Sandown 1.50

This looks a really good handicap hurdle with horses that are capable of running Graded races in here. I found it hard to split two of these so have backed KNAPPERS HILL and will have a saver on the other. Knappers Hill back down to 2 miles after his only bad run came at Sandown over further is ideal here. He won a Novice race last weekend easily so likely has plenty more to come for Paul Nicholls who is in good form and won this race 2 years ago.

I am having a saver on DOCTOR PARNASSUS at an each way price as I think he can at least make the frame. He won his first two over hurdles with ease before finishing midfield in a hot renewal of the Triumph. He will likely run a big race now in calmer waters. Of the rest Head Law looks the danger to the selections after stringing a hat-trick together but does have to prove himself at this level.

Haydock 2.05

I thought BOARDMAN would be clear favourite for this so he looks a bit of value at around 11/2 at the time of writing. He needed his first run of the season last year before bringing up a hat-trick of wins so I’m hoping it’s the same this time around. He shaped with plenty of encouragement when fourth on return at Redcar and if he builds on that he has to be involved off the same mark here. His run style always requires a bit of luck in-running as he likes to pass horses late but if he gets the gaps he should go close.

The danger may be Rhoscolyn who also caught the eye to some extent on return when third behind Mutasaabeq at Thirsk. He went off the front but stuck to the task when headed and the pair that beat him are both nice enough types. He will strip fitter and could run a big race. Oo De Lally has had a wind op and is another one that catches the eye to some extent.

Sandown 2.25

Another really small field for the Oaksey Chase which is sad to see. It is a muddling race with plenty of questions to answer including the favourite Mister Fisher who has disappointed badly on his last two runs. This is a bit of an easier contest but I can’t back him at 13/8 to bounce back.

Saint Calvados looks a bit stuck between trips with form over this trip and 3 miles but is hard to catch right. Nuts Well is interesting back down in trip if he can repeat the form behind Allmankind early in the season. That leaves me with ERNE RIVER who was travelling into the race nicely at Aintree before being hampered and falling. He had won his previous 4 starts and was well backed for the Manifesto and I think he is a good price to put it right here.

Leicester 2.45

I was a big fan of ARATUS last season and I’m hopeful he can continue his race-by-race progression here before going on to better things. Some decent enough horses have won this down the years and I think he can make into a nice enough horse in time. He is unbeaten since finishing second on debut and showed a great attitude to fend off Escobar at Goodwood on final start as a 3yo. He would have strengthened up and with just 2 rivals to beat can make a winning return.

Path Of Thunder is odds-on for Appleby and Buick but looks one of the worst bets of the weekend to me. He is a useful horse but who knows if he is going to be over those Meydan excursions and I’d rather take him on. Happy Power looks the danger but he hasn’t won for a while which has to be concerning.

Sandown 3.00

Just the 5 go to post for the Celebration Chase which is a shame as it’s a £160,000 pot. It does look a good race with last years winner GREANETEEN looking like a good bet in this. He didn’t run his race at Leopardstown (had a graze and tailed off) but his form around Sandown is very good. He beat Nube Negra by 12 lengths here in December which is a lot to turnaround so I was surprised to see them joint favourites at the time of writing. If he is in the same form he wins this.

Nube Negra missed Cheltenham due to the ground which leaves him without a run since that race in December so although he is a big danger I fancy the selection to hold form. Sceau Royal is always interesting at this level but might find the top two too good and certainly isn’t getting any younger.

Sandown 3.32

Like many I was blown away with how WIN MY WINGS won the Scottish Grand National. She travelled into it hard on the bridle and in a matter of strides put the race to bed. She had any amount in hand of the handicapper so a 14lb rise is fully warranted. This will be some performance to back that up off top weight but I’m not prepared to oppose her and at 11/2 she looks a great bet. I can actually see the Scottish Grand National form playing out and Christian Williams saddling the 1-2 again as Kitty’s Light still looks on the upgrade as well.

The penny finally looks to have dropped with Flegmatik so I’d put him forward as the main danger to the pair mentioned above. He is up 9lb from that Kempton win though and still needs to prove he will see this marathon trip out. Musical Slave is another one on a hat-trick and impressed with how he beat Enqarde and Bavington Bob at Haydock. I think he’ll be bang there at the finish as well in a fiercely competitive renewal.
