Huntingdon 1.00
A tricky start to the day at Huntingdon but I’m seeing that as a good thing as METHAG looks a massive price. She won here impressively a couple of years back and she has dropped back down below a mark of 100 for the first time in ages. She ran a big race when third to Neverbeen To Paris at Plumpton in November and probably shaped better than the bare result when fourth at that venue last month. The handicapper has dropped her a further 2lb since and I can see her getting involved in an open race.
Alberic is still a maiden and is vying for favouritism so that shows you the lack of quality on show here. Ace Time is chasing a hat-trick but an 8lb rise makes life a lot tougher. He is probably a worthy favourite though. Smoking Pigeon has been nibbled at and has had a wind op so might be worth a second look.
Huntingdon 1.30
Another really open race with a few that could turn out to be pretty useful over hurdles. Any of 4 or 5 could win this with slight preference for DREAM IN THE PARK. Emma Lavelle’s gelding has finished second on both of his national hunt starts and looks to have plenty of potential on hurdles debut. He has handled softer ground before and I think he will go very well here.
Frère D’Armes brings some of the best form into the race with his hurdle debut last month looking a very good effort. He will likely step forward for that run and be a threat to all of these. My only reservation is the ground could be softer than he may like. Of the rest Peace River and Thanskforthehelp are worth keeping an eye on.
Huntingdon 2.00
Only 4 runners heading to post for this but that doesn’t make it any easier. I’m going to chance MAHLER’S PROMISE though. He has a likeable way of going and won impressively on just his second start over fences scoring by 9 lengths at Newton Abbot back in the summer. He has bumped into Minella Trump and Bothwell Bridge so far this season and looks to get his chance now. His form is among the best on offer and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t go close.
The danger is probably Barbados Blue who won on debut over fences at Fakenham back in October and has continued to run well in defeat since. She will need more though to come out on top here. If Our Power can put in a clear round he might not be far away either. Dorking Lad is talented on his day but doesn’t always convince either.
Huntingdon 2.30
This looks like a really good quality juvenile hurdle with a couple of these really impressing over hurdles already. KOTMASK for the Moore yard ran out a 12 length winner at Fontwell on his debut for the yard last year. That race as worked out really well with plenty of the horses in behind in the money since. He clearly has so much more to come and is the one to beat here.
Parliament Hill is the main danger after winning nicely at Leicester on his hurdles debut. He wouldn’t be far off the selection based on that run but the form hasn’t worked out as well. Of the rest I expect Collingham to use his experience to make up the top 3. This should throw up plenty of future winners and horses to follow.
Huntingdon 3.00
This is definitely between the top 2 in the betting and ready preference is for the mare HILLFINCH for Stuart Edmunds. She looked a nice prospect winning on debut before struggling under a penalty in fourth at Chepstow. She was back to form when a close third in a race that has worked out well last time though and she remains a promising hurdles prospect for the yard. This looks winnable and I think she is the most obvious one on what we’ve seen so far.
Holly Hartingo has experience on side having won on debut over hurdles at Ludlow but she has to give weight away as a result and that is never easy. Russian Rumour never figured at Listed level last time but will find this easier so also has to be considered but probably just best of the rest with the top 2 likely to dominate.
Huntingdon 3.30
An interesting handicap chase with plenty of these in with a decent chance but also have a few questions to answer. LORD SPARKY gets the vote back up to this trip after disappointing last time out. He won over course and distance in his run prior to that and a repeat of that would be good enough to win a weak race.
Loud As Lions has been off the track for 708 days but if anywhere near his previous form he could be a danger if fit enough. Zuckerberg’s trainer said he needed a break so it is interesting to see him here and could be a threat if suddenly rejuvenated.
Huntingdon 4.00
Another race where it looks a straight shootout and I’ve sided with BUTCH for Olly Murphy. The yard have been back amongst the winners recently and this son of Kayf Tara is certainly bred to be pretty useful and judging by the betting he is going to be forward enough to have a big say on debut. In a race of this nature though I’d never advice staking too much as they are for very inexperience horses.
Propelled is the threat for Nicky Henderson. He cost €65,000 and is also likely to know his job first-time up. Odin’s Quest represents Gary Moore and also likely has claims but might need more time and experience to be seen to best effect.
