Newbury 12.45

We kick off the card at Newbury with a decent novice hurdle with a few of these looking to have a fair bit of potential over timber. Preference is for SPEECH BUBBLE who ran well on her hurdles debut after showing she was talented in the national hunt flat sphere. She should improve a lot for that experience and it will take a good one to beat her despite it looking a competitive field.

Nicky Henderson looks like he has the main danger in Tweed Skirt who like the selection showed plenty in national hunt flat races. She has since won a good race at Ascot and will go well under a penalty. Of the rest Swincombe Fleat should have a say if in the same form as she was at Exeter last time.

Speech Bubble 3/1

Newbury 1.15

Nicky Henderson won this last year with Gallyhill and he could hold the aces again with WALKING ON AIR who is trading at a shade of odds-on at the time of writing. This Walk In The Park gelding is certainly bred to be pretty smart and he made a promising start under Rules when runner-up in a bumper at Kempton last year. He looks a nice prospect to go hurdling with and it will be disappointing if he doesn’t beat these which is being reflected by the market.

The danger is probably Hecouldbetheone who made a winning start over hurdles at Fontwell. He can improve but this is definitely tougher under a penalty. Maclaine cost €70,000 and shaped with promise when fourth in a bumper. He was only fifth on debut over hurdles last time but needs to settle better to have a say here.

Newbury 1.50

The usual small field for this race with just 5 declared. It rarely lacks quality though and it should work out well. It looks between the top 3 in the market but AMARILLO SKY definitely gets the verdict. He ran a cracker to win at Wincanton and followed that up with a very good second at Ascot. The form of that last run looks rock solid with the winner Brave Seasca winning again recently by a wide margin. If he is in the same form he is the one to beat.

Benny’s Bridge and Light N Strike are the main dangers with slight preference for the latter who is in great form currently with 3 seconds and a win on his last 4 starts. Bar those mentioned Son Of Camas might show up better with the application of blinkers but on the balance has enough to prove.

Newbury 2.25

Fine Casting is quite a short price for this following his win at Ffos Las last month. He could build on that and has to be feared but I think he is short enough and I’m going to pass him over. I prefer the chances of CHANCEUX who is chasing a hat-trick here. He has really convinced the last twice and an opening mark of 116 might not be beyond him. He should do better for the experience but might be good enough to land a telling blow here anyway. He will go forward and might even lead.

Fine Casting is probably the danger but Sheldon also deserves respect as he has been running well recently. Mascat made a winning start over hurdles at Wincanton and wasn’t disgraced last time so could also be a bit of value to hit the frame. Alborkan has been consistent but this is tougher again and he definitely needs to find more.

Newbury 2.25

Chanceux 9/2 each way

Newbury 3.00

Not the best race with plenty of these out of form leaving KEEP WONDERING a great opportunity to make it back-to-back wins. He won on heavy ground at Haydock which suggests this extra few furlongs on better ground should be just fine for him. He carries 3lb more here which shouldn’t be enough to stop him in a poor race. He is 2/1 at the time of writing but will likely go off a well backed favourite come post time.

The main danger could be Hawthorn Cottage who ran in a better race last time out and could be seen in a better light in this company. Wayfinder also deserves a mention but he does have enough to prove on the balance of his form. Storm Control has been pulled up the last twice but could also be dangerous if staging a revival.

Keep Wondering 2/1

Newbury 3.30

Victory over C&D last month took NOTEBOOK’s overall record to 4 wins from just 6 starts and she looks a thoroughly progressive mare. She looked to need the run when down the field at Taunton on return and made no mistake showing a cracking attitude under pressure to get back up over track and trip last time. The front pair pulled readily clear and a 2lb rise looks unlikely to anchor her here. I think Nico de Boinville might make even more use of her this time around and she is going to take a lot of pegging back. That was just her fifth start over hurdles so she remains open to further improvement and should be better than her current mark.

I think Voice Of Calm is the obvious danger again but she has a habit of finding one too good so I’m not sure she is up to reversing the form. Megan may well end up finishing third again so the betting has this spot on.

Newbury 4.00

This is usually one of the better national hunt flat races and this years renewal looks no different. AUTHORISED SPEED has run well on both starts to finish second including a good Listed race at Ascot last time. If he runs to that level or likely improves for the run I fancy his chances. Even at the time of writing his odds are coming under pressure so he could easily be one of the gambles on the card.

Clifton Bridge sets the standard and is the danger to all of these after an easy win at Exeter last month. He does have to carry a penalty here which makes life tougher but he is a big threat. Kingsand Bay represents Nicky Henderson and could also show up well on debut having cost €38,000 as a 3yo.
