Ascot 12.45 Itv7 100k Jackpot On Boxing Day Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m51/2f
A decent race to kick-off a good card at Ascot on Friday with a field that has a lot of potential. CASTLE ROBIN impressed at Carlisle before going in again at Cheltenham in a race which looks solid on paper. He is up 7lb for his trainer Charlie Longsdon who has won this race previously. If he is in the same form he will go close.
College Oak from the Snowden yard like the selection won last time out and carries 6lb more as a result but the form of that race is also pretty good and will be the main danger at a nice price.
Ascot 1.20 Sky Bet Money Back As Cash Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 3) 2m51/2f
This looks a great opportunity on paper for EVERGLOW to open his account over hurdles. He showed plenty of ability in a pair of bumpers and while he needed the experience on hurdles debut behind Mcfabulous at Chepstow he quickly improved from that to chase home subsequent graded winner Stargate when last seen in October. He sets a good standard on that run and with further progress a distinct possibility he should take care of these.
Nickelsonthedime has been very consistent since missing by a short head on hurdles debut. He chased home the right horses in Bobhopeornohope and Ask A Honey Bee at Exeter and again ran well at Uttoxeter last time. Looks the main danger to the favourite.
Navan 1.35 BetVictor Make Your Best Bet Novice Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m4f
Not often do we get races from Ireland on ITV on a Friday but this Grade 2 look a very good race. Mullins and Elliot have dominated the last 9 years apart from last year and both have strong hands again. That said the best horse in the race could well be HOLYMACAPONY who was very impressive on debut at Punchestown and has the potential to be a top horse. The time of the race is one of a high level and he could take a lot of beating.
There are plenty of dangers with Fakiera and Fighter Allen looking like the main protagonists if the selection disappoints.
Ascot 1.55 Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) 2m1f
Sir Valentine is a horse I like and he made a really encouraging debut over fences when second to Fusil Raffles at Cheltenham but his jumping let him down at Wetherby last time albeit bumping into an improving sort in Malystic. This doesn’t look any easier sadly so while I think he can run well I’m going to oppose with EDITEUR DU GITE. He ran well when chasing home Sully D’Oc Aa at Ascot and was just ridden too aggressively at Newbury last month. He is lightly raced and can do better so if they judge the fractions better he might prove hard to peg back.
Both Mack The Man and Numitor are fairly prominent in the market but the latter is up 7lb which looks harsh and the former is just too short as favourite given he was thrashed 30 lengths on chase debut. He can improve now handicapping but certainly needs to.
Ascot 2.30 Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Kennel Gate) (GBB Race) 1m71/2f
This looks like a good renewal of this Supreme Trial and it is hard to rule any of them out. MY DROGO edges it as his win last time suggests he has plenty more to come and combine that with his second in a Cheltenham Bumper which has worked out fairly well. If making the natural improvement for the run at Newbury he will be in the mix for sure and is a decent price.
Nicky Henderson has a very good record in this race and No Ordinary Joe could easily step forward from his bumper win but I think Llandinabo Lad will be the main danger after putting up a very good performance at Haydock.
Ascot 3.05 Sky Bet Noel Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) 2m3f
With the front pair in the betting coming here with something to prove I think it’s worth taking a chance on ALLART on chase debut. He looked progressive over hurdles last season and was last seen finishing fifth to Shishkin in the Supreme. He is the type to make a better chaser with the extra yardage looking in his favour and connections must be pleased with him given he is starting out in a Grade 2 here.
Fiddlerontheroof was second to a promising horse in Caribean Boy at Newbury last time and is entitled to go well but the selection might just have improved past him. Pic D’Orhy also has potential as a chaser and was jumping well prior to falling last time so is definitely worth another chance.
Ascot 3.35 Enter ITV7 Tonight Standard Open NH Flat Race (Listed) (GBB Race) (Class 1) 1m71/2f
This bumper has produced plenty of top horses in the past and we could have a few in here. WONDERWALL put up a good time-figure when winning over course and distance last month and should be in the mix again.
Paul Nicholls has two decent chances in Stage Star, fav at the time of writing, and Knappers Hill who both won first-time out impressively. They didn’t do a lot on the clock so it is hard to judge the form so prefer Wonderwall at the bigger price.
