Newbury 1.50 Denford Stakes (Listed Race) 7f

A fiercely competitive renewal of this Listed race and GURU gets a tentative vote for John Gosden and Adam Kirby. This colt by Kingman made the perfect start learning on the job before staying on strongly to win on debut. The whip wasn’t needed on that occasion and he looks open to any amount of improvement. This is obviously tougher so he will need to pull out more but I think I want to keep him on side. Dhahbi also impressed on debut and is by Frankel. He holds multiple Group-race entries and looks the obvious danger.

Both Jumby and Francesco Guardi cannot be ruled out either. The latter got on top close home to make a winning start at Salisbury and while the form has been knocked there was a lot to like visually. William Bligh needs the heavens to open to enter the equation. Definitely an intriguing race and it will be trackers at the ready!

Newmarket 2.05 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap (Class 4) 1m4f

Interesting handicap with plenty of the favoured runners having a few questions to answer so I am siding with ZUBA who is a model of consistency. After a string of placed efforts I think this race could be run to suit and with another run like his second over C&D two weeks ago he should be bang there at a decent each-way price.

Boss Power could be the best horse in the field after an impressive win on handicap debut, but he does still have to prove himself over this trip so I’m happy with our selection who sees it out well at four times the price.

Newbury 2.25 Unibet You’re On Handicap (Class 2) 1m

I’m happy to give AFAAK a big shout here following his promising third in the Golden Mile at Goodwood last month. His current mark doesn’t look beyond him and I think we’re set for another big effort here. If he gets the gaps at the right time he will go close under Jim Crowley. He has opted to ride him over Jahbath who looks progressive so that says a lot too.

Given the competitiveness of the race I’ve also backed ORBAAN at a bigger price. This Invincible Spirit gelding looked good winning at York and probably improved to finish fourth over the same C&D last time. Definitely a big player off the back of that and has to be backed at an each way price. Plenty of dangers with Tempus heading the list.

Newmarket 2.40 Betway Handicap (Class 3) 7f

This race is usually won by horses at the top end of the weights and KARIBANA looks a decent bet to go in again. He is on a hat-trick after an easy win over C&D and based on that performance a 6lb penalty doesn’t look enough to stop him winning again.

The favourite at the time of writing is Broughtons Gold who has been running really well and even though he has won at 7 furlongs he has put up his best performances at 6 furlongs so I much prefer our selection at a slightly bigger price.

Initially when looking at this I thought Morando would be hard to beat but when I saw the odds I thought he was short enough off the back of that laboured run at Ascot. Clearly he will be sharper now as that was his first run for 258 days but he needs the ground to come up soft to be at his best and I just think it might be worth taking him on. Alignak is promising but has to prove his worth on turf so I’ve taken a chance on one at a price.

MAX VEGA looks too big at 14/1! He looked extremely promising winning the Zetland as a 2yo and while he hasn’t managed to land a blow in two starts to date since returning I still think he has potential and at a double-figure price he is worth chancing in a race like this. The rain will also help him so hopefully conditions do deteriorate a bit. I can see Harry Bentley getting him settled before producing him late. Communique and Tritonic are expected to put good pace to the race which should help.

Newmarket 3.15 Betway Grey Horse Handicap (Class 4) 6f

I do love a grey horse but it does feel strange running a whole field of grey horses only. So strange in-fact Jonathan Portman entered two bay horses in the field not realising the restrictions (they have now been removed from the race). This is a race regularly targeted by owners of greys and CASE KEY is the prime example winning 2 of the last 3 renewals. He looks to have a great chance again after a win at Leicester and a recent second at Yarmouth he should take all the beating again.

Noel Meade’s Clareyblue looks to be the main danger with blinkers bringing out a bit of improvement.

Looking forward to this one! Our best bet runs in this in the shape of DREAM OF DREAMS for Sir Michael Stoute. This likeable chestnut went mightily close in a Group 1 on return and on that form he should win this down into a Group 2. He is the class angle in the race and should appreciate going back up to 7f. Hopefully the likes of Lincoln Bright, Breathtaking Look and Glorious Journey push forward early and make it a real test as that will play into the hands of the selection.

Threat is the danger for me. Failed to make an impact the last twice but still has potential and this is his optimum trip. The favourite is the one they all have to beat.
