Royal Ascot 1.15 Golden Gates Handicap (1m2f)
A new handicap to kick-off day 3 of the Royal meeting and there could be a few nice horses in here. We could even see one or two progress to run in The Derby. The form of HYPOTHETICAL’s comeback run is as solid as it comes with Pyledriver winning the King Edward VII stakes and Berlin Tango the winner that day running really well in third in the Hampton Court Stakes giving away 4lb. Thady Gosden (son of the trainer) said he would have needed the run and normal improvement should mean he is hard to beat in this.
Acquitted was just beaten by the very well thought of Palace Pier and is probably the main danger but the Gosden yard should have a good line on him.
Royal Ascot 1.50 Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race) (1m2f)
The classy Addeybb took this last year for William Haggas. The yard don’t have a runner this year sadly. I’ve sided with the progressive FOX TAL for Andrew Balding. The stable tasted Royal Ascot success with the impressive Tactical in the Windsor Castle and could be set for another winner here. This scopey colt by Sea The Stars is likely still improving and he was last seen running a cracker in the Champion Stakes behind Magical, Addeybb and Deirdre. He can be keen like he was the last day so I’d like to see him settle but if he does I think he’ll win. This is a drop in grade obviously being a Listed race and I think he is a very solid favourite at around 3/1.
Sir Dragonet is an impressive looking individual but the fact of the matter is he has proved a bit frustrating and I can’t bring myself to back him again. The stable have been a bit hit and miss with their runners too in recent times. Both Mogul and Japan were bitterly disappointing. I’d put forward Regal Reality as the biggest danger for Sir Michael Stoute. If they can keep a lid on him in the prelims and he bounces back to that Sandown form he will run well.
Royal Ascot 2.25 Jersey Stakes (Group 3) (7f)
A good mix of runners in this from those with potential to improve a lot and horses that have run at the top level already in various Guineas. We will be siding with KING LEONIDAS who impressed on his comeback run at Newmarket giving 7lb to the field and beating Eastern World by just over two lengths. Eastern World was well fancied that day so it is worth marking that performance up. If the expected improvement from the first run comes he should be right there.
Aidan O’Brien has won this race with horses dropping back from the Guineas trip so Monarch Of Egypt has to be noted but I actually think Celestin coming in from the French Guineas will be the main danger.
Royal Ascot 3.00 Chesham Stakes (Listed Race) (7f)

Royal Ascot 3.35 Gold Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (2m4f)
This surely revolves around the champ STRADIVARIUS who bids to join an elite group in Yeats and Sagaro who are the only horses to have won this race more that twice. He has had a prep race where he wasn’t given a hard time and should be setup to make it a third Gold Cup win. At the current price he is a watch and enjoy type horse but I wouldn’t put you off adding him to any day 3 accumalators.
Cross Counter was a close fourth last year but I’m not sure he is in the same vein of form and shouldn’t be reversing the placings. Technician is improving the further he goes up in trip and if seeing it out will likely follow the champ home. He’s a horse I’ve always liked so hopefully runs a big race – might be worth a bet in the without the favourite market.
Royal Ascot 4.10 Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (1m)
Finest Sound will be popular here following his impressive win at Haydock following a 247-day absence and a wind op. A 5lb penalty doesn’t look too taxing but he has been well found in the market now and might be worth opposing. I’ve decided to take 3 against the field. My most confident selection is VERBOTEN for John Gosden. This No Nay Never colt made a winning debut at Yarmouth before finding the Futurity Trophy coming too soon on his next start. He wasn’t disgraced but could never land a blow. He caught the eye doing all his best work late on return, beaten just a length by Ziggle Pops at Lingfield. The return to a mile will suit and he can improve. He also has a high draw which has proved beneficial over the first couple of days. Big run expected and at a decent price!
My second play in the race is GROVE FERRY. His form ties in with the latter as he finished third in that race shaping as though this sort of test would prove ideal. I can’t believe he is 25/1 here. I expect that will get backed overnight. He won two of his three as a 2yo and always looked a longer term project. Got to go close.
Finally Roger Varian hit the board yesterday with the impressive Fujaira Prince and he has KHALOOSY in this. It’s a bit of a guessing game as to whether he can fire fresh back from a 208-day absence but the turn of foot he showed at Wolverhampton was very impressive and if he has improved and acts on turf then he is one to keep firmly on side. 12/1 too good to pass up so I’ve included him too. Make sure you take advantage of the extra places on offer.
Royal Ascot 4.10
Verboten 8/1 each way
Khaloosy 12/1 each way
Grove Ferry 25/1 each way
Royal Ascot 4.40 Sandringham Stakes (Handicap) (1m)
A 3yo Fillies Handicap to wrap up the card on Day 3 and there is one that jumps off the page. AFRICAN DREAM was only beaten a nose a week ago by a Group placed horse rated 106 whilst giving it 7lb as well which makes it more extraordinary. She is now 16lb well in plus any improvement that run would have brought out of her.
She will be hard to beat but the main dangers are made up of Declared Interest who has solid form and is 4lb well in and I quite like Soffika to run a place.
ITV Racing Win Trixie
6 races live on ITV Racing from Royal Ascot on Thursday and we have placed a Win Trixie on our three most confident selections of the day!
