Keeneland 3.15 Race 1 Perryville Stakes (6f)
The unbeaten NASHVILLE looks set to take out the opener on Breeders’ Cup Saturday. This Speightstown colt has won his first two starts and should take this step up in class in his stride for Steve Asmussen. He is unexposed and there should be plenty more to come. Even still I don’t really see anything in this field good enough to challenge him so it should be pretty straightforward.
For me it’s who is going to finish second rather than a live danger and that would probably be Relentless Dancer. This colt won well at Pimlico and looks to have the credentials to run a solid race. Bango is the other one who shouldn’t be too far away.
Keeneland 3.45 Race 2 Lafayette Stakes presented by Keeneland Select (7f)
Tough race to call with plenty of these running over an unfavoured 7 furlong trip. SLEEPY EYES TODD is dropping down in trip for the first time in a while and it is a slight unknown. However he has been holding his own in better races and being drawn in 6 looks ideal for him to put his class to good use. The trip may not be his optimum but he may still be too good for them.
Phat Man would be a danger on form but no run in 252 days puts me off and Strike That who has a good record at this trip could be the one to put it up to the selection. Another tricky race.
Keeneland 4.20 Race 3 Qatar Fort Springs Stakes (6f)
I think it’s worth chancing MOTIVATED SELLER here for Chad Brown. This filly has a sexy profile coming into this and while I know she’ll need a lot more to remain unbeaten I do think she has plenty of potential. She showed a good attitude to edge clear at Belmont last month and that was a progressive display. Wicked Whisper was back to winning ways last time and is an obvious danger off the back of that.
Miss T Too won by 5 lengths last time and if she builds on that she will also be involved in the finish you’d imagine. It’s not a race to go too mad in as two or three could improve enough to win it.
Keeneland 5.02 Race 4 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Grade 1) (7f)
Our first Grade 1 of the night and it does look a a nice contest with the classy GAMINE dropping back in trip from the Kentucky Oaks. That was her first defeat and I would fully expect her to bounce back at this trip with the 9 furlongs not quite showing her at her best. Her 4 wins prior to that were comfortable and if in the same form it will take a good one to beat her.
The form from the Distaff runners I think the 2nd on that day Serengeti Empress will be the most likely danger after just missing out at Churchill Downs.
Keeneland 5.39 Race 5 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1) (51/2f)
It doesn’t get much more competitive than this but we’ve had a crack. Leinster is favourite at the time of writing but Imprimis is pushing him close. I’m actually keen on one against them in GOT STORMY. This mare has been in great form lately winning impressively at Kentucky Downs before following up over track and trip last month. She keeps getting underestimated in the market and even given the race I think the hat-trick beckons.
Glass Slippers comes over for Kevin Ryan and she certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Her win at the Curragh was a big effort and she wasn’t disgraced in France last time. This is an afterthought though so I’ll be surprised if she’s at her very best here.
Keeneland 6.18 Race 6 Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Grade 1) (1m)
This race looks as though it will be ran at a frantic pace with Knicks Go likely to ping the gates and just go for it. Complexity likes to go forward and Art Collector won’t be far off the pace. So all 3 at the head of market going at it could setup for one off the pace. MR FREEZE will likely sit off the pace drawn 9 and has shown decent form at this level previously and could spring a surprise at a nice each way price.
Of the principles Complexity is the best in the race but has to get forward from stall 10 and that was the main thing that put me off with all the competition on the front-end. It will be interesting to see how this pans out early.
Keeneland 6.57 Race 7 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Grade 1) (1m11/2f)
I have to be with the market here and RUSHING FALL looks to have a major chance. She beat Mean Mary (second in the betting) last time and I think that form will be confirmed here. Peaceful and Terebellum have each way shouts but the favourite comes here chasing a four-timer and looks capable of better yet. She has the best form on offer and her attitude is to die for. 10/3 looks generous to me at the time of writing!
Mean Mary is obviously entitled to be thereabouts but I can see Cayenne Pepper running a big race at an each way price. She will enjoy the faster surface but the wide draw is what puts me off for win purposes.
Keeneland 7.36 Race 8 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Grade 1) (6f)
Not the best Breeders’ Cup Sprint I have seen but it is setup nicely to be a decent race. C Z ROCKET has won all of his last 5 races and put in his best win yet last time at Santa Anita taking a Grade 2 in the process. The step-up to Grade 1 company looks the logical step and it won’t take much more than his last win to take this.
Yaupon is a fair favourite in my opinion but the unbeaten colt is drawn 10 and likes to go from the front so could use up a fair bit getting there. I think he will get to the front but the selection should save ground and get him late on. COLLUSION ILLUSION was 3rd behind C Z Rocket last time and with a bit more pace on he could site further back and come with a late effort and I have to include him at the 20/1 at the time of writing.
Keeneland 8.15 Race 9 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF (Grade 1) (1m)
This is a fascinating renewal and last year’s winner Uni is back to defend her crown. She has more on her plate here though and I’m willing to take a chance on SISKIN bouncing back. I think this colt has unfinished business and if he bounces back here he will be a danger to all. Things just didn’t pan out for him at Goodwood behind Mohaather (where he finished in front of Kameko) and then it was a big ask over in France behind Persian King. I can see this test suiting him and he looks massively overpriced to me.
Kameko looks to have acclimatised well so he is a big danger and last year’s winner Uni obviously shouldn’t be easily discounted. Raging Bull at a bigger price hasn’t been running badly and while this is tougher I think he’s the sort of horse who could raise his game.
Keeneland 8.54 Race 10 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Fillies & Mares’ Grade 1) (1m1f)
This looks a cracker between the 2018 winner of race MONOMOY GIRL and the Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver. I am favouring the older horse as she has only been beaten once (2nd in 2017) and looks to have been campaigned perfectly to regain her crown. She missed 2019 through injury and has had 3 runs this year to get her ready for this. She won all 3 nicely and I think her freshness will give her the edge and win her 2nd Distaff.
Swiss Skydiver is now doubt a class horse but the Preakness was a tough race and considering she hasn’t had a break since her debut a year ago and running 9 times in the process it may have just left its mark on her.
Keeneland 9.33 Race 11 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (Grade 1) (1m4f)
I’ve got to be with TARNAWA here. She is one of my strongest bets of the night as she looks to make it 4-4 this season. This good looking chestnut put in a career best to win the Prix de l’Opera in France last month and looks at the top of her game. Her potent turn of foot can get any of these off the bridle and if it pans out for her she should win. Magical is obviously a huge danger but she did run a bit flat when only third to Addeybb last time and I think she comes here with a bit to prove. She is obviously the proven performer in the pack so has always got to be respected.
At the bigger prices Lord North is a horse I’ve always liked even though he has shocked me with how much he has progressed. I think he’ll stay and if he does he is no 9/1 shot so he might be worth an each way saver.
Keeneland 10.18 Race 12 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1) (1m2f)
Time for the biggest race of the night the Breeders’ Cup Classic with over $3.7m going to the winner so you can see why it’s such a big race. It is packed with stars with multiple Grade 1 wins and it looks like it will be a cracker. On paper it looks like it is between the top 4 in the market and I think Authentic who beat Tiz The Law in the Kentucky Derby and Maximum Security who was beaten by stablemate and favourite Improbable last time will set it up for the others. Both like to go from the front and we saw how Authentic isn’t as good without a lead of his own in the Preakness defeat.
TIZ THE LAW cruised up to Authentic in the Kentucky Derby but just didn’t go past but I think it will be slightly different this time with the Authentic looking to have company for the lead and it should set it up for the selection to get them turning in. Tiz The Law was unbeaten before that run and will be bang there again.
The main danger is Improbable who beat Maximum Security easily last time and is on a 4-timer. He seems to do better in smaller fields but I expect him to fight out the finish with the selection.
