Newcastle 1.50 Chipchase Stakes (Group 3)
Hopefully it will be a good start for punters in the opening race live on ITV Racing on Saturday. MUBAKKER was an impressive winner over C&D on return, staying on strongly to see off a good field and could take the step up in class in his stride. He is a colt firmly on the upgrade and I don’t want to oppose. Value hunters will be trying to find one at a price given he is untested at this level but I was taken with what I saw last time and 5/2 seems fair if he improves again.
Chiefofchiefs had his day in the sun winning the Silver Wokingham at Royal Ascot last week. Could run a place at a price but you’d be surprised if he managed to follow up. Major Jumbo chased home Far Above in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last time and can step forward as the main danger to the selection.
Newmarket 2.05 Betway Handicap
The likely favourite in this Boccaccio may have plenty to come but hasn’t had a run since November so he is worth opposing with something at a bigger price. MANIGORDO has solid form and he should come on for his easy win at Sandown two weeks ago. He ended last season with a run in a Group 3 so they clearly think a bit of this horse and Ryan Moore booked to ride is a big positive.
Bar the favourite Raatea could be a danger but he seems to have been better on the All Weather so far.
Newcastle 2.25 Gosforth Park Cup Handicap
Magical Spirit was undoubtedly impressive at Beverley and comes here with a major chance but for me he has the profile to take on with an 8lb hike for that and I’ve gone for one at a bit of value. EL HOMBRE finished third in this last year, only beaten a length and he is 2lb lower now. He hasn’t been seen since winning by a head at Wolverhampton in March and has likely been targeted for this since after the unexpected break in racing. 10/1 is cracking each way value in my book and I think he’s going to run a big race!
Fool For You won it last year so is respected (form line with the selection). She can be a lazy sort though and is 3lb higher this time round which makes her 5lb worse-off with the selection. She didn’t shape badly behind the impressive Que Amoro last time though so isn’t ruled out. Copper Knight was so unlucky not to win at Newmarket and then ran a solid race in defeat at Doncaster. Could run a big race as well.
Newmarket 2.40 Criterion Stakes (Group 3)
Two previous winners of the race in the field in Limato and Sir Dancelot and they both have a chance but their wins came after plenty of runs, so both might just need the run. HAPPY POWER at a decent each way price is our selection in the race. He ran well behind Space Blues in a very good Listed event on his comeback and if coming on from that he should be bang there.
Vale Of Kent ran well at Ascot and comes back in trip, he could be the main danger of the fitter horses.
Newcastle 3.00 Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3)
Sticking with the unbeaten ALOE VERA for Ralph Beckett. This Invincible Spirit filly has only met the racetrack twice but has impressed both starts and ran out a taking winner at Goodwood last time. She obviously hasn’t been the easiest to train given we haven’t seen her for 401 days but if the ability retains and she is fit and ready to go she should prove a cut above these. She remains unexposed and this trip looks ideal. I’m looking forward to seeing her run!
Virgin Snow won with a bit up her sleeve at Haydock last time and receives plenty of weight from her elders so has to be feared. Definitely a filly going the right way but hopefully she is just bumping into one here.
Newmarket 3.15 Fairway Stakes (Listed)
All of these look open to plenty of progress especially Ryan Moore’s mount Thunderous who has won 3/3 but my only doubt is that he hasn’t been seen since August and in a decent field it may pay to have ran this year. We are siding with VOLKAN STAR who ran well in a good race over course and distance to finish second. The time of the race was good and a run at a similar level could be good enough to take this.
We did fancy Man Of The Night on his return when stepping up in trip but the top two in the market are likely to prove better than him.
Newcastle 3.35 Northumberland Plate Handicap
Really looking forward to this! Who Dares Wins won this last year for Alan King and the yard saddle RAINBOW DREAMER this year. He is 5-6 on the AW and was last seen running creditably in fourth behind Nayef Road 3 weeks ago. He can step forward from that and looks right in the mix under Hollie Doyle. He isn’t my main selection in the race but I had to include him as a saver as 8/1 is too big to pass up.
SMART CHAMPION is my main hope in the race. This improving stayer finished his race off in good style in the Ascot Stakes and if this doesn’t come too soon I think he’ll go close. He bolted up over C&D in February and everything points to a big run here. He will need the gaps but I think he’ll be finishing best of all. Just depends if he is within reach turning in. Plenty of dangers in a race of this nature but Carnwennan should be thereabouts and both Caravan Of Hope and Australis look promising and that recent Wolverhampton form looks solid.
Newcastle 3.35
Smart Champion 15/2 each way
Rainbow Dreamer 8/1 each way saver
Curragh 4.45 Alleged Stakes (Group 3)
Tough race which revolves around SIR DRAGONET who I usually try and oppose but I am finding it hard in this as he is getting 3lb from market rival Buckhurst and if they don’t get too much rain he should be hard to beat. It was too soft at Royal Ascot last week. The fact he is turning out so quickly suggests he is in good order and the one to beat.
Buckhurst and Latrobe are the dangers but both are giving weight away to the selection who comes out well in the weights as a result.
Curragh 5.45 Celebration Stakes (Listed)
Jessica Harrington has been in great form since the restart and ANCIENT SPEAR is going for back-to-back wins after a tight win at Navan in a Listed race. Shane Foley rides again and will be hard to pass in-front especially if improving for that run.
Bowerman is in flying form and will be the main danger based on his win in handicap company last time out. This represents another step up though so he has it to prove at the moment albeit he was very impressive the last day.
Curragh 6.45 First Flier Stakes (Listed)
FRENETIC was well fancied on debut and won very nicely for Ger Lyons who is absolutely flying currently. Mooneista was fifth that day and since put in a good second at Tipperary franking the form and does re-oppose today at a double-figure price. The selection should improve a lot from the run and will be tough to beat.
The main danger is Chief Little Hawk who was drawn on the wrong side at Royal Ascot and should go close but has to give our selection 5lb.
Curragh 7.15 Irish Derby (Group 1)
Aidan O’Brien took this last year with 33/1 chance Sovereign. He saddles six runners this year but his main hope looks to be the highly promising SANTIAGO. This colt looked to be going places winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot 8 days ago and if he keeps improving he will win this as he is already the highest rated horse in the field off the back of that. I think 3/1 is too big and he is my best bet not just on the card but of the entire day. He obviously stays further so will be galloping on relentlessly when the others have cried enough.
Stablemate Arthur’s Kingdom didn’t go unbacked in the King Edward VII but never really got competitive despite finishing just two lengths off the winner in second. They think a fair bit of him and I think he’ll step forward again so he could emerge as the main danger. Could easily be a 1-2 for the master trainer. Crossfirehurricane showed a real likeable attitude to prevail again last time and remain unbeaten. Up in trip again so needs to stay but respected. Fiscal Rules should suit this sort of test so also comes into the reckoning in terms of a place. I think the fav can win this though and looks the right price to do so.
Curragh 7.45 Vintage Crop Stakes (Group 3)
Twilight Payment kicked clear at Leopardstown the last day but was quickly reeled in and brushed aside by Nickajack Cave. It wasn’t a bad effort but for me I want to take him on here. Looks way too short to me. Master Of Reality was last seen finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup. Clearly very talented but hasn’t been seen for 236 days so may need the run.
Now I know I’m going to sound a bit hypocritical given SOVEREIGN hasn’t been seen himself for 364 days but I just think he is worth chancing from a shrewd yard. He was last seen winning the Irish Derby from subsequent Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and while it’s a bit of a guessing game regarding his wellbeing they should have him ready to fire and in a race where you can pick holes in the opposition he might just be worth chancing.
ITV Racing Win Trixie
Given there are 7 races live on ITV Racing on Saturday we have placed a Win Trixie on our three most confident selections of the day (including our selection in the Irish Derby which isn’t on terrestrial TV sadly).
ITV Racing Each Way Double
Here you can find our Each Way Double for the races live on ITV on Saturday. These are two horses we fancy strongly at decent prices to make a big double.
