Wincanton 1.15

This looks a great chance for DUKE OF ROCKINGHAM to return to winning ways. He ran out an impressive winner of a bumper at Uttoxeter back in October and looked a bit unlucky when beaten just a neck on hurdles debut at Lingfield. He stayed on really strongly to the line and just failed to get there. He should know a lot more now and with natural improvement can open his account over timber. The yard are back in great form too with Olly Murphy operating at a near 30% strike rate in the past fortnight.

Name In Lights failed to fire behind Constitution Hill but was a good second to Bombs Away prior to that and given a bit of time if he can bounce back he could be the danger to the favourite. Still think he needs to improve though as the selection certainly looks like he is going to. Monviel is well related but also needs to do better to land a blow here.

Wincanton 1.45

This doesn’t look a strong race with plenty of these having something to prove. The one that doesn’t is IMPHAL who has been in top form recently 11132. He is nudging up the handicaps so doesn’t look obviously well in but he is at least running to his level and will likely find more at this slightly longer trip and has to be the one to beat. The way he closed up to the line last time was eye-catching again and he should have an obvious chance in this field.

In a relatively weak race old boys Valtor and Jepeck could easily play a part if running to the level of form from last season at these trips. St Barty has been the one nibbled at in the market but he was disappointing at Chepstow so needs to bounce back switched back over hurdles this afternoon.

Imphal 2/1

Wincanton 2.15

I thought ONEUPMANSHIP was in the process of running a really nice race on chase debut at Ffos Las before coming down. He just looked to be hitting top gear and it was shame to see him take a tumble. If his confidence isn’t knocked then he may well make amends this afternoon. He jumped well in the main and with that experience under his belt he can improve again. This is quite competitive without there being a standout so it looks a good opportunity for him to bounce back.

Iron Mike has made an encouraging start to his chase career not beaten far here in November before going close on debut for this yard on penultimate start. He was beaten 8 lengths last time though so will need to better that. At a bigger price Larkbarrow Lad could run well with blinkers on.

Wincanton 2.45

A wide open handicap with plenty in with live chances. JETAWAY JOEY was on a hat-trick last time out at Ascot when putting in a below par run. His jockey that day said he ran too free which explains that run. Aidan Coleman is back onboard after being on him for his last two wins and I expect him to go very close here off 122.

At at each way price I am going to have a saver on MIDNIGHT MIDGE back over hurdles. He lost a shoe on his last run which is why he tailed off. The handicapper subsequently dropped him a further 2lb and he could be over priced here. The danger to the selections looks to be Colin Tizzard’s gelding Whydah Gally who has been running well and should be involved off the same mark as his last run.

Wincanton 3.15

Point winner AKI BOMAYE could be ready to strike here for Tizzard and Powell. He only ran twice over hurdles last year finishing in the placings on both occasions. He had a wind op over the summer and has run two promising races over fences so far this winter. He was well backed when a good second on chase debut and probably stepped forward in defeat again when beaten just 3 and a half lengths at Huntingdon last month. He is still learning his trade and with further improvement should get competitive here.

The danger is probably Velasco who was a good second at Taunton and is only up 4lb. Poppa Poutine is likeable but does need to bounce back. Pennyforapound is also interesting stepping back up in trip here. It’s still early days so he should have a future in this sphere.

Wincanton 3.15

Aki Bomaye 6/1

Wincanton 3.50

This should be a really good race with the top 3/4 in the market having solid chances. VALUE TIP has impressed me the way he has gone up the handicap starting at 97 and improving with every run to now be rated 121. He is still improving as you can see in the way he finishes off his races, especially his last two and I think he could have another win in him now up another 6lb.

Destinee Royale is the main danger on her form last season. She fell on her seasonal debut at Cheltenham as she isn’t the best jumper but should be a bit easier around Wincanton. She can clearly win a race off this mark but has to jump better on ground that could be faster than she wants.

Wincanton 4.20

A bumper to conclude the card at Wincanton on Thursday and GETAWAY TOM could be a nice bit of value against the favourite. This son of Getaway cost €72,000 and is bred to be pretty useful. It will be interesting to see how he handles the prelims with not a single horse in the line-up having appeared on a racetrack. The yard are just 1-10 with newcomers in bumpers in the last 12 months which is a bit worrying but if he looks the part 4/1 might look too big come post time.

The favourite is Twin Power for Paul Nicholls. He only cost €25,000 though and he is related to some more staying types so might be doing his best work late. Rosy Redrum has been backed and the yard are 2-9 with debutants in the past year so she has to be respected. More of a race for trackers at the ready rather than getting too deeply involved from a betting perspective.
