. He is 14/1 at the time of writing and I have that all wrong. He is bred to stay and this is the longest trip he would have faced so far stepping up to 2 and three quarter miles. He probably shaped better than the bare result at Taunton on handicap hurdle debut and now sent chasing there could be plenty of improvement to come. I think as long as he isn’t taken off his feet early he will be finishing strongly.
The dangers are the two market principals Skinflint and Out The Glen. The former has been really consistent and is entitled to come on for that second at Uttoxeter but the winner did let the form down yesterday. Out The Glen should probably be outright favourite as he is likely to improve and this isn’t the strongest of contests.
Just the 3 runners for this Novice Chase and it looks like a penalty kick for DUSART. His form last season is top class beating Soaring Glory before finishing third in a Grade 1 over hurdles. He clearly has plenty more to come and if anywhere near his best on chase debut he will take this. Connections will still be very hopeful that he has a bright future in this sphere so anything other than a win will be disappointing. He should bag this prize before going on to better things.
The main danger looks to be Sail Away who runs well over longer trips and the wind-op he had could help him go well here. Barnaviddaun isn’t without hope but he seems to be better over 2 and a half miles and doesn’t look the strongest stayer.
I’m going to take a chance on NOTEBOOK turning over the short priced favourite Dreamsundermyfeet at Leicester on Wednesday. He remains lightly raced especially over fences and he created a big impression winning so easily at Huntingdon back in May last year. He never managed to land a blow on return at Plumpton and didn’t jump well enough to be a factor.
He was back to form at Newbury last month but still did too much in the early stages. If Tom Cannon can get him to conserve energy a bit better early on in the race then I don’t think they’ll be able to live with him late. The handicapper has given him a bit more help dropping him a further 2lb and I think he is a danger to all here. Dreamsundermyfeet has already won twice over fences so has to be the main danger.
This looks a wide open race with most of these in with a shout here. CREALION is the one I like the most here now he is back down to this trip as he clearly didn’t stay all of 3 miles at Wincanton. He went close in his previous 2 chase starts and I think he can win a race like this off a mark of 118. He is 5/1 at the time of writing and that looks a very solid each way play in another competitive handicap.
Kilbrook is the main danger after winning on chase debut on his first outing of the season. He will be better for the run and experience and the 5lb rise shouldn’t be enough to stop him being a threat here. One Forty Seven struggled in a good race at Cheltenham but will find this easier so also deserves a second look.
I loved the way ZAMBELLA put them to the sword at Doncaster a fortnight ago and if she reproduces that sort of run here she will put this field away with a minimum of fuss. She is progressing really well at present and looks well placed by connections to bring up the hat-trick under Sam Twiston-Davies. I know she isn’t much of a price but she is a decent proposition to chuck into an acca for the day (see our Mega Acca on Twitter).
Maskada is the likely danger on paper but I wouldn’t be surprised if Allavina stepped forward enough to chase the long odds-on fav home and you’d get a good price about that so it might be worth looking at. Costly Diamond has it all to do to even get competitive.
This looks a pretty weak content and I would be willing to give RAMONEX another chance. He pulled up over 3 miles again last time out at Doncaster but at this trip he is much better. He started the season behind Brelan D’As at Newcastle in a better race than this. He is 4lb lower than that now and I think this is a race that lacks quality so he will go very well.
Celma Des Bois is the main danger if near full fitness coming off a 293-day break. His form at the end of last season would be good enough to win this but he may need the run. Happy News could be overpriced as he tends to run well every other run for some reason and he won the last time he ran over course and distance.
