Kelso 1.50

A tricky opener at Kelso on Thursday but I think KAIZER ticks enough boxes to make him a play. He took a tumble at Musselburgh but was quickly back on track finishing fifth here just after Christmas. He built on that to finish an excellent second at Newcastle last month. He is just 2lb higher here and in a winnable race should be in with a major shout. He will likely be on or up with the pace and should be in the box seat to strike.

The one that has been backed this morning is Dequall with 7lb claimer Peter Kavanagh booked for the ride. He has been eased another 2lb and ran better when third at Newcastle so if returning to that form would definitely have a shout. Milvale is another one who could get competitive in a race that lacks strength in depth.

Kelso 2.20

This doesn’t look the best race with plenty of these not showing too much promise over hurdles so far. GINGER MAIL gets a narrow vote after a good run on hurdles debut at Ayr last month. He also showed some talent in national hunt Flat races before that so I expect him to be the one to beat in a poor race. He is bred to be above-average so it’ll be disappointing if he can’t get seriously competitive.

Bella Bluesky has won a bumper and ran well at Newcastle over hurdles last month. She is very hit or miss though that is why she is passed over for the selection. Domandlouis has been nibbled at but he looks more of a staying type so he might find this all happening a bit too quickly to get seriously competitive.

Kelso 2.50

Hard to rule any of these out with confidence but I can see MOUNT MELLERAY running well. He is yet to show a huge amount but does have bits and pieces of good form over fences in Ireland and he wasn’t disgraced when fourth over hurdles on first start for this yard last month. He should strip fitter and back over fences remains open to improvement. They all have a bit to prove in here so 4/1 looks too big.

En Meme Temps has knocked on the door the last twice and was only beaten 5 lengths at Sedgefield. He looks the biggest threat I think. Without Conviction has been a drifter this morning but she still has potential so shouldn’t be entirely overlooked off the back of that third at Newcastle. She looks undone by the slow pace that day.

Kelso 3.20

A wide open race with all 5 runners having a good chance of winning here. SWORD OF FATE could be a bigger price than he should be based on a poor run last time. He was in a better race on softer ground last time so he should be far better on quicker ground at this level. He was in good form before that run and I think he could be a big player off this mark. I’m surprised he is the rank outsider of the field at the time of writing.

Lucky Flight will be the main danger if replicating his last run on this quicker surface now running off 111. Dubai Days is another who has better form on softer ground and if it isn’t too quick will go well. Peterborough should enjoy going back over fences so could also run well especially given how winnable this looks.

Kelso 3.50

This looks a good chance for NOTEBOOK to finally get his head in front. He was only beaten 2 and a half lengths on debut for his new yard at Ayr last month and with this step back up in trip likely to suit I think he can win this. He needs things to drop right but it wouldn’t surprise me if Brian Hughes was prominent on him as I think he is a horse that needs to be kept interested throughout.

Firth Of Forth ran on well when second at Newcastle last time but that was just his third start over hurdles so he does lack experience. River Meadow goes up in trip for hurdle debut and could also run well but again should fare better for the outing. So They Say won her sole start in points but I think she’d only be of serious interest if heavily backed.

Kelso 4.20

A good handicap to cap off the card at Kelso and I think FAMOUS BRIDGE is the one they all have to beat. All of his 4 runs have been good especially his last 3 with 2 seconds and a win. He has been allocated a mark of 117 on his handicap debut which looks more than fair and he should take advantage if in the same form. He is being heavily backed at the time of writing which has to be reassuring.

Aurora Thunder won well at Musselburgh last month and that form makes her the main danger but she is off a career-high mark now so it won’t be easy. With Elvis Mail out Voix Du Reve could prove best of the rest but has work to do to reverse recent form with the latter. Ashington is so inconsistent but has to be respected if on a ‘going day’ here.
