Best bets in Australia in the early hours of Thursday morning
We’ve had a good look at the Australian racing overnight with the focus on Wangaratta and Pakenham. We’ve also covered Wyong, Goulburn and Pinjarra with 38 races to get stuck into.

Race 6 Pakenham 11.00 Hamslette (6/4)
Strong pace should suit this mare here as she was just caught out dropping back in trip last time, running on strongly to finish second; peaking now and note the step back up to 1400m a big positive; Ben Melham booked for the ride.
It will be disappointing if HAMSLETTE can’t get the job done here. She is a likeable mare who ran very well when a closing second at Kyneton last month. The step back in trip probably just caught her out but she was strong at the line and the extra yardage here should prove ideal. They won’t hang about here and I can see her finishing powerfully under Ben Melham. Taberna got her head back in front last time returning from a year off the track but will need more to trouble the favourite. Even still rates the main threat.

Race 5 Wangaratta 6.00 Motakhayyel (6/4)
Promise amidst greenness when down the field on debut at Morphettville Parks in August last year; clearly possesses a lot of ability and if he’s filled out and learns to settle here he should prove a class above these; been gelded.
It’s worth noting how strong MOTAKHAYYEL is proving in the betting here. He has only raced once and pulled his chance away but given time since and having undergone a gelding operation we could see a different animal here. He could easily be in a different league to these so he’s taken to open his account. Olympic Power is also open to plenty of improvement and should figure in the finish along with Jet Jackson who has experience on side and probably sets the standard for the others to aim at.
