Newmarket 1.50 Betway Handicap (6f)
Great to have racing back on ITV and we kick off the action with a confident bet in the 6f handicap at Newmarket. SWINDLER has won two of his last three and really impressed me on final start at Ascot. He overhauled a progressive sort in Alkaraama so the form looks worth following. He is up 6lb but would have strengthened up over the winter and could easily improve again.
Dazzling Dan is a likeable sort who looked a very smart sprinter scoring over C&D last summer. He finished midfield in the Portland and then shaped well behind Tinto on final start at Ascot. He could have more to come too so rates the main danger. Others to note include the ultra-consistent Summerghand and at a bigger price Gulliver who would be a danger to all if putting it altogether.
Lingfield 2.05 Betsafe Handicap (7f1y)
This looks a fairly open handicap on paper however I think it revolves around the top 3 in the handicap. Our selection CORVAIR has been brought along slowly by Simon Crisford and is going for a 4-timer as a result. His times on the clock rate the best on offer and he should be bang there. I’m not overly concerned by stall 11 as he likes to be held up.
The main rivals Tomfree and Verboten must be well thought of to be contesting group races last season and if they are fully wound up they will also be coming home late off what looks a strong pace.
Newmarket 2.25 Betway Abernant Stakes (Group 3) (6f)
It’s hard to oppose BRANDO here for Kevin Ryan. He is another year older but probably isn’t done yet and he showed that running a huge race in the Prix Maurice de Gheest in France last summer. This is obviously much calmer waters than what he’s used to so I expect him to win this before taking a shot at the July Cup again.
The younger legs of Oxted looks the main danger. He has some strong form in the book and ended his 3yo campaign with a gutsy success in the Portland at Doncaster. He is definitely a threat and should go well under Cieren Fallon. Keystroke won this last year but the race rather fell in his lap. He is still respected though.
Lingfield 2.40 Betsafe Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed) (1m31/2f)
Not the best Oaks Trial Lingfield Park has seen but John Gosden might have one that can compete at the big day at Epsom. MISS YODA is clear on ratings and her Group 3 second behind Max Vega is good form as he didn’t run that badly yesterday in a decent race at Kempton. She is proven on the surface as well having won on it on debut and she will be tough to beat.
Her stablemate Lake Lucerne will have more to come for sure however it is hard to know if she is on the level of Miss Yoda currently. West End Girl might be the one to put it up to our selection if seeing out the trip as all wins have been at 7 furlongs.
Newmarket 3.00 Betway Paradise Stakes (Listed) (1m)
I was looking forward to seeing Kingman colt Sangarius out again for Sir Michael Stoute but he is a late non runner and that’s blow the race wide open. He is engaged to run at Haydock at the weekend though so keep an eye on that.
The race has a nice each way appeal now and I can see MOMKIN running well for William Haggas. He is a strong looking colt by Bated Breath and he recorded some smart efforts in defeat last season for Roger Charlton and might improve again now for his new yard. Century Dream would be a big danger if getting back to his best this season. A bit disappointing last term but has had a wind op since. Might be best watched for now but one to keep on the radar.
Lingfield 3.15 Betsafe Derby Trial Stakes (Listed) (1m31/2f)
Like the Oaks Trial this isn’t the best race for a Derby Trial and bar a lot of improvement I can’t see any of this field winning the Derby. That said BERKSHIRE ROCCO ran in the race Miss Yoda ran in behind Max Vega and the step up in trip should bring out more from him. Trainer Andrew Balding is flying currently and you would expect him to be ready to go for this and then hopefully on to the Derby.
The other one I really like in this race is English King as I think he has the most improvement to come after finishing last season with an easy win at Newcastle which looks solid with the second and third winning since. He may prove the best in this field further down the line but I think the experience of the selection will show today.
Newmarket 3.35 Coronation Cup (Group 1) (1m4f)
The feature race of the day now with 7 classy animals heading to post. Aidan O’Brien sends over Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck as he looks to get his career back on track. Last year’s winner Defoe also lines up as well as Gosden’s winning machine Stradivarius. I respect all of them but it’s hard to get away from GHAIYYATH for Charlie Appleby. When things go to plan this horse has quite simply looked a freak and that’s exactly what happened in the Dubai Millennium Stakes at Meydan in February. He trounced the field by over 8 lengths and barely broke a sweat. He is obviously meeting a different calibre of opposition here but a soft lead looks on the cards and if Buick gets him into a rhythm I don’t think they’ll see which way he goes. He is 2-2 on this track and the quick ground will be right up his street. Hard to beat.
Stradivarius doesn’t know how to run a bad race and had a streak of ten wins prior to missing out by a nose to Kew Gardens in the Long Distance Cup. He is a danger but this trip is on the short side for him now and that might just catch him out on this occasion. I think last year’s winner Defoe will put up the most resistance. He is a high-class sort who will run his race. I can’t see any of them catching the favourite though.
