Wincanton 1.30

A big field of 14 head to post for the ITV opener which is refreshing to see. I’m going to take a chance on MIDNIGHT CALLISTO building on that one-length second at Taunton last month. She stuck to the task really well once headed and the front pair pulled 10 lengths clear from the third. Connections have reached for first-time cheekpieces and if they help sharpen her up she should be a danger to all here with Ben Godfrey claiming a handy 5lb. I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of her and I’m convinced she’ll be bang there at the finish in this field.

Pittsburg is favourite at the time of writing and while he improved to win at Catterick he only just scrambled home and up 6lb he’ll need more to follow up. Planned Paradise is my idea of the danger having took a step forward to make all at Newcastle. The handicapper has taken no chances raising him 11lb though which was just about enough to put me off. Of those at bigger prices Rectory Oak might do better here but certainly needs to.

Sandown 1.50

This looks like a very good renewal with plenty of quality in here. NUMITOR gets the vote with two great runs over fences on his last two outings. He won at Wetherby before finishing second at Newbury in a quality race last time. He will enjoy the testing conditions at Sandown and I would be surprised if he didn’t go close under Tom Scudamore. He is likely to go forward and might just take some pegging back with the ground on the deep side and plenty of rain forecast.

Gunsight Ridge is the favourite based on his run behind L’Homme Presse last time that is working out very well. But I think he may need the extra few furlongs rather than the minimum trip here. With that in mind Moonlighter could well be the danger with signs of the former course and distance winner coming back to form and you have to take note now he is down to 141.

Wincanton 2.05

Another good race with 9 set to head to post. I have it down to 3 or 4 and I’ve decided to take two against the field. Top-weight GREY DIAMOND looks primed to go close down in grade. He has some strong form over fences and caught the eye when third to Amoola Gold on return at Ascot. That was a race with plenty of depth in where he finished fourth at Newbury and with Jack Tudor claiming 3lb I think all looks in place for a big run. He ran well on his only start at this track over hurdles and this test looks ideal.

Belle De Manech looks the obvious danger off the back of that winning start over fences over further here last month but a 10lb rise could be harsh and I like one at a bigger price that I’m going to include as an each way saver. ANOTHER CRICK just looked to be blowing the cobwebs away back over hurdles on reappearance at Leicester last month and with this being his second start following a wind op down to a mark of just 122 he should get competitive. He reached a high of 134 this time last year so is handicapped to have a say back over fences. Desque De L’Isle also deserves a mention with Ned Fox claiming 10lb.

Sandown 2.25

Plenty of good horses have gone via the Tolworth route on to bigger things and there could be 1 or 2 in here that will play a big part at the festival. None more so than CONSTITUTION HILL who routed rivals on his hurdles debut winning by 14 lengths. He clearly has plenty more to come but based on that he is ahead of the pack here and the one to beat. His price is obviously very skinny but that is understandable given the potential he brings to the table and the yard he represents.

Of the others Shallwehaveonemore could be a danger as he has plenty of scope to step forward and could prove to be best of the rest. I think whatever happens this experience won’t be lost on him and he looks a nice horse going forward for Gary and Jamie Moore. Mr Glass has been winning well but this definitely requires more. Similar comments apply to Datsalrightgino.

Wincanton 2.40

When first looking at this race I thought Apple Rock would go well as he has shaped better than his recent form figures have suggested and down a further 2lb the handicapper is giving him a chance. There are two others I prefer though and my main bet has to be BLAIRGOWRIE for Nicky Henderson. This horse has only had 4 starts under Rules and he is still learning and maturing. He disappointing on return at Sandown but I think he needed that and he built on that when third at Uttoxeter last month. He will improve now handicapping and for me he still retains plenty of potential.

Of those at bigger prices I’m going to have an each way saver on MANVERS HOUSE back over hurdles. This horse has been pulled up the last twice over fences and is back down to a mark of 115 in this sphere. He needs to bounce back obviously but some of his old form reads well and if he revives he could run a big race at a nice price. Crossing The Bar also looms as a danger from a workable opening mark.

Sandown 3.00

Usually I would probably oppose the top-weight in this race but ASO‘s performance at Haydock behind Blaklion last month would see him more than good enough to win this even off 11 stone 12. He is clearly held in high regard as they had him contesting Graded chases for most of last year. At this level he could be very good considering he was ranked 158 last year (149 Saturday). Charlie Deutsch is riding with supreme confidence right now too and all looks in place for a big run.

It is a fairly good renewal so there are a few dangers. Wandering Star who improved for a wind-op and could have more improvement after that win and The Kings Writ back up in trip off 133 would be the main threats. Final Nudge won a veterans’ event on return at Warwick and is also likely to get competitive in a race with strength in depth.

Wincanton 3.15

I really don’t like the top 2 in the betting here and I think they’re opposable at short enough odds. The one I fancy to bounce back is KILLER CLOWN for Emma Lavelle. This son of Getaway was progressive over fences last season with the best of his form seeing him run out an impressive winner at Kempton. He needed the run behind Allmankind at Aintree and went off too hard at Newbury last time. The handicapper has relented again and he is down another 3lb. That coupled with the fitting of a tongue-tie could see him back in the winners enclosure.

If there were 8 runners in here then I would back Notre Pari as well but because only 6 head to post I’ve left him alone and will put him down as the main danger. He travelled strongly when second at Carlisle and while the winner hasn’t gone on from that since it was still a good effort and if he bounces back from that Cheltenham run he could prove himself well handicapped. Stolen Silver doesn’t always put it all in and Mont Des Avaloirs can be let down by his jumping.

Sandown 3.35

A good race to cap off the card at Sandown and MACK THE MAN is the selection here. He won on his seasonal reappearance and should improve for that run. He has won over course and distance before and I thought he would be vying for favouritism so the bigger price looks good value as he should go well. I’ve probably spotted the best bet of the entire day on him to finish in the top 3 at evens so I’ve added a link for that below as well. I can’t see him not going close!

Hermes Boy is clear favourite at the time of writing and he probably has a fair bit to come but I have sided with the experience of the selection here. Natural History is clearly talented but he has a tendency to let supporters down and even edging down the weights I wouldn’t be completely sold by him as he can pull his chance away and is likely testing ground that’s not going to be ideal.
