Newbury – race-by-race preview
7 races from Newbury this afternoon and here you will find an in-depth preview of every race on the card. We will explain why we like our selection in detail plus list any main dangers.
Newbury 2.10 Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle
Le Grand Fromage was my starting point here and while I think he’ll go well up in trip for handicap debut I realise he isn’t the most straightforward and can pull his chance away. I’ve passed him over on this occasion but he’s definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on today and going forward. ALNADAM is the one I’ve come down on for Dan Skelton and William Marshall. He has taken a bit of a drift this morning but I’m still confident of a big run. He stepped up on his hurdling debut to win at Uttoxeter in November and struggled under a penalty last time. This longer trip looks ideal and he is open to improvement so I expect him to hit the frame at least. Others to note include Iconic Muddle and Pemberley in a competitive opener.
Newbury 2.45 Juvenile Hurdle
Monte Cristo should win this as the odds reflect but I thought it might be worth taking a chance on HIGHWAY TO SUCCESS here for Suzi Best and Tom Scudamore. He was a decent animal on the Flat for Gordon Elliott and has slowly got the hang of it over hurdles, winning on handicap bow at Wincanton in November. He has since performed creditably in defeat and his saddle slipped last time so that run can be excused. Obviously he will need the fav to underperform but at the prices thought he might be worth a small play. The fav finished fourth behind Galahad Quest at Cheltenham, form which is working out really well, but he looks to have been overbet here and may prove vulnerable.
Newbury 3.15 Novices’ Handicap Chase
Financial Outcome was going well when making a shuddering error at Uttoxeter last time and he’ll no doubt have his backers again here but for me he is a frustrating sort and you can’t guarantee he isn’t going to make an error like that again. 5/2 is on the skinny side so he’s worth taking on in my opinion. INDIAN BRAVE was rewarded for his consistency when getting off the mark over fences at Chepstow last time and looks the type to have more to offer in this discipline. He is up 6lb but makes plenty of appeal to me and I can’t see how he doesn’t go close. Hey Bud is the mover in the market but he unseated last time and has a bit to prove to win this. Pres is probably the one I fear most.
Newbury 3.50 Novices’s Hurdle
I was on ERITAGE when he was beaten at Taunton and while it was a bit disappointing on the day given the price he went off looking back he has bumped into a very smart horse in Masters Legacy. He has since followed up in good style so the form has a strong look to it. The selection sets a clear standard on that and the step up in trip is expected to suit as long as he can settle early. It Sure Is looks the unknown quantity in the race and is feared most. The money continues to pour in for the Nicky Henderson runner but the good thing is it makes our Notebook runner a bigger price and I’m still confident we’re on the right one. Brinkley is another to note as he ran a promising race when third at Punchestown (behind Blue Sari) and has since joined David Pipe.
Newbury 4.20 Handicap Hurdle
Tambura was my initial selection in this race at an each way price as I found it tricky to analyse but with her now a non runner I’ve weighed in with the Alan King-trained FORGETTHESMALLTALK. He ran a monster race back from a 584-day absence at Kempton in November and could improve plenty now. It was a performance that can probably be marked up as he was given a lot to do too and was closing at the line. This is obviously extremely competitive but if he takes a step forward he is sure to go close. Roccowithlove improved to finish second on handicap debut at Wincanton and was still travelling when falling heavily at Catterick. He’ll need to put that behind him but is definitely a danger. Mister Murchan bumped into Flowing Cadenza at Ascot before winning at Plumpton and held his form again when second last time so is also entitled to be in the mix.

Newbury 5.25 Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race
I find bumpers tricky at the best of times and this one doesn’t look any easier. DIDONATO left her debut run behind when finishing fourth at Ludlow last month and with further progress on the cards should figure. 8/1 looks a decent each way price so it’s worth a bet. Like I said though it’s not a race to be overconfident in. The Kicking Queen is probably the other one that catches my eye as she is closely related to 3 winners including the talented The Dutchman and bumper winner The Pirate’s Queen. Alan King fires 3 darts at this race so has a strong hand. Grand Luna is favourite but probably worth taking on at the price. Whiskey Lullaby is hard to discount as well.
